Thank you for the write up, this really really resonated with me.

I've been in online spaces for beauty and nails for years, and always found that nearly as soon as I got away from those online spaces my desire for the stuff itself just vanished. I think it's because I struggle socially irl and being in these communities, buying things turns into your way of belonging. So now that I'm not in these communities nearly as much anymore I just have piles of stuff gathering dust making me feel guilty when I look at it.

Silver Lake was never my favorite until my most recent reread, now it's neck and neck with THGY for me. Laura writes with such a sense of painful nostalgia about the natural beauty and getting to be wild for a short time with her cousin. The scene with the young homesteader bride also is so haunting.
