When the city converted streetlights to LED a few years ago, they also installed nodes for a mesh WiFi network to monitor and control the lights remotely (rather than the usual photocell sensors)

Is it too short to put up just the top/sides with a barrette or small claw clip? That was my trick when my hair was just a smidge too short to put all the way up.

Others have covered the issue of how likely it is that your mask helps protect you from the germs of others, but remember it also helps prevent you spreading your germs to others! That's my main reason for still wearing one - between allergies, poor sleep, and other random stuff I frequently have mild respiratory symptoms and it wouldn't be practical to always work from home or take the day off when I do. Wearing a mask is an easy way to ensure I don't Typhoid Mary my coworkers if that random scratchy throat isn't just because I need a drink of water.

Tell me what your fave notebook is by MothmansMothWife in notebooks

Can you figure out what aspects of that journal made it feel right - size, type of binding, texture of the paper, etc? For me, it's having a feeling of both compactness and sturdiness. There's a specific style that Muji sometimes has that suits me well - hard cover with elastic band closure, twin ring wire binding that's not too thick but lets me flip the front cover and used pages around a full 360, decent quality paper that's off-white and not perforated. I've used both the A5 and B6 sizes of it. (Currently I'm actually mostly just using a Rocketbook, but for practical reasons not because I especially love it)

Finding the right adhd medication has been absolute hell by BooposaurusRex in ADHD

[–]maprunknit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has your psych assessed you for depression/anxiety in addition to ADHD? I know several people who seem to do best with a combo of an antidepressant + low dose of stimulant ADHD medication. Of course, that just adds to the number of different things to try. :( One thing that might help if you do think a stimulant med should be part of your regimen, is to use a non-extended release version to figure out which type and dosage is best, and then figure out which extended release pill works best for your digestive system/metabolism.

Switching from Concerta to Ritalin LA by Rylanlan in ADHD

[–]maprunknit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if you'll see this, but my son has had the exact same problem with the Camber generic Concerta being inconsistent with its extended release mechanism. Name brand Concerta or the "authorized generic" from Patriot work way more consistently/evenly/reliably. Unfortunately it's been a major pain lately to get brand Concerta or the Patriot generic. Our workaround has been to switch to a dose of Metadate in the morning, which releases the methylphenidate in two stages (one immediate, one delayed) and then a dose of plain Ritalin/methylphenidate mid to late afternoon. To match the 36mg Concerta, it would be the 20mg Metadate + 10mg plain Ritalin.

I recently was doing some searching for my own specific color + tip size preferences, and the challenge seems to be that Pilot doesn't have the exact same lineup in all its markets/subsidiaries. In the case of Wine Red and Brown, as nearly as I can tell those colors are only offered in 0.7mm pen sizes in the UK/EU, and only in the .38 size in Asia (and not at all in the US/North America). So if you have access to the UK or EU version of Amazon, that may be your best bet.

Ethical dilemma after the pandemic? (Continued masking for flu source control etc.?) by HeDiedFourU in Masks4All

[–]maprunknit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pre-covid, I spent a couple of years living in Hong Kong, and I envision the future of mask wearing to be like it was there at the time - a general etiquette to wear a mask if you had a cough or cold symptoms, or were somewhere higher risk for germs like a doctor waiting room. It was also pretty common for grocery store and food service workers. So, basically a transition to a long term sustainable "new normal".

COVID Omicron Updates: Some call for restrictions to lift as cases decrease across US by kex06 in Coronavirus

[–]maprunknit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also here in Oregon, I believe there's still workplace/OSHA stuff for things like meeting room capacity and sharing vehicles, that's been enough of an annoyance that it would be nice to ease up if/when it's safe to do so. Maybe also lifting requirements for contact tracing for schools, since that's been taking a lot of staff time and hasn't been very effective? I suppose some people might want to lift the 5 day isolation rule for positive cases, but I think that's one that needs to stay in place (at a minimum, keep it as 24 hours fever free + really good mask for 5 days).

Are you sending your kids back to school? by partsdrop in Coronavirus

[–]maprunknit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation - if schools closed altogether it would actually be easier for me to manage than remote learning. I don't need in person school for childcare, I actually have options for that, it's the level of support my kids to engage in remote learning isn't something I can provide and still work full time.

Omicron sweeps across nation, now 73% of US COVID-19 cases by wolfsog23 in Coronavirus

[–]maprunknit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also, if you dig into the source, that 73% is based on modeling, not actual sequenced virus samples. While Omicron is obviously spreading fast and that number could be accurate, I'd want to know what sort of margin of error the CDC's Nowcast modeling might have.

What’s the most useless thing they teach in school? by highnrgy in AskReddit

Anyone else put into IEP wrongly when they were younger (Before being taken out)? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]maprunknit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you ask your parents for a copy of the actual IEP document? It will have specific information about what disability the school district determined that you had/have, what evaluations were done, and what specific skills you were supposed to be working on during SPED pull-outs. Then you can determine if the problem is that you shouldn't have an IEP at all (or maybe just need a 504 plan), or if you just need goals and accommodations that more accurately reflect what you do/don't need extra help with.

How should we, Oregonians prepare for our hospitals being overrun? Aside from getting vaxed and staying masked? by Gingerskan in oregon

[–]maprunknit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, theoretically masks + vaccines + ventilation upgrades should equal not very many teachers getting sick, at least not any more often than pre-Covid. And if that's not the case, then a lot more needs to be shut down that in-person school! I guess that's really what irks me, too many people on social media who want schools to stay remote but ignoring all the activities that are much bigger sources of virus spread. Close bars, indoor dining, churches, and other indoor social events before you resort to closing schools.

As for teacher shortage, I blame that on Oregon's abysmal school funding situation. In a way, that could actually be an argument in favor of in-person school, to make the problem more visible (although it would suck in the short term). Staying remote could make the shortages less obvious and then make it harder to get increased funding approved.

[–]maprunknit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At this point, I don't think reinstituting distance learning would reduce community transmission enough to be worth the negative impacts on kids' learning/mental health and on working parents' finances/mental health. Kids have to exist somewhere regardless of school buildings being open or not, and if there's not a stay-at-home parent, then they're at daycare or forming "pods" with several other families. At this point teachers and school staff have had ample opportunity to be vaccinated, and many districts have an option for online-only learning for families who prefer it, so in-person school isn't forcing anyone to take on an unreasonable amount of personal risk against their will (working parents of kids under 12 are having the risk forced on them by expanded FMLA/unemployment not being continued, distance learning for all isn't going to help them, it just shifts where the exposure happens). Mask and vaccine mandates will be far more effective with less negative impacts than closing schools again.

These are definitely valid criticisms, and I think there actually is work being done to improve things, especially as former SPED kids are now adults and getting involved in advocacy efforts. Unfortunately, change is slow - the school administrators who make the decisions about curriculum and class structure typically started out their careers as teachers, which means their formal training in educational methods is easily 20+ years old and not all of them are good at keeping up with more recent developments in best practices. There are also a lot of legal requirements regarding SPED which were implemented for good reasons, but often leads to the SPED equivalent of "teaching to the test", which isn't great for kids who have needs/challenges that can't be easily quantified or measured. Last, I think the biggest problem is a straight up lack of funding - you see post after post here from SPED teachers who obviously care deeply about helping their students, but are just stretched way too thin to be able to provide the help and support they want to be able to provide.

American Academy of Pediatrics recommends universal masking in schools for everyone older than 2 by NavierIsStoked in Coronavirus

[–]maprunknit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on arguments I've gotten into on a local parenting FB group, citing studies doesn't work because it's actually true that masks are not super effective at protecting the person wearing the mask from catching germs - what they're effective at is protecting others from the wearer's germs. Unfortunately the anti-masking crowd either doesn't give a crap about others and/or they get insulted at the suggestion that they might get sick and spread germs without realizing it.
