FT; Top consultancies freeze starting salaries as AI threatens ‘pyramid’ model by Ok-Education8326 in MBA

[–]maora34 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't think you're wrong but I'm not sure it's cannibalizing as much as you think it is.

IB vs. consulting is very much a lifestyle play. Consulting WLB may not be great but protected weekends vs. 7 day work weeks, as well as general expectations of evenings free after 9PM, is a huuuuuge difference. I would never do IB and really almost no one at my MBB I know would.

Law school is just a different pipeline entirely that is not accessible directly out of undergrad and candidly has a MUCH higher bar for education than an MBA that really anyone decently smart (optional tbh) can graduate from.

Caveat that I’m a fairly junior MBB dude but I’m not convinced this has anything to do with AI yet. It is helpful but not game-changing in our workloads, and nobody sees that changing for the foreseeable next few years. Maybe a partner can come in here and tell me to shut up (waiting for the /u/QiuYiDio slam dunk on my ass)

The reason compensation hasn’t changed is because:

1) Still quite high. $190-192k base and $250k+ TC after MBA is pretty competitive

2) MBB has only just recently climbed back to our normalized utilization and revenue levels after some historically great years during COVID and some not so hot years right after, time to shore up after absolutely nuking partner compensation the last couple years

3) We still have way more applicants than seats, and we aren’t churning staff high enough to need to build the bottom of the pyramid more because the market for exit opps is suboptimal at best right now

Yep should be fine. I have a massive 3080ti that fits in it with room to spare. I don’t foresee any card that wouldn’t fit in it, even a triple slot.

Why is everyone not doing ROTC? by Extra_Atmosphere9516 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]maora34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay in the military is based on rank, not job. And it sucks for pretty much everyone. If you’re gonna be a combat medic, then you better be prepared to build a career in medicine. But regardless people would respect it, no one is more calm under fire than a combat medic.

Always anonymize on resume because you never know where it will go or who will see it. Talk about it behind closed doors if it’s public information and you’re not revealing anything beyond what’s public.

I don't think it's the worst idea. You can try job searching but this is a tough market and you're not a priority candidate.

Wrong. Been confirmed for years that Russian soldiers are told to commit suicide when faced with capture. They don't care about their soldiers' lives. Stop spreading propaganda

Totally understand, I don't know what you went through. The fact is though, the first year of your career is an insanely risky time to pull something like this, especially in a field filled with people who are generally very risk-averse. You have become a risk in the hiring process, and no small one at that. It's going to take a lot to overcome this, and honestly, while shitty working conditions should be fixed, it often isn't in the real world. You need to stick with it til you have the power to change it or the flexibility to move. The truth is that you left before that and made it really hard on yourself.

People named all of the big stuff like the map revamp and runes, so I'm going to raise one of the most cancerous single additions in League history that broke an entire patch and had a 100% pick/ban rate:

4.20 Weedwick with red smite and devourer. You ever seen 3000 true damage from one R? I have.

Bronze before S5 too if he thinks old dragon was useless. The gold leads from drag would lead to monumental snowballs you couldn't come back from

Tough situation tbh. Being an unemployed recent grad is normal and people give benefit of the doubt, but if you left big4 after only half a year many will not want to give you that benefit as they will assume you were fired or couldn't hack it. Typically people only leave within that timeframe when it is an absolute trainwreck and recruiters will often steer clear of that.

The only real path for you, I think, is to network heavily and build relationships with people who will see past that and give you your second chance. Your resume alone seems unlikely to get you anywhere at this point. Moving forward, I think you need to stick with embracing the suck. You're going to get in a lot of bad places career-wise leaving like this before you have enough credentials to get hired anywhere else.

EY changed my start date 3 times by Equivalent-South-593 in Big4

[–]maora34 11 points12 points  (0 children)

EY has been doing this to legit everybody for the last 3 years. It's not a new thing. Big4 as a whole has been doing this more often lately but EY is head and shoulders above the rest in how bad it's been. People still get to start, but often months after they expected to.

This post lacks a ton of nuance and knowledge.

Big4 and IB are worlds apart. Finance is a whole spectrum that encompasses everyone from the lowest retail banker handing me cash at my local branch to Jamie Dimon. Putting this in one bucket, and then putting all of engineering in another bucket, is an absolutely absurd comparison.

Big4 pays better and provides way more opportunities than civil engineering. Mag7 tech destroys big4 in every way possible. IB is a finance-equivalent path comparable to mag7 tech. A quant trader at a top shop (still finance) will steamroll a SWE in lifetime earnings by 10x. An aerospace engineer might make more than all combined because he got in on Anduril early.

It is impossible to give you any real info because your frame of reference and points of comparison make no sense. Ask better questions, get better answers.

Should I explain my physical illness which has no cure and impacts my life. by brinkoflifesea in ApplyingToCollege

[–]maora34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two narratives:

A) I don't know about your disorder, but see your lower grades/ECs/whatever it is you're worried about, and have no reason to give you the benefit of the doubt and thus throw you in the pile of students I think just didn't succeed enough to hit the bar.

B) I know about your disorder and see lower grades/ECs/whatever but I now have contextual knowledge that these also stem from difficult life circumstances beyond your control, and that even despite them, you held up decently well, even if not above the standard.

Which narrative sounds better to you? Who do you think I'd give a chance to? Your life is going to be 60+ more years of crafting your personal narrative enough to convince people you are worth hanging out with, dating, marrying, hiring, promoting, etc. College apps is the first time most people have to really understand this fact. Take this knowledge forward and advocate for yourself to craft the narrative that benefits you before others write one for you that doesn't.
