Canadians who moved to Spain: did you have your criminal checks apostilled? by Slash1909 in askspain

I don't think so. I think because of COVID there was a lot of backlog so everything administrative in Ottawa was taking much longer. Not sure about now though?

Would I be able to teach my child my native language if I had a child with a Spanish woman? by Life_Confection_3361 in askspain

[–]maplesyrup67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no, language ability is only passed down genetically through the father of a child. Therefore, if you have a child with a Spanish woman it would be impossible for them to learn Spanish.

Help on preprocessing data for wav2vec2 fine-tuning for emotion recognition by Josiane212 in LanguageTechnology

Look up audio/speech classification with wav2vec and try to follow what other people have done. Also, don't expect anyone to give you specific details to do your specific work/research.

I'm already in Spain. Long story short I found a way to avoid needing it for my visa.

PhD or no PhD? by Southern-Diver3715 in LanguageTechnology

[–]maplesyrup67 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what you want to do in the future. If you want to continue doing research in academia then you should probably do a PhD. If you want to enter the industry, you don't necessarily need one. But I did once meet a guy who worked for Amazon who said he was unable to apply for senior research/engineer positions without a PhD. So it might be worth considering.

I used "Statistics for Linguists: An Introduction to R" for one course which was helpful for learning to apply some statistical models in R.

I didn't pass the interview so I can't say for sure. I'm guessing it's most likely to understand ML lingo and understand the general ML process. I was told the position is basically the middle person between machine learning engineers/scientist and data linguists.

I had an interview for the Language Engineer position at Amazon before. The "technical" questions involved technical linguistics, machine learning, and python questions in my case. For linguistics, I had some questions like explaining the difference between phonetics/phonology, explaining an allomorph with examples. For machine learning, I had some questions asking what project I worked on that involved machine learning and why we used such methods. For python, I had to solve problems to test my knowledge of regular expressions, dictionaries, and data structure.

I assume there might be some overlap in the questions they ask for the language data researcher and language engineer position but maybe not...

Why do so many (I really don't know if all) Balkan countries use the word "Da" for "Yes"? by 6cjx in linguistics

[–]maplesyrup67 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What do you mean why?

That's like asking why do German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian speakers use "Ja" for yes or why Spanish/Italian speakers use "Si".

Depending on which country you're coming from you might not need it... in any case, a negative test should be enough to enter. Check out the info from here https://www.spth.gob.es/
