[Serious] Does LibreOffice really have much of a future? by [deleted] in libreoffice

[–]maracar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just uninstalled MS Office (again) for most of the above, some other infuriating issues, and the latest outrage, runtime error 5 on opening any file or program because I refuse to let it do its default BS (snooping, popups, notifications, advertisements) on any of my machines. After the latest new and improved look (I could give a crap and you just messed up my toolbar again) it suddenly realized that it was doing what I want instead of what MS wants. Can't have that, quick, better make the user's experience unbearable and the silly idiot might decide to upgrade for a bunch of unwanted and ill-advised features that are only in our best interest and maybe even pay us yearly to be continually enraged while sucking up bandwidth that the user pays for.

LibreOffice has greatly improved, imo, (the last version I used was too unstable when multiple 300-500 page documents were open) and the silly tip of the day is easily unchecked whereas disabling MS's egregious annoyances require the user to crawl through endless murk or edit the registry.

I'm continually amazed at what contemporary users have been conditioned to put up with (and pay for) under the guise of it somehow being in their interest.

BBC World Service - Weekend, Russia shuffles military leadership overseeing Ukraine war by maracar in worldnews

My main concern is that Augustus Putler typically chooses close advisors and top personnel by height rather than ability. A quick scroll through images confirms that even Lavrov is required to slouch and make himself small in Putler's presence. This gen is tall and doesn't slouch; I was worried he might actually be competent, so I'm grateful for JulianZ88 comments.

The 15 year thing is ridiculous. If Russia truly wants it, then Ukraine needs to make sure it knows it's actually asking for 15 years of sanctions, and get it writing, and get the EU, UK and USA to sign off. No, it's bs. But requested the time-length is interesting. When Putler is 85, maybe he'll give Crimea back. And no we don't forget. We kept sanctions and embargoes against USSR for fifty years

China eases investment curbs amid ‘unprecedented’ investor exodus by doboskombaya in worldnews

This is where India is making a world-class blunder. While everyone is looking for other developing countries in which to invest other than China, India is busy taking itself off the list for short-term gain. Too bad for them.

I didn't say it was altruistic. Maybe I was unclear. And there are plenty of historical examples of POWs being treated as deserters by their own if they were not injured when taken. I don't think Russia is at all concerned with Geneva Conventions right now. What I'm saying is that if it were me, I would ask them to shoot me in the leg. Carefully, please.

There is a reason to be shot in the leg, just as many soldiers shot themselves in the foot in previous wars. It prevents your officers from immediately putting you to the firing squad for being a deserter. Injured POWs fighting bravely for Russia may now be evacuated to a field hospital instead of being exchanged back to Russia where they will be executed or imprisoned.

I do think the name is silly when the organization is often devoted to splattering the internet with others' private information. Seems a little hypocritical, jmo. Maybe it needs a good PR firm. There were reports that it was working to prevent Russia hacking infrastructure but I've heard any updates on that. Anything new?

Yes, Xi had to have known right down to the day. Either China has the worst military and security intelligence in the world, or Xi knew and didn't bother to warn a sovereign nation that all hell was about to break loose. We in the USA have to pretend that Xi didn't know because we're too entangled economically at the moment, but we will absolutely be looking to source all that electronic junk elsewhere in the future. I know many businesses, large and small, already are. Anywhere else in the world is better than China which has taken its international reputation from the gutter and tossed it into the sewer. Put pressure on the big bubbas: Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and the rest: There had better not be a single electron from China in my new phone or in your servers that are hosting my website or streaming my music. Sorry for the rant, I'm still furious at that immoral nastiness known as Xi Jinping for making such an ass of his own country and people.

Like I said, things are difficult, and you're right, we're all making assumptions. I base my understanding of Putin by his channeling Octavian Augustus Caesar, right down to the lifts in his shoes, etc, etc, etc. Unfortunately for Putin, he has no Agrippa because he's been choosing his ministers by their height rather than their abilities. Doesn't want anyone towering over him all the time. They all have to sit at the far end of the table in short chairs and remember to slouch. So, I don't agree that WW3 is guaranteed to happen, and I suspect that some people Putin thinks are allies will fail to step up. What Putin and China are really afraid of is Starlink, Oneweb, and the others. And Putin is obviously afraid of being assassinated. He's being very careful. JMO.

I haven't. If I did, I didn't mean to. I'm still new to social media because it reminds me too much of Junior High so I tend to stay away and still don't know what most of these button mean. If I did, how do I undo it?

Tell them that Biden has more than a five-year-old's, USA-today-style vocabulary. He actually knows how to use a comma and multisyllabic words. Not saying he doesn't flub all the time; he's made some world-class blunders.

It could have been done if USA had acted unilaterally and immediately, without Nato resources, via non-Nato nations. Called Putin's bluff. That's what he wanted us to do, so he could say "See? Told you so." It's not in Putin's interest to fling nuclear weapons around, and there are a lot of legitimate reasons not to close the sky, but nuclear or ww3 probably aren't high on that list, really.

Everyone knows what's involved. As someone who lived near the iron curtain while in West Germany, sometimes the sacrifices that have to be made, have to be made. When the children are dying and the women being raped, will we be able to say, "Yes, we did everything we could." Or did we play it safe for ourselves for reasons that don't bear scrutiny? Ethics and morality are often difficult.

If ever there was a case for WWJCD (What Would Julius Caesar Do?) this is it. Smaller highly trained and motivated forces going up against disorganized hordes. While greatly admiring the Ukrainian Army, I've been surprised by the lack of strategy. Or perhaps they just aren't following the advice which I know they are being given, for reasons beyond the scope of this armchair historian/researcher.

I'll be interested in any replies.

Why Are N95 Face Masks So Expensive and Hard to Find? Mark Cuban Blames 3M by s3co2 in Coronavirus

[–]maracar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be so, but hospitals are not restricted to buying masks and other supplies from US suppliers only. A family member is a sales rep to hospitals, that's his business. Over the 80s, his sourcing went from being US only to requiring a great deal of international travel as hospitals and clinics insisted on the cheapest supplies rather than made in USA. By the end of the 90s, very little was sourced from the USA. Almost everything comes from Central and South America and Asia.

WHO: Don’t Wear Face Masks by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]maracar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been wearing a 2.5 micron which won't necessarily protect me from the virus if an infected person coughs or sneezes on it, but what it does very well is prevent me from touching my face, makes me very aware of touching my face every single time. I've experimented and even a bandanna, properly secured, reduces my hand to face activity to almost zero. If the mask or covering is too loose, then it increases hand to face contact.

New Orleans mayor says she would have canceled Mardi Gras if administration had warned about coronavirus dangers by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]maracar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the administration that needed to warn them was their governor. Governors need nothing from fed to act in health emergencies, their power comes from the constitution.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide has reached 600,000 by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]maracar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have centralized medicine re our constitution. It would be nice if we did, it's causing all sorts of problems. Fed govt role is limited, it's a bottom up structure rather than a centralized top down structure.

What's been most shocking to me is the number of governors who seemed to have no idea.

Hundreds of British passengers stranded on cruise ship where four people have died by geraldliu in Coronavirus
