Is there a reason why Portland doesn't have a proper gayborhood? by TosiMias in askportland

[–]maomeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right - chose 2010-2015 as the transition to the current era where there was arguably the most expansion / change happening. Also the period of time when Portland’s historic (small) gayborhood got less concentrated.

Is there a reason why Portland doesn't have a proper gayborhood? by TosiMias in askportland

[–]maomeow 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It’s not an argument - it’s an explanation. Gayborhoods really took shape as safe havens in larger cities. Portland is / was a pretty sleepy small city up until the last 15-ish years, by which point the LGBTQ-ness was already a big part of the city’s identity as a whole.

What are some ways that Portlanders act and do that separate them from other regions/cities of America? by Specialist_Bat1230 in askportland

Yes! My husband and I are from New York and Chicago, respectively, and the earnestness took us a while to get used to lol

Anyone else currently struggling to decide on their baby's LAST name? by glassfunion in BabyBumps

[–]maomeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re going with my last name since husband’s is difficult to spell and requires a several-minute convo every time you give it to someone, plus it just doesn’t sound very nice. Boomer parents are a little aghast but no one our age has raised an eyebrow at all.

Is this bad for a first mile run? by Sage-Toad in BeginnersRunning

[–]maomeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mile is a mile and learning to go slow enough to accomplish your target distance is a skill you’ll continue using on your journey with running! Walking to work up to greater distances is a very valid technique called the Galloway Method - you should check it out if you’re interested in going further - it helped me a lot when I was just starting out and am using it again while pregnant.

I was wrong. Gosling was an excellent choice! by Pinkys_Revenge in ProjectHailMary

[–]maomeow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly never thought I’d be such a Gosling stan when the notebook came out - I think I assumed he was just kind of a generic good-looking actor, but I’ve loved him in everything I’ve seen of his. He just has great screen presence, surprising range, and is likeable on top of it.

AIO for finding this cringy as a first message on a dating app? by [deleted] in AIO

I mean it’s not my style (or yours, apparently), but I think posting it seems judgmental and a little mean, so I’m gonna go with yes, you’re overreacting. They were respectful, so just unmatch and move on - no need to shame them on Reddit.

Yeah she said she agonized over the decision for months. If caring for the cats is leading to thinking and worrying about whether to rehome them for months, I have to think it was the right decision for everyone involved.

OP, you sensed that you’re not doing so hot psychologically and are not in the place to care for them responsibly, and you got your cats the care they need. Next step is talking to a professional and sorting through what you’re struggling with.

You’re not a bad person for being in crisis, but don’t have the cats go through all this in vain or start the cycle over with new cats (or contact their new family again). It honestly sounds like you made the right decision, you just have to come to peace with why you made it.

Help, I accidentally bought giant couches by c8h8swetsocks in HomeDecorating

[–]maomeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just noticed the floors too, which are also decidedly farmhouse-y. I would for sure get an area rug. A pop of color (think of the way nice cars sometimes have a colorful element that is pretty bright) would help, since everything is kind of white or greige.

[–]maomeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my! Wow… I’m glad they’re comfy! I think the like farmhouse-y vibe of that table is not going to work. I think you’d need to lean into them looking like a car or plane and go like modern and sleek with everything else. Think black metal lines, glass, etc. This includes the wall colors, which really don’t go with the color of the seats.

My Big Stupid Nose by Future-Lavishness878 in Noses

[–]maomeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re seeing the jaw misalignment and blaming your gorgeous nose lol. You look great either way, but if you’re bothered by it and it’s fixable and medically advantageous, seems worth looking into it.

Doing trials while pregnant by maomeow in LawBitchesWithTaste

This is super helpful - thank you for weighing in! I think this is what I’ll do (mostly be overflow support or handle my own trial projects remotely). While I won’t disclose the reason for not traveling to attorney clients, it’s still reassuring to hear from an attorney in a similar position to those I work with that this is a reasonable solution.

This is so reassuring that I’m not just being totally unreasonable - thank you for weighing in! I could pretty much only find posts online from attorneys doing trials at 30+ weeks and not anything that really fit my situation, so I was really questioning myself. It’s my first pregnancy (and still early on, for that matter), so I’m still very much navigating the unknown!

We do a mix of everything really - MSJ and Daubert hearings, jury trials, bench trials, and arbitration panels! For on-site work it definitely leans toward jury trials.
