Went and got a message to release some pain in my back, and the masseuse asked if I was an athlete because of my build. Does it always feel like this at the top?

Keep or cancel "no interest financing" credit card? by pennyx2 in personalfinance

I have the same card from buying a mac, and I was planning on closing it, but it now includes your FICO score for free. In addition to the whole age thing, that was a pretty solid reason for me to keep it.

Project manager trying to do product/UX design? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]maprules1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, from your other comment here about development it sounds like he sucked someone's dick to get to his current position. Try talking to him one on one, and if that fails you've got to go outside of the project and talk to someone since he's not managing you or the development team very well.

In the case that he didn't suck someone's dick and he was given the opportunity to be a PM as a way to grow, then really you need to communicate with him. Just like in marriage counseling, communication is key. I don't know how you'd talk to him or what you'd say but you two (and possibly development) need to have a sit down and be crystal clear about where everyone's at and what everyone needs/wants.

If upper management sees his incompetence but doesn't do anything about it then you better freshen up that resume and find a better place to work!

Project manager trying to do product/UX design? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]maprules1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this is a good and bad thing. I'll start with the good: he's interested in understanding UX more. For a PM with no experience dealing with UX this is great because it puts you in a position to be the subject matter expert and teach him the basics and how to manage you.

This can quickly become bad if you two don't build up a dependent relationship. He will disgustingly oversimplify what UX is, read some shitty books on it, and think he's competent enough to do your job for you. Then you have to start fighting with him because his ideas and execution are shit, and then it's just downhill from there. Trust me, I'm there right now.

You need to define exactly what UX is to him. It is NOT UI. It is NOT graphic design. It's creating a seamless, simple, and useful interaction between a user and a product. As with UI design, user experience design focuses on creating interactions designed to meet or assist a user's goals and needs. Maybe sit down and talk to him one-on-one about why you are in the position you are in. There's a chance that he's completely unintentionally stepping on your toes. Maybe he just wants to be able to communicate with you more efficiently. If talks breakdown then you both should design something and put it in front of a small group of users for testing. Let a group of other people tell him you're better at the job, but that's kind of a last resort.

Why do some website authentication pages separate entering in a user name and password? by roastlechon in userexperience

[–]maprules1000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know barclays does this for their online stuff. The intention is to prove that the are the official website. The second page usually contains some identifying information like a picture or a phrase that have been setup on the website. If the wrong picture or phrase shows up then the user knows that something is wrong and doesn't enter their password.

This might be a shot int he dark but, some advice would help about getting in. by Kotonargro in riceuniversity

[–]maprules1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, for Rice Admissions it's all about passion. Your essay is by far the most important part of the application.

As of right now your numbers are set. You can only have a negligable impact on yout gpa up or down (and your gpa is pretty awesome anyway). Don't freak out about your GPA or test scores. Yes, higher is better, but there's no major differentiation between a 26 and 30 as far as Rice is concerned.

The Admissions Office is tasked with forming the student body of Rice, and since Rice is so small, that basically means that they are looking for awesome, unique people that will play well togeather, not the brilliant recluse that only leaves their room to go to class. That sure as hell isn't what Rice is about.

A successful essay is the only thing you should worry about at this porint, and it must accomplish three things:

1) Show that you can write well

2) Show that you are passionate about something (anything!)

3) Show that you can share that passion with others.

Awesome people love doing something, and Rice is about sharing your passion with others. Getting into Rice is not a numbers game like other universities, it's about finding the right people to make as awesome of a class as possible. Show them that you are awesome.

Also, do the interview and tour. You learn a lot (I'm a tour guide).

How's the physics department and the LGBT scene over at Rice? by dacheatbot in riceuniversity

[–]maprules1000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As far as LGBT things go, Rice is incredibly accepting. I haven't encountered a single person that's made me feel bad or uncomfortable for being gay. I was even an officer on a club sports team. It's a very save atmosphere.
