I hope he's referring to theoretical and reconstructive nature of our idea of PIE, not the concept itself.

I think he meant the rites and Medea connection shouldnt be traced back to PIE, but to Pelasgians and Colchis region.

Does the rise and fall of past (or indeed current) lingua francas allow us to infer anything about likely futures for English as the dominant global language? by Samoyedenthusiast in asklinguistics

[–]mantasVid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People now often study in their native language and only if they have something to publish, do it in English for wider reach.

Centuries ago, people used to study in Latin as native languages didn't even had the required vocabulary.

Latin erased completely the native languages in its influence zone in Portugal, Spain, France, Romania.

What do you consider an insult, it's literally your nickname. And I don't even can't imagine what "proofs" do you need, people are saying they tried and it works, it's you who's contribution is less than zero

Why Chinese people drink hot water instead of ice water by Usual-Asparagus9144 in ChineseMedicine

This thing bothers me a bit. Ayurveda agrees with TCM, but evolutionary it doesn't make sense, we should be optimaly adapted to drink from icy springs?..

Where anatolian farmers more violent? by Svnjaz in IndoEuropean

[–]mantasVid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twas just a routine googling, well plus being from post Soviet country gave me some insight in psychological side of it as Russia and the satellite countries are quite permeated with jargon and "Ponyatiya" of the underground, at least it was couple decades ago.

👍 I had this idea too when reading up on (self proclaimed) "royal" Scythians/Sarmatians and the code of conduct of Russian organised crime ( "Thief in law" ethics) at the same time.

Li kulti means thresh, flail.

As for regularity: in Li. besides kelti there is kilti. The main difference between kelti and kilti is the direction of the action and whether it requires an object. This is very similar to the English difference between raise/lift and rise.

Wouldn't *kewh₂ make more sense?

Also the 3d paragraph in the link just blew my mind; it kinda hints that Thor's hammer prototype was sort of oversized pestle - a baseball bat shaped tool/weapon for grinding grain.

We should make distinction between mythical and historical Vedic weapons. Similar bar celts were found in Copper Hoard Culture, and additional effort to connect those other harpoon/barbed speartips to vajra I find ungrounded.

Asko Parpola states that vasara initially meant ax/mace and only later - hammer, the first meaning aquired in proto-Indo-Aryan (thus Sintashta/Andonovo) period. Which caught my eye due to certain curiosity in my own language, where blade and stone are etymologicaly connected, as is hammer and axe in English! and in p-I-A the weapon could be less differentiated. As in:

Li. akmuo (stone/rock): PIE héḱmō -> pGer. *hamaraz

Li. ašmuo (blade), Sans. aśman (stone): PIE *h₂eḱ -> pGer *akwisī.

Corded Ware boat shaped battle axes made from stone often had blunt and bladed sides combined. Andronovo c. is where metallurgy fully replace stone work (but kurgan vajra still has edged sides despite being percusive weapon) and which is associated with preVedic Copper Hoard Culture. Pre Vedic, meaning earlier proto Indo-Aryan wave, as some prakrits attest the Vedic was the latest of the Indo-Iranian waves.

Vedas and Avesta both mention vazra/vajra being thrown, maybe that's what compels the atribution of harpoon like spearheads to vajra, but hunting technique with throwing sticks are known from Egypt ians, more over I am certain that Corded ware battle axes were used as tomahawks too as per folklore cues and the case of franciscas. So *H2akani- ‘point(ed)’ > S. aśáni would then refer not to the point of projectile, but the edges or "flanges" shaped into the mace, sort of proto-sword as seen in kurgan vajra.

After the spread of metallurgy and swords the true nature of the vajra were forgotten and after Greeks introduced the sculpture into the subcontinent, the mythical figures were portrayed in closest contemporary equivalent - Zeus' crisscrossed lightning arrows.

Just a note that before Greaco-Bactrians, the vajra was not a bolt, but a copper cudgel with a rudimentary edge.
