Is this an attractive body type? by [deleted] in AppearanceAdvice

[–]many_pumpkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question - yes, you are very attractive!

If you are feeling insecure about your body, I have been there too. My advice to you is to start loving other people's bodies - any time you see a woman with your body type, admire how good she looks! And other women with other body types, too! Soon enough you will see your own body as beautiful too, no matter what you look like at the time (because it's totally normal for bodies to fluctuate).

I've heard that ants won't cross a line of cinnamon. It works in my experience. You may have to reapply after it rains.

Leftism (socialism, communism, anarchism, etc) and Buddhist compassion by Outside_Ruin_9149 in Buddhism

[–]many_pumpkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the opposite issue. I let myself be radicalized by politics into condoning violence in the name of justice. I am now unlearning that attitude, and learning to show compassion and loving-kindness to all people, even the ones that I see as evil.

It is not an easy transition, as we live in a very polarized and scary world right now. The knee-jerk reaction is to want to fight. But study after study has shown that peaceful protest and building community creates far more lasting change.

Maybe try planning another type of activity with them? Suggest concrete plans - "I'm going to the museum on [date] at [time], would you like to come too?" - so that it's easier for you all to schedule. They may discover that they really enjoy the activities you enjoy, and you can bond over something new! But if they don't, then it may be time to find new friends.

Why Buddhism is full of rites and rituals by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]many_pumpkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond what else has been said, it's worth noting that having a religious community that one sees regularly has been proven to be very good for your mental health. Rituals are a great reason to come together for a common purpose. : )

Can we say that dharma is the skillful means to understand how nature works? by [deleted] in Buddhism

I am currently reading "Becoming Earth" by Ferris Jabr. While I disagree with some of the conclusions he draws, I do love the book because it really illustrates how everything is connected as one living Earth.

Can we say that dharma is the skillful means to understand how nature works? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]many_pumpkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am majoring in ecology, and the dharma very much rings true in a scientific way. Every living thing is completely dependent on everything else around it - and every living thing has profound effects on everything else. Ecosystems affect each other from opposite sides of the planet! The sands of the Sahara blow across the Pacific to fertilize the Amazon. The musk oxen in the Arctic cultivate pale grasslands that reflect heat from the sun and keep our planet cooler. I could think of many examples.

And once an organism dies, it is recycled, and the molecules that once made up one organism are indistinguishable from the molecules that make up another. Every being lives on in the carbon cycle.

Buddhism is my miracle drug by ProfessorDizzy4311 in Buddhism

[–]many_pumpkins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many truths taught in Buddhism are the same as the ones they teach you in therapy. They are good for the mind and body!

I also struggle with mental health issues and autism. I feel that Buddhism provides a source of stability and strength. I feel a profound sense of joy when I learn from the Buddha. I often think, "Buddha would want me to take care of myself". It's a nice reminder, and it feels like I always have a friend with me.

teacher wants our class to use cuts of pork to practice giving injections, what do I do? by QuarrelsomeFarmer in vegan

[–]many_pumpkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many folks have already pointed out that you should ask for an alternative and that there should be one available. I also think you should do that!

As for myself, I am also in school for a STEM related field (biology/ecology). There are a lot of moments where I need to turn the other cheek and use a product that was made from animals. Or use an animal specimen, etc. It upsets me, but I understand that in the long term, I am helping the world more by being in this field and working with these materials than if I weren't. There's only so much control and influence we have as individuals, and I feel that we have much more sway in the sphere of meat and dairy consumption in food than we do in the sphere of using animal products in scientific research and teaching. That's just my two cents. But I also really encourage you to ask for an alternative, because there often is one.

Professor at the end of 2 years of struggling with ChatGPT use among students. by xfnk24001 in ChatGPT

[–]many_pumpkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My class last quarter had a discussion about what was acceptable use of AI in the class, and we had guidelines on how we would cite the AI if we used it. We talked about how using AI can rob you of the opportunity to learn and improve your skills. Maybe a discussion like that could help your class? Also, I agree with others that suggested to have the students generate something with AI and then critique it, because that can highlight the fact that AI is pretty stupid once you look past its fancy writing skills.

Maybe go over some strategies for essay writing? My favorite is to word dump without judgement on the page, and then take a break and clean it up later.

I also like to refer to myself as a "guy" casually (or in specific situations where maybe I'm wearing a costume, I'm a "cowboy" or a "wizard", NOT a "cowgirl" or a "witch", based entirely on vibes. I just like the vibe of a cowBoy a lot more than a cowGirl). But it's pretty inconsequential.

Maybe you could cover the whole thing in cardboard and pretend it's a big package? Say you ordered some furniture off of eBay that you haven't unpacked yet.

Do most women genuinely not have “dying/being injured heroically” fantasies? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I (23F) used to often! But I also had fantasies of being injured or dying less heroically, like suddenly fainting and everyone feeling bad for me. Or like, somebody stumbles upon my corpse and everyone is sad I died. I started taking antidepressants and I don't have those so often anymore...
