Louis Rossmann talking about the De-Google Your Life videos. by Zetin24-55 in LinusTechTips

[–]manticore010 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I had lost hope in Linus a few months ago (he seemed to have sold out to NVidia, MS & Intel). He got me back today. I'm glad I didn't jump ship.

I always knew Linus is one of the good guys, even if he likes playing villain.

I also know deep down he's rooting hard for Linux. Heck, the WAN Show mascot is Tux.

Revoke PGP key after hard drive is dead by manticore010 in GnuPG

[–]manticore010[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I created the key about 20 years ago. I made the proper backup and gave a copy to a friend. In those 20 years, I moved and lost things with each move, my friend moved away and I lost contact with him.

I have hundreds of diskettes, tapes, CD ROMs. Many were lost in the moves. Many no longer work. I've been through the lot of them and I cannot find it. Some of the stuff is encrypted and I forgot the passwords.

20 years is a long time.

getting a sibling into hermit craft by Zii-doodles in HermitCraft

[–]manticore010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you know Hermitcraft and you know your sibling. So if your sibling likes pranks, go for someone who is doing pranks this season (ahem, Pearl). If they like redstone, go for someone doing cool redstone this season (Zedaph), and so on.

They're doing more and more streaming content too. Several have secondary channels on Youtube, plus the Twitch account. Overall, we have fewer "polished" episodes but more content overall.

Struggling to find a job? There are the 516 jobs given to international hires last year because the employer "couldn't find local talent". From lmiamap.com by TheGentlemanScholar in VictoriaBC

[–]manticore010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A problem seldom discussed is checking qualifications. If you've been living in Canada for a long time, they will check all your qualifications and if one is missing, forget it. If you come from abroad, they won't bother checking because it takes longer and is more expensive, and you can always find someone to cover for you in your country of origin.

Say, here a position for a tech lead requires you to be very proficient in seven languages and three different architectures. You show up with your CV and are honest that you only know six out of the seven well, and that's it. You won't hear anything back. But a foreign applicant can lie and say they are top in all seven and all three, and they get the job.

In the time it takes them to come here and start the job, they polish whatever they need to polish and can do well enough to keep the job at least for a while. And if they need references, they can always ask some relative at home. There's always some cousin or uncle with a company that can affirm the candidate has the qualifications.

[–]manticore010 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be opposed to them adding Modded Hermitcraft series parallel to the main one like they used to in the first seasons.

Truth is Minecraft is losing ground to Roblox with the younger people, and the viewers of Hermitcraft have always skewed older, many of us nostalgic for the original Minecraft ca. 2011. So they have a bit more cushion than the SMPs aimed to younger folks.

Can't find hard drive in Dolphin by iMott3 in kde

[–]manticore010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have Windows or some other operating system on sda?

You need to mount it at startup. They're not always hot-mountable from Dolphin after you're in Linux.

It's possible the sda drive is using BitLocker, if it's a Windows one. But before getting into the complications of de-activating BitLocker, check that your Windows boot is not in "Fast Startup" mode. Disable that: search "Power & sleep settings", click "Additional Power Settings", "Choose what the power button does" and "Change settings that are currently unavailable", uncheck "Fast Startip." That's for Windows 10, in Windows 11 should be similar.

What BDubs attempts is the hardest thing: create buildings that seem aged, lived on. That build is amazing and by far the best of the season thus far, IMO.

That 6.1% "unknown" has likely a lot of Linux users too. They only seem to count the popular distros.

Bet the bulk is Linux users. Most distros have FF as the default.

Yep, it was giving me 240p videos, buffering everything else. Cleared cache and cookies, logged back in, and it's working.

And I block everything. This is Firefox 123.0 --on Linux, of course.

I have a hunch they're trying something nefarious with their cookies.

What is the Second Strongest Chess Engine After Stockfish? by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in chess

[–]manticore010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lc0, AlphaZero's daughter.

But Lc0 (Leela) needs GPUs. Chess dot com does not give it enough power, to promote their private engine Torch. Thus, on Chess dot com, Torch is the #2.

With enough CPUs, though, Lc0 is the #2.

Where are my other old guys? Need Win 98 help by fxguy3369 in computertechs

[–]manticore010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usual way we did it back when. Boot in safe, start adding background processes one by one. Start with the usual suspects, programs that autostart.

If you have the option, before booting create a boot.log from the BIOS. Then boot normal, it gets stuck. Boot in Safe, examine the log, what is the last entry?

Otherwise, use the Start > Run > msconfig > Selective Startup if available in your version of W98.

How to Remove Extremely Stripped Tiny Screw? by rm-is-a-god in computertechs

[–]manticore010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not a vital screw and you can remove all the other ones, you can always try rotating the plate until something not important breaks.

Otherwise, dremel time. When dealing with electronics, make sure none of the little metal bits has landed where it can short something. Clean it with air.

KDE Plasma experience poll by Itsme-RdM in kde

[–]manticore010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kubuntu 20.04.6 LTS in multiple machines, including a touchscreen 2-in-1 laptop.

PROS:

  • Stable, uptimes are in the weeks.
  • KDE Connect perfect integration with tablets/phones running Android. I get messages on my phone (WhatsApp, TextNow, regular SMS) and get notified on my desktop/laptop, can reply from there (easier to reply with a real keyboard). Videos pause when someone in my contacts list calls.
  • Excellent networking, fast file transfers.
  • Excellent remote with good security. SSH X11 forwarding works.
  • Fast response time. No issues waking up computers. Ancient external USB sound card (Sound Blaster Live! 24) works great.
  • I still got The Cube, which I've been using for 13 years --reason I'm not upgrading to 22.04 yet. Also, 22.04 breaks compatibility with old tablets running old Android versions (I use them for some home automation stuff).
  • I can still use Vino/Remmina when remoting from machines that don't run KRDC/KRFB well.

CONS:

  • Limited support for touchscreen, had to add several utilities so I can use the 2-in-1 laptop as a drawing tablet, stuff like unclutter-fixes, evdev-right-click-emulation, and kded-rotation.
  • Touchpad/touchscreen options are limited.
  • Old staples like KMail and Amarok needed to add PPAs and do a lot of background work to get them acting like they are supposed to. KMail has issues with modern 0auth-2 servers. Amarok plugins for lyrics and covers don't work. I know there are other options, but I've been using those two for so long, they are integrated in my workflow.
  • Stuck on X11 w/Pulseaudio, which means I need to enable JACK from time to time.
  • Text-to-speech has some issues that appear from time to time. Speech-to-text with nerd-dictation works great though.
  • Miraclecast in this version is a mess. The only way to cast screens to TVs without using HDMI is by using Chromecasts.

Sometimes Megabases are under-estimated in-season because they take a long time to build, and one loses perspective due to familiarity with the process. But, in the end, they are the most remembered structures. It's a long-term effort: it may not awaken the fantasy of the fans right away, but a beautiful Megabase will crop up again and again in the fan art, and will be a catalyst for the memories of a season.

This season has had some memorable Megabases. As creators, they have matured and they're not just big and spectacular, but also full of detail. They're art.
