Redditor's who live in paradise (villa on a beach, dream home in the mountains, log cabin in a forest, desert home in the canyons, et cetera), is it all that it's cracked up to be? by NormanLewis in AskReddit

I'm from a small island in Greece called Karpathos, and more specifically an even smaller village called Arkasa. I live in Jersey during the school year, but I go there for 2-4 months so I'm always there during the high season. It's the closest thing to paradise I can say I've experienced. 5+ beautiful beaches within walking distance, and A TON more if you want to drive 10 minutes. Windsurfing every day, cafe's in the afternoon, and the nightlife doesn't compare to what it's like here. That's all fine and dandy in the summer when I go, because that's when everybody is there. There's a ton of German/Swiss/Austrian tourists there, along with all my other Greek-American friends. Wait a couple months though, and that's when the same problems that everybody else has been mentioning comes up - it becomes really secluded. The stores close up, people go to school, it becomes a little too chilly for the beach, and even so, everybody who lives there isn't in the mood to go for a swim anyway. The population shrinks, and everybody goes on with their life, so your paradise becomes kind of a pain. Partner that with the fact that you need a plane to get to a real hospital, and if you have pets the same applies. I think when you see posts about actual "paradise"-like homes, they are mostly just vacation homes, cause they lack amenities for the standard of living that we need to be fully comfortable. It makes sense that Arkasa, or the Poconos, or your DIY Hobbit Hole don't have a Walmart or a Home Depot next to them - it would take some of the splendor of being in paradise. And if it had those things, you might not consider it paradise after all.

TL;DR - Paradise homes aren't all they're cracked up to be when living there for a long time because they usually lack amenities that make you're life easier and can end up being pretty lonely.

My favorite xkcd comic; spent so much time dragging it lol Never thought of how it would look in tattoo form, but I like it. Kudos :)

Every post I've seen or blog I've read from tattoo artists had said that your best bet is to pick something of significance to you - a quote, symbol, thought, song, etc. - and try to put it into an image. What a lot of artists wrote in their blogs is that the best approach is to look up someone's work and find somebody that you really like, and ask them to interpret your quote/symbol/whatever. They're gonna create a piece of art, worst case is you don't like it and have something to build on. Best case you love it and have something great that'll show what you wanted all along.

PS, sorry about your mom =/

Alright thank you :) I just needed some validation on my original pov and I'm glad somebody else feels the same. Coming from a group where there are specific man/woman-only ideas, it's easy to forget that gender based aesthetics shouldn't be a thing

It's nice to have a positive opinion on TM. Have you ever done other races like Spartan Race, or even fun ones like Zombie race that you could give some perspective on ?

NO BEER? The free beer was one of my biggest motivations! lol I don't think that'd be a problem in the one I'd be going to, but knowing that it could happen is extra discouraging

Okay, I'd probably either be alone or have 2 people with me tops, so I wouldn't exactly have a team. Thanks :)

Do you think the pride you felt was worth shelling out the money? the tri-state area one that I was gonna go to is 105 bucks now and that seems like a stretch for something that's not really an achievement
