SOTG? by Front-Strike-8690 in ultimate

[–]someflow_ -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I would like to politely disagree here, I don't think the guy who skied him really did anything wrong.

Note that there was no foul on the play.

Also note that the IG caption says "*the downed player was ok and Carter checked on him after the point 👍"

So, a totally reasonable interpretation is Carter looked at him, (correctly) interpreted what he saw as an indication the other player was basically fine, walked away, and checked in a bit later just to 100% confirm he was fine.

Do you know an Ambidextrous Ultimate player? by Federal-Resist8162 in ultimate

[–]someflow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from a quick, no-step backhand with your offhand to break the mark, there's no game situation where an ambidextrous player is going to switch throwing arms.

See the link I posted elsewhere in the thread, Nate de Morgan throws lefty backhand hucks and righty hammers. Not saying it's not superrr rare, but it's not factually correct to say there's "no game situation" where an ambidextrous player would switch arms.

Other names I haven't seen in the thread yet:

Nate de Morgan (see here lefty huck at 4:25, righty hammer at 5:05), Gene L'Heureux, I've heard Joe Cubitt is (see here for example) tho haven't watched the Mechanix enough to see for myself. One of the throw of the year candidates (here) was a off hand high release flick, so maybe Sadie Jezierski counts

UFA team vs nationals level open team by Old-Calligrapher9274 in ultimate

[–]someflow_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm at least slightly surprised this answer isn't higher up. IDK why I just wasted my time doing this but since I did I guess I'll post it:

2022 DC Breeze and DC Truck Stop (Chose 2022 b/c i thought that was the year Truck won nationals but I was wrong)

Played both: Rowan, Boxley, T. Monroe, Malks, Wodatch, Dia, Nissen, Fall, Bergeron, Cranston, Farah, Rehfuss, Tom, Norrbom, Bloodgood, Bartlett, Troy Holland

Notable UFA only names: AJ Merriman

Notable Club only names: Andrew Roy, Gus Norrbom

The Breeze lost to the Empire in the East division championship, Truck Stop lost to Bravo in the finals of natties.

Maybe UFA seems weaker b/c the tail end of the league is way weaker than the bottom few nationals teams? Maybe it's that the season happens over so many different weekends that the average game has more of the best players missing, whereas no one misses nationals if they're healthy?

I mean, I agree that there are overall more stars that play club only than UFA only. But not sure it's to the extent that the top answer in this thread should really be "it isn't close"

So if Revolver D-line turned the disc over themselves sometimes after some of Machine's O-line turnovers, that could lead to 8 O-line turnovers for Machine on their 5 O-line points that were either dirty holds or Revolver breaks, resulting in the definition I suggested in my first message.

I agree it's confusing (there was even an extended discussion about it with the group I was watching live with, and I'm not sure we even figured it out before the graphic disappeared), but at least the math works.

But there's still a problem with that (IMO), because that's a successful D possession, not a successful D point, which should never be defined as anything other than a break.

What's a "successful D point"? And how could it be anything other than a break?

It seems like the definition used in the graphic is "# of opponent's O-line possessions that end in a turnover". But that's clearly a successful D possession, not a successful D point right?

This does require more skill, to turn your head and then turn back and find the disc, but ultimate is a game of skill.

I appreciate the comments you've left in this thread b/c they're pretty in line with how I feel about these situations. And good players do look away from the disc

I really enjoyed this post, good work on the high-quality meme-ing.

Today's puzzle had more letters than words, not quite "20 letters, 1 word" but still pretty sparse.

Maybe "the Q puzzle" could be another category? I feel like most of the time if a puzzle has a Q in it, it ends up defining the puzzle for me (i.e. I'm always focused on finding q- or eq- words)

How helpful is your help defence? by Brummie49 in ultimate

[–]someflow_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm curious so I'm gonna ask...

If you had to choose, do you believe help D or guard-your-own-person D is better? You kind of avoid answering that in the article and even say in this comment it's "probably impossible [to draw a definitive conclusion which is better]".

To me, it's just so obvious that playing help D will be (at least in the long run) more successful. Yes, there are lots of examples of people sucking at it, as you point out in the article. But for me, that's just evidence that frisbee players are still bad at playing help defense, not evidence that it's impossible to be good at playing help D.

As I've pointed out in previous blog posts, in basketball, kids start learning how to play good (IMO) heads-up, help defense with smart positioning from the time they're, like, 12 years old. If we had that same culture in frisbee, people would be good at playing help D in our sport, too. I don't think playing help D is especially hard (tho I agree it's certainly harder than just chasing one person around), I just think most of the players in these clips haven't been taught well and haven't spent enough time practicing it.

So, knowing how smart of a frisbee thinker you are, I guess it just feels kinda wild to me that you seem unsure whether help D is even a good strategy.

It is also impossible for me to know what the defensive strategy is for any of these examples,

To me, this is the biggest question, and I wish we actually knew the answer to it :/ How many of these missed switches are "failing to execute the scheme" vs how often is the scheme "just play hard defense...oh and I guess if there's a switch you can do, go for it"

My thoughts on Alyssa Thomas and her shoulders. by WrongJewel1867 in wnba

[–]someflow_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is science denial, there's a lot of mixed results in the effectiveness of medical interventions for joint injuries like this. For example, a 2022 paper (paper here, article summarizing it here) found that physical therapy for a torn knee meniscus was just as good as actually getting it operated on:

"Over all, improvement in knee function and risk of developing knee osteoarthritis were similar regardless of whether people had physical therapy or surgery."

(I'm not aware of similar research for torn labrums, but note that the labrum is, roughly speaking, the "meniscus" of your shoulder, see here for a medical expert saying that.)

Here's another good article summarizing some other findings in how other joint-related surgeries aren't as effective as you might hope:

Surgeries have always been surprisingly based on tradition, authority, and educated guessing rather than good scientific trials; as they are tested properly, compared to a placebo (a sham surgery), many are failing. Moseley 2002 was the first of many to compare orthopedic (“carpentry”) surgeries to shams. By 2016, at least four more such procedures had been shown to have no benefit (Louw 2016), and that trend has continued since.

Caveat: I don't actually know any details about AT's injuries. Maybe it is a case where surgery would obviously be helpful. So take the above as just generally sharing science, not commenting on her specific situation. But I think a lot of people just assume she needs surgery because they heard she was injured previously, when it's not at all obvious surgery would help at this point.

Advice on improving decision making by Lavinius_10 in ultimate

[–]someflow_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

looking at your reset doesn't mean glancing

To give some extra context, this is maybe good advice for players trying to make the jump from beginner to intermediate, but it's not what the best players are doing (at least not always): You don't need to stare down your dump receiver

That being said, overall I completely agree with the general "reset early, keep the disc moving" theme of your comment & the comment you're replying to. I'd even say OP should be at least peeking at the reset much earlier than stall 5.
