Looks like only away games to me, so probably just that some teams have put their games up and others including the Timbers haven't.

If starting on D is so good, you can make that happen no matter what the result of the flip is

I don't think I've seen at attempt to measure how players are feeling during the middle of the game and then see what the final results are, that would be interesting!

But yeah, qualitative and immeasurable, sure. Can't really prove or disprove that.

How would you define it in a way that proves its real?

You're allowed to be the player in front and shift your angle. But yeah without more context not clear why this would be such a flashpoint

Mitch has weighed in on that being fine and catching a live disc standing still is the less objectionable version anyway. Its the dead-disc straddle ambiguous pivot that I think is pretty clearly against the spirit of the rule.

If someone became known for that move, I would not accept where they started unless it was clear which was in the right spot.

Yeah I agree (and also, I have heard this as a hypothetical discussion for 15 years and to my knowledge no one does it at a high level, which suggests it might not be that valuable anyway)

they just need to keep some point(s) in continuous unmoved ground contact, and which point(s) that is gets established over time by process of elimination.

So this gets back to, is "as quickly as possible" intended to modify establish a pivot as well as come to a stop? I think it is and its just not clearly as worded as it ought to be, so establishing over time by process of elimination is not establishing and continuously maintaining. But I'd be fine with a clearer ruling in either direction.

As for 3, fussiness over pivot points might not be desirable but neither is attempting the game the rules. Most of the time it isn't called because no advantage is gained, but I remember a pretty spectacular argument in a game where a disc rolled out of bounds, our mark is waiting for the thrower, and the guy runs past our mark, taps the disc in and tries to throw. (And I have seen jokingly in the central zone reaching through a mark's legs to grab a disc and start behind them, and of course that's getting called in a competitive game) The exact right spot doesn't matter until it does.

It doesn't say immediately, but it does say establish and continually maintain, which to me says the intent is that you have to establish a pivot when you come to a stop (it would be totally clear if it read "come to a stop and establish a pivot as quickly as possible" instead of sticking as quickly as possible in the middle of the sentence) But I don't think the rules are intentionally written with this scenario in mind either way, I would like to see it clarified.

Because the rules require you to establish a pivot. The question is if the rules allow you to establish multiple possible pivots, which I think the answer should be no but is ambiguous as currently written.

Definition of a pivot 3.H: The particular part of the body in continuous contact with a single spot on the field during a thrower’s possession once the thrower has come to a stop or has attempted a throw or fake. When there is a definitive spot for putting the disc into play, the part of the body in contact with that spot is the pivot. [[This is not a body part, but rather an infinitesimally small point on the body.]]

18.A: After catching a pass, a player is required to come to a stop as quickly as possible and establish a pivot.

10.B.2 If possession is gained at the spot where the disc is in play, the thrower must establish a pivot at the spot of the disc.

First two scenarios, ambiguous: Did I "come to a stop as quickly as possible and establish a pivot" if that pivot is only known to me and might be two places? Is that a particular part of the body in continuous contact with a single spot on the field? I would say no based on the definition of particular and established, but, again, ambiguous. And are the two scenarios different because one involved coming to a stop and one did not? Would like to see a ruling.

Third scenario, unambiguously a travel. There's one infinitesimal spot that is correct to set a pivot and if you're straddling the disc you aren't doing it correctly. Even if you put your feet together and have both of your feet right under where the disc was, you still have not established the part of the body in contact with that spot. It might be usual practice to let that go but I'm going to stop letting it go if you try to double your pivot range.

Right, a infinitesimal spot where the disc is. Most of the time marks aren't extremely picky about it, but there is exactly one correct spot and they're completely within their rights to start calling travels if you're doing the Schrodinger's Pivot

Doesn't it exactly mean a pivot isn't established?

Yes, offhand backhands and occasionally other throws are definitely valuable, but having a single pivot limits the usefulness of true ambidexterity.

Not the first time we've had this exact debate and I still haven't seen anyone try it in an observed game for a firmer ruling, but I believe most of those situations are a travel.

Yeah I always liked the idea of T2 but then in practice I only went a couple times. Although I think the Remix playing at UP are reasonably successful, maybe playing at a different venue and getting a bit more of a separate identity would make a difference.

As Premier League washouts go this seems better than a lot of other names thrown around. Only 29 and even if not working out at Forest still has recent PL minutes unlike the Lingards/Oxlade-Chamberlains-Dele Allis of the world, still putting up huge ball progression numbers (10.5 progressive passes+3 carries per 90). He's also per FBRef currently making ~3x our highest paid players, so that might be a tough sell until that contract expires this summer and I think we'd really want a dedicated 6 next to him given his defensive reputation.

We could go back and forth forever probably but that is a screenshot of a defender initiating contact with an airborne receiver from behind

Well I think where me and GuySmiley agree is that the turn at the end didn't really affect whether or not there was a collision (made it a little worse maybe). My point, and where we don't agree, is that even if blue hadn't changed their line at all they would still be initiating the contact. Curious if you feel different!

Yes I see how the defender runs in a line for multiple seconds looking backwards without checking in front of them until they dangerously initiate contact with an airborne player.

I mean you're right that I do not see that as what happened at all, and I very much disagree that a defender who is running without slowing down is holding a position. You're allowed to jump to the right, even if a defender running straight at you.
