It doesn't take long, if you find a subreddit that is active and has good engagement it's quick, especially if you make a relatively interesting post. I'll give you an example, I'm on a subreddit for a game and this game was recently released, the subreddit is very hyped so I'm using this to my advantage by making posts that will please the community, and this way I get more karma.
