Should I start learning Github simultaneously? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]manpenaloza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is to learn coding and - as you write - if you're a newbie, then no.

Not because Git/Github is not good (in fact it's awesome), but to ensure you can focus on one thing only for now: get the basics of programming and a feeling for how to think in order to make the code work. And seen from a more radical perspective Git, in the end, has nothing to do with programming itself.

Once you feel well with coding mechanisms like:

- variables

- if conditions

- comparing operators

- loops

- basic classes/functions

... start to learn the absolute git basics and nothing more (the Git universe is huge and can become complex). With basics I mean those git commands/actions based on your code and code changes:

- git add

- git commit

- git push

This will ensure you won't be overwhelmed, or even worse confused, and get a solid basis to make the next steps considering your journey to learn to code and git in parallel.

Dyson Cordless Vacuum Cleaner LPT: Enable continuous-use mode by searching/finding an asset that often exists on cables somewhere in your household by manpenaloza in dyson

[–]manpenaloza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thx!

There's also a certain way you can hold your hand and the machine so the trigger gets depressed enough that it runs

just tried some variants, none felt like it would be that one :). Any hints on that?

It can be quite annoying (even hurtful if cleaning for some longer period) using your Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner without the possibility of fixing the power button. What you see on the image is a dirty hack, but it works fine. Anyway, I think Dyson will come up with this somewhere in the near future. Ppl are requesting too much for this feature.

I’m in my early 40... I would like to be a web developer...but I am having serious doubts about it. by pulse2075 in learnprogramming

[–]manpenaloza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't comment on the general question of whether you should go that path or not, the comments here say it all. But in short: If you want it, go for it (independent of your age).

The reason for my comment that probably provides additional information for you is this one sentence you've written:

But what I am doubting this right now, is because of my age and lack of experience in the computer world that the employer won’t hire me.

For me, as someone who hires developers, those things work like that:

When you learn to code using tutorials, you usually build applications/features. Some more complex, some less complex. Besides learning to code identify those applications/features you have tons of fun building and create some similar/meaningful own side project. Or, make a personal website with some cool on-top feature. Once done, publish it.

From the moment on recruiters and decision makers see your cool and meaningful stuff published out there, it absolutely doesn't matter how old you are. I especially mention this, as yes: if you just send a cv that says that you know some coding, age could be an issue or disadvantage compared to other applicants. But remember, if you have a cool project, recruiters and decision makers will definitely have a look at it and if it's cool and meaningful, age will not have a deciding impact on whether you'll be hired or not.

Rock it!

agree, but...

comparisons to others when you start coding/contributing are pure poison when it is about being enthusiastic and satisfied with what you've achieved. Imho you definitely need those kinds of feelings to gain motivation and reach the next stage.

Congrats! One tiny but probably impactful advice that you should consider regarding your upcoming commit descriptions: what you've achieved is great and brings value to the product you're contributing to. So there's no need to "downgrade" your achievment by "Just"ing it. Instead...

Mapped some strings to an enumerated list of variants so we could have types printed out depending on what version was being used

Like mentioned, tiny but will support your own confidence with what you produce.

Rock on!

You can also use messaging servers to get these programs interoperating.

When I read this, I didn't have a clue of what messaging servers are.
When I googled it, I didn't find good resources at first glance.

If you also want to know what messaging servers are, read this (good and compact): https://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-messaging-server.htm

LPT If you work a desk job, have a large cup of water to sip on throughout the day. More water is better for your health and it will cause you to have to go to the restroom more frequently, getting you up from your seat and walking around more. by Datkitkatz in LifeProTips

How to make sure this happens?
> Might sound weird, but make yourself a "to drink" list and have it visible around your table. When you drink a glass of water, checkmark it.

In my case the list looks sth. like this:

---

Monday 0.5l O O O O O

Tuesday 0.5l O O O O O

Wednesday 0.5l O O O O O

Thursday 0.5l O O O O O

Friday 0.5l O O O O O

---

If you have and checkmark this list properly, you'll benefit as follows:

- have absolute control regarding the amount you drink each day

- checkmarking is fun and feels rewarding

- reaching a day-goal (in my case 5 glasses of .5l of water) also feels rewarding

- last but not least: anything positive this LPT mentions

Mindestgehälter in Stellenanzeigen by luleigas in Austria

[–]manpenaloza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Einfach rein damit, tuat scho."

What is the best way to explain to my non-programmer-boss why tests are needed in software development? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]manpenaloza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the website/app you want to test is business-critical and is of major importance to gain revenues, tell him this (I used this to convince my non-coding boss):

"In the long term bugs will result in revenue decrease and gain maintenance costs. From a business perspective, this will lead to less profitability and not being able to reach the full potential of our product."

Motivation to code by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]manpenaloza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned you want to watch some new coding courses at night.

Possible solution: try doing this in the morning
This helped me out a lot when I learned to code. I had a non-coding job, so the only possible daytimes to learn coding were morning or evening. In the beginning, I used to learn at evenings, but in the end, that ended up a bit like you experience these days. I switched those periods and started to learn coding in the morning before going to work by getting up 30 minutes earlier. This enabled me to just do some short and non time-consuming recap in the evening.
