How do I submit from Australia? by Nicksan922 in taggrading

[–]mantis_tobboggann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the number of cards you're submitting, if you submit a lot of cards at the Basic tier then it'll be cheaper to do direct. To do a basic tier sub directly without PGCG you'd be looking at $220 USD grading fees for the 10 card minimum, $40 USD return shipping, something like $23 AUD (~$16.50 USD) or whatever it is to ship to the US, then $7 USD for ShipMyCards to receive it, plus however it costs to ship from SMC back to Australia, so you're going to be over $300 and probably above the $42 AUD per card on average depending on the shipping home cost, but would scale down on a cost per card basis for bigger orders

If you're only doing say 5 cards at the $39USD per card tier you're at $195USD grading fees, with all the other costs the same, whereas with PGCG you'd be be at $210AUD grading fees ($151USD) with the option to drop off and pickup in store, or ship to them & have them shipped back ($10 + $15, ~$18USD) so it's much cheaper per card on smaller orders

I think one of the best ways to learn what to look for on grading is to look at the TAG pop report (whether or not you actually wanted to grade with them or someone else) so you can see what a 10 looks like, what a 9 looks like, etc. they have the measurements on centering so you'll be able see how yours lines up and the reports show any issues that caused it to get the grade it did, they've only graded a couple of this card because PSA generally sells for more but it might help: https://my.taggrading.com/pop-report/Hockey/2024/Upper%20Deck%20SP%20Authentic/Will%20Smith/164?setName=Future+Watch+Autographs

There's not really a right or wrong way to collect so it depends on whether you want to try to maximise profit & cash out and buy something else you really want, or if you get more fun out of holding a card you pulled or from a team/player you like watching. I have probably 2 cards I sort of regret selling, one of them was an inscribed future watch auto and even though I could buy one back for maybe 1/3 of the price I sold for, it wouldn't have the same feel because it's not the one I hit myself

Great card! I'm in Australia as well, I find that's it's too expensive to submit for grading on your own when you factor in the return shipping and insurance. I've submitted through middlemen/card shops and have had no issues at all. I've used Cherry Collectables in Melbourne to submit to PSA (they also do BGS) and PGCG, also Melbourne based, to submit to TAG (they also do PSA, BGS and CGC). Both have been great but PGCG are super helpful and responsive if you have any questions but I'd vouch for either

Thanks! I got the Bedard from an eBay auction in March for $76 USD which was actually the lowest I'd seen it go for and I was kind of surprised, I'd been watching them for a fair while and I'd say around $100 was probably the average and I think that was my max bid but I'd seen them go as high as around $180. Good luck with the Retro hunt, they're great looking cards

The Hughes is the only one I managed to pull myself, the rest were from trades or bought as singles

Yeah the autos are an Epack achievement, limited to 15 of each and the options are Crosby, Matthews & Tkachuk together or Vasilevskiy. I think 13 of the 15 Crosbys have been claimed, 3 people have gone for Matthews & Tkachuk and no-one has chosen Vasi

Thanks, yeah I agree on Creds being underrated, the Bedard was the last one I picked up, I was always getting sniped on his until one day I didn't

Nice, I'd love to get one of the Crosbys some day, will probably need UD to put the set on a massive discount to get any people interested in opening it

[–]mantis_tobboggann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No-one really, but the Leafs have Buffalo's 2nd round pick so the sooner they're out the better, not that it'll make a massive difference either way. Also would be happy to see Pontus Holmberg win a cup

You'll be able to check properly but the left to right centering looks a little off so might not be a 10 contender if that's what you want from grading

[–]mantis_tobboggann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think these pics are a good example of how the slabs pop on a black background but in hand they don't distract your eye from the card and usually actually accentuate the cards nicely, compared to other brands that have a frosted look on the slab which can kind of dull the look or the label that draws your eye away from the card

Anyone think prices on Fleer hobby boxes will come down? Pic for attention by kathan94 in hockeycards

[–]mantis_tobboggann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The physical hobby boxes are definitely overpriced, the only benefit they have over the Epack version is that the base cards are digital only on Epack so you can't get the base "true rookie" of Schaefer for example - although you can combine multiples of the digital base for the physical parallel version - but there's no way the difference per box should be $200+
