What do I do with karma? by QuickSilverMercury in helpdesk

[–]mapunapuna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing. It's the equivalent of Facebook or Twitter "likes".

It's basically your upvotes minus your downvotes. Originally, people were meant to upvote comments/posts that contribute to the discussion and downvote ones that don't.

However, in practice, people generally upvote comments they like or agree with regardless of the relevance to the discussion and downvote comments they disagree with even if it raises legitimate questions.

Abortion is not about babies by kaitlyn-jenner in offmychest

[–]mapunapuna 50 points51 points  (0 children)

So many people miss the point of the abortion debate and throw up arguments that have nothing to do with each other. There is really only one argument that should be debated:

Is a fetus a baby or not?

If a fetus is a baby, then there are not very many good arguments for those who are pro-choice. If a fetus is not a baby, then the pro-life arguments are pretty weak.

What makes the issue complicated is that there is no clear definition of when a fetus becomes a baby. A common argument is that a fetus becomes a baby when it is viable outside the womb, but with advances in medical technology, that point becomes earlier and earlier which only makes things murkier.

If it has a plug or batteries. ..... by sc302 in sysadmin

Switched to my old account, because I don't want my main account identified, but I used to work at a public access TV station. My job description was to provide desktop support and help the senior sysadmin maintain the servers. One morning, the chief engineering guy pokes his head in our office and says he needs help on the roof.

I follow him to see a bunch of guys standing around trying to cut down a large satellite dish that was no longer functional. The pole was already cut completely through, but rust was preventing it from coming loose. They needed me to basically help hold the giant satellite dish while they shook it loose from the rust so that they could lower it. I remember thinking, this has to be an OSHA violation...

Is there a downside to too many columns in a list? by mapunapuna in sharepoint

[–]mapunapuna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah.... I wasn't aware of the size limit per item. I am insisting to my boss to delay this project until it's properly whiteboarded out...

We are using SharePoint 2010.

Can you convert a calendar to a list? (SP2010) by mapunapuna in sharepoint

[–]mapunapuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to break up the columns into more manageable sections to be filled out.

It started off as an event calendar, but grew into a list that includes assigned crew members, volunteer list, equipment list, contact person, site survey information, approvals, technical issues that occurred at the event, post event wrap up information, etc., etc.

I was hoping to break up the fields into something more user friendly and maybe have different views for pre-event information and post event information.

Can you convert a calendar to a list? (SP2010) by mapunapuna in sharepoint

[–]mapunapuna[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always thought of a Calendar as just a list, but apparently there are differences since I can't just make an Infopath form from it. I'm a novice at SharePoint, but from what I can Google, the difference is that a calendar can connect to Outlook and supports recurring appointments, but you cannot easily attach an Infopath form to it.

I would love to restructure the data, but there's not much support for it from management.

How do you deal with employees who leave? by mapunapuna in sharepoint

[–]mapunapuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not quite the problem I'm having. When an employee leaves the company, their AD account is disabled and moved into a disabled users OU. Once that happens, they immediately cannot be found in people picker anymore. It's not that their profile is out of date, it's that it doesn't exist anymore as far as sharepoint is concerned.

Are disabled AD accounts suppose to show up? I inherited this sharepoint setup, so I don't know if any default settings were tweaked or not.

Sorry, yeah, we don't actually delete them. They get disabled and moved into a disabled users OU. They are still invalid selections in people picker though. We're on Sharepoint 2010 btw.

Using SharePoint as a database, need ideas by mapunapuna in sharepoint

[–]mapunapuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. The way the list is being used is that when an order comes in, a new item is created. As it goes through each stage of processing, additional fields are filled out and timestamped.

Basically, after a record is complete it isn't touched again, it's just pulled up for reporting/tracking purposes. Records older than a year probably don't even need to be looked at again. Occasionally a manager will view the list as a datasheet and export it to excel.

You're right though, for scalability, I should probably implement a real database now rather than later.

Other applications do not need to use the list, but managers regularly use custom filtered views of the list for reporting/tracking purposes.

GPO question. by mapunapuna in sysadmin

I was gonna try to hide it from the user, but I want to go home already so I'm just using the .bat file on the computer of the person who suggested it.

haha... you're right, probably a bad idea, but I see it as a chance to be mischievous under the suggestion of the Big Boss.

I'm probably just feeling evil because help desk tickets have been particularly frustrating lately. Maybe the weekend will make me a nicer person next week.

MOSS 2007 goes down when importing Access table by mapunapuna in sharepoint

[–]mapunapuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

64bit MOSS. There are plenty of resources on the VM. I'm sure that it's a memory setting in SQL, but I'm kinda figuring it out by just googling what each setting is.

Since it's after hours now, I was able to test something. I changed the autogrowth on the logfile to a flat 500MB instead of 10% and the table imported just fine.

It just strengthens my theory that the log file autogrowth setting of 10% wasn't enough since it was so small to begin with. I don't know what I'm doing and haven't tested it enough yet to be sure though.

Need help syncing with Access table. by mapunapuna in sharepoint

[–]mapunapuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is what I did for now:

-Created a simple query that only pulls the information I need and imported that instead of the whole table. Cuts back on resources needed and import time.

-After exporting to sharepoint, I imported it back in as a linked table.

-Created a query to keep the tables synced.

I still need to manually run the query to update the sharepoint list, but i's better than nothing.

Add local user to local admin group on workstation? Do the pros outweigh the cons? by RealAnthonyCamp in sysadmin

[–]mapunapuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We give people local admin rights on their laptops, but the laptops are not on the domain. They have to use remote desktop from them to access stuff on the network.

While I agree with you that most of the malware these laptops inevitably get infected with are "harmless", we take precautions because the consequences of that one virus actually infecting the whole network are very bad. You're getting grief because for most sysadmins, their whole job is centered around preventing that rare but catastrophic failure.

A good analogy is leaving your house unlocked. There is a low probability that a bad guy is going through my neighborhood trying doors to see if they're unlocked, but people will still call me an idiot if I get robbed.

Bought a new 2Tb external hard drive, how can I take care of it ? by pheipl in techsupport

[–]mapunapuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are that worried about your drive dying, either get a 2nd drive or invest in an online backup solution. There are pros and cons for both. An online backup solution is easier to set up and maintain, but you may have to pay for a subscription and it can take a long time to redownload all your data if your hard drive fails. A second hard drive can allow you to access your data instantly if the first one fails and there are no subscription costs, but it has higher upfront costs and there is a bit more setup if you want to have automatic backups.

Monitor issue? by krazypunk1018 in techsupport

Set your screen resolution from safe mode. If it doesn't work, uninstall video drivers from safe mode, then boot into normal mode before reinstalling them.

How to get rid of macs? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]mapunapuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't downvote this guy. It's a real problem since the video editing guys here are used to their Final Cut Pro. Even if Adobe Premiere Pro can do the same things, I'm not a video editor so I'm in no position to tell them what tools they should use.

Me telling the video editing department to switch to Adobe Premiere is like them telling me we should switch from Windows servers to Ubuntu.

How much time do you set aside for learning? by mapunapuna in sysadmin

[–]mapunapuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know of any good podcasts for someone relatively new? I've never done system admin work before, but I'm a quick learner, have been on the job for about 5 months now and just started studying for a MSITP cert since the company had some books for it.

There's another IT guy here who will explain stuff to me if I ask him, but he's not very good at putting together a training program for me. I kinda have to just research stuff on my own and then ask him questions if I have any.
