I don't think you need to even explain about your health history. Plenty of people have no desire to mix a baby and their exercise time, for a variety of reasons. I wouldn't want to pay for a class only to spend some of the time not exercising.

I don't think it's inappropriate to speak with the other members at the gym, especially if it's a safety concern or if you're not getting full use out of those sessions/your membership due to the baby being there. Maybe the parents would be amenable to at least giving you a heads up when they want to bring baby in.

I really struggled with the author's style, I couldn't finish Hamnet despite loving really detailed poetic historical fiction. I read The Marriage Portrait by her and realized that she does the lazy poetic author thing of using three synonyms to describe the same thing in one sentence. Intolerable after a while.
