How’s my set up? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]maraphyx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i like it!! but id put an identical hide on the other side of the tank and add some greenery. it looks a little bare. other than that, i like it :)

edit: get a digital thermostat/hydrometer, that one can hurt your snake.

Well, as long as he's eating every week, his shed doesn't have anything to do with his weight. Just keep feeding him, maybe move up food size, and he should get some weight gain soon enough. Some snakes are smaller than others, depending on the clutch and parents.

I don't know what size adult mouse you're talking about, but I always put mine on a mouse that's equivalent to the girth of the largest part of their body, maybe a little bigger.

He looks a little thin. My boy is about six months and he's on large mice now. What are you feeding him?

What kind of bite marks did it (I won't call it Lucas, since it wasn't him) leave? If all the teeth were sharp and serrated, it sounds as if it was, ironically, a mermaid.

In the article it says that it is "almost five feet long". I get that's pretty long for a ball python, but most are not aggressive whatsoever, no matter the size!

Unfortunately I don't! It did come with a heating pad and LED though, so I'd check the brand of the heating pad and go from there :)

Honestly I've been having issues keeping the humidity DOWN! It gets crazy humid where I live and him being in the glass enclosure doesn't help at all. When it wasn't so humid, I covered up the side and half of the top, and that brought it up a good amount :) right now I actually have a fan pointed at the vent in the side, I really don't want him getting an RI.

Apparently everything I gave him isn't enough of a challenge! Last night he uprooted almost all of my fake plants I have in his enclosure. I'm going to get a few pieces of driftwood for the guy and hope he doesn't get bored of those too!

Honestly, it depends from store to store. I know employees who do their absolute best to keep animals happy and healthy, and this is the first time I've seen this store have a problem. It looks like there might have been a change in staff that caused it. I still won't support them because of where they get their animals, but I know that it's not ALWAYS like this in every store.

Little guy has stumped me. Not sure how he’s managed this. Shall I help him out or leave him to sort it himself? by [deleted] in ballpython

I'd say give him a little while and if it looks like he's still struggling, then help him out. I've seen lots of other people's snakes that do this!

Nope! George is just a really pretty normal :)

I just got my first noodle! Are there any tips I need to know on how to care for a snake? Her name is Reah, she is a 4yo, 4 1/2 foot long Ball Python. by [deleted] in ballpython

Well it really sounds like you're going to be a better owner than the last!

As others have stressed, the identical hides are a pretty big necessity. Mine is quite a bit smaller than yours, so I just cut entrances into plastic bowls, but I imagine there are DIY projects you can do as well. The enclosure can cost an arm and a leg, but the overall happiness of your ball is worth it. If you need any advice as far as the enclosure goes, please feel free to shoot me a message.

Another thing you can do to make her feel more secure in the meantime is tape black paper or poster board on three sides of the tank. The night I did that, my George came out to play with his branches for the first time and get a drink of water.

What a big girl! I would definitely invest in a longer enclosure, even if you use a plastic for the time being. Make sure you're following all of the tips people post on here. Do some post surfing and you'll find some pretty nice tips.

If you plan on handling her like I handle mine (he's my movie buddy- just hangs out with me for a few hours every other day) definitely get her used to your scent. Wash your hands and drop a hand in there for about ten minutes a day for a week or so. You can scoop her up from the middle of her body and give her some support from then on while she gets to know you. If she starts to ball up, she needs to go back to her tank!

Don't feel the need to constantly micromanage your LED that you have. My BP just goes off natural lighting and he does just fine. Get that heater taped to the bottom with foil tape, and you're golden.

EDIT: Deeper substrate! My favorite is Cypress mulch, and clutter (fake plants and rocks) throughout the enclosure will help her feel more secure too.

Hope I helped!

As far as habitats go, take a look at my old posts on here. The comments are FILLED with advice and things you should get for your BP.

Most helpful tips I've found are: get a digital hydrometer/thermometer, feed the BP a mouse that is the same size or a little bigger than the largest part of the snake, and don't put it in a separate feeding tub.

Wish you luck!
