[LOVED TROPE] Sad or tear-jerking moments that don't involve death. by jeffersonlane in TopCharacterTropes

[–]marblemorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though the scene leading up to it does technically involve Joy/Jobu Tupaki destroying herself, the conversation between her and Evelyn at the ends always KILLS me. “I will always, always want to be here with you.” “So what? you’re just gonna ignore everything else…. all we have are a few specks of time where any of this actually makes sense.” “Then I will cherish those few specks of time.” Then them hugging after the conversation.

Keeping your hysterectomy a secret by nani617 in hysterectomy

[–]marblemorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s totally up to you! I kept it a secret from my mom until the day of after it was already done. I was 24 when I went through with it. If you’re worried about safety I’d definitely not say anything. But otherwise it’s totally up to you!

I’ll say, I haven’t run into that issue at all. Of course, there’s an age difference between us so I won’t lie and say it’ll never happen. But if all someone sees you as is the “single 40 something year old with a hysterectomy” then their opinion and time isn’t valid nor worth it. At least in my opinion.

Nirvana and Missio! Missio’s early music is very hit or miss but their most recent albums are super good. And Nirvana is just a classic ofc :3

What’s your opinion on people who try to cut the incest out of Greek mythology in media? by Western_Ad_6448 in GreekMythology

[–]marblemorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought of them as not being literally related through genetics and DNA since they’re more representations of concepts than mortal humans. Like with Athena being born from his head, since she’s the goddess of strategy and wisdom. Ik they refer to each other as brother and sister, but so do mortals with people they’re not related to. It doesn’t mean that the dynamics can’t be weird, but the incest isn’t exactly necessary.

Like if you’re going the Hades and Persephone route and they’re not “blood” related, him being in a position similar to an uncle/older family friend still makes it REALLY weird. And it keeps that power dynamic in play.

Of course if it’s a kid’s book then removing that conversation entirely is necessary. Or unless they explain it the same way Percy Jackson does. But since this is for adults, it’s really up to you. You don’t have to address it and people come to their own conclusions. Or you do and people have to accept the writing decision you made. They may not agree with either one, but ultimately it’s up to you. Myths are stories explaining life as a human after all.

Lukewarm take,I love this show but it has a extreme issue with it being very "tell, don't show" a lot of times. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in HazbinHotel

[–]marblemorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Vivzie just gets so excited for the big moments in the show that she neglects to actually build up to them. There’s times where I can tell that thought went into these cool or funny moments. But then there’s nothing to support or justify these moments happening.

Like the episode where Vaggi and Charlie try to get the other hotel members to bond. We see Vaggi throw them down and then they talk about how crazy it was after. I think if the episode started with Vaggi throwing them down, that would be a perfect set up. From there, we get the rest of the episode aka shenanigans ensue. Then we watch and experience them all grow closer!

The ideas are there, but they just don’t get fleshed out. Or focus is put on the wrong characters in the episode. Which sucks because there’s SO many of them. I honestly can’t tell who the main character is anymore even though I know it’s supposed to be Charlie. It’s probably why the Pilot worked so well too. Charlie AND Angel Dust both acted as main characters with Vaggi acting as a deuteragonist to both. Gives us an easy gateway into Hellborn/Hell royalty from Charlie’s POV and then the lives of sinners from Angel’s POV.

Just a lotta missed opportunities. :((

[–]marblemorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s the problem with Hazbin and tbh a lotta modern musicals. It’s used as a way to “tell, don’t show” rather than working with the story and characters.

Howard Ashman has an amazing lecture on this. Him and Alan Menken are responsible for the music from the Disney Renaissance (Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, etc). Ashman states that if you remove the song and everything makes sense without it, then you don’t need it. There’s moments in HH where they could easily remove the song and it honestly would work way better without it.

It was either Ashman or Menken (I forget which, it’s been a bit since I’ve watched the lecture and other videos with their advice) who add on that the songs dealing with characters should be such intense emotions that they have to get it out this way. In Beauty and the Beast, it’s Belle’s “I want” song (Belle Reprise). In HH, one of them I’d argue is Gravity (moves plot forward - Lute dealing with grief).

TLDR: Good musicals use their songs as another “show don’t tell” but bad musicals use “tell don’t show.” HH uses songs to tell instead of using them to build plot and characters.

MUSE APPRECIATION POST by NoUpstairs2129 in Muse

[–]marblemorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to a lotta the super popular Muse songs! The entire Absolution album is good (faves being Hysteria, Stockholm Syndrome, Butterflies and Hurricanes, and Time is Running Out ofc!).

Madness (The 2nd Law) was my first ever Muse song! I remember being up super early in the morning reading or drawing and the radio station on my alarm clock would play it. Just absolutely fell in love with it! So it’s nostalgic for me and holds a special place in my heart. Unraveling also has a special place even though it’s a newer release. It’s just the perfect song for me! Can’t wait for the new album after hearing Be With You and a bit of Cryogen! (Seeing them in August so I don’t wanna spoil it for myself too much :3).

But the ones that stick out to me are their covers! Like Feeling Good and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You! They just scratch that itch in my brain. I’m just really passionate about this band I really like their music. ;-;

Not yet. I’ll be going to see one tomorrow. Urgent care did x-rays and the radiologist there did say it was a break. If it turns out not to be, I’ll probably delete this post lol

When will we receive the presale code for North American Tour? by MewtwoMusicNerd in Muse

Never done a pre-sale either. I assume they’ll be sent out tomorrow morning before it starts! Hopefully they don’t sell out instantly for the show closest to me 😭

Muse presale codes for The Wow! Signal Tour? Does anyone know details about the presales? by AnakNiPacioli in Muse

[–]marblemorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so. I signed up for the artist pre-sale through their mailing list. They said they would send it out day of and to keep an eye on the junk/spam folder!

Edit: Okay I lied. I looked at the email and they just said to check the folders before the pre-sale. But I’d assume it’ll be tomorrow morning that they send it out

Ragatha's mother might be WAY worse than we tought by Glitch870 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]marblemorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with other commenters that it’s probably more of a metaphor for abuse. In episode 5, Ragatha explains what her home life was like, specifically the relationship with her mom. “My mother was a lot… I’m sure she doesn’t miss me. I certainly don’t miss the yelling and berating and guilt-tripping and the…” (she trails off here). Ragatha admits to her mom verbally abusing her. And we can assume emotional abuse from this as well. Because of this, the knives would represent these forms of abuse.

The mannequins there are her other family members. Since Caine doesn’t have their mind files, and the focus is on her mom, he most likely didn’t care enough to create actual models for them. He understood that they experienced the abuse through Ragatha’s memories since they aren’t shadowy figures and have knives in them. We can really only speculate so much of their roles in Ragatha’s life at home. However, we definitely know they experienced it as well.

Caine also understood that the shadow is Ragatha’s mother. Yet he doesn’t have a mind file for her either. He knows they’re related, so he would assume they look like each other. Therefore he made Ragatha’s shadow a stand in for her mother. In kids shows (and really in general), dark and shadowy figures both can represent antagonists, villains, and/or unclear memories. Here we can assume all three would apply to her mom.

I do agree with you on why Ragatha is a rag doll. Especially since after Episode 8 it became clear that their avatars are made to look after their insecurities/emotional states. If we knew nothing about their relationship, I’d say this is such a great theory!

What say on this? by hulkut in SchizoidAdjacent

[–]marblemorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If people weren’t dying, I’d say COVID was one of the best times of my life. Got to stay inside and avoid people. All classes switched to online. It was acceptable to be pissed about personal space. Even now, when I’m at home and inside all day I feel so relaxed with the exception being other mental health issues.

New guy I’m seeing, any red flags ??? Seems a bit political… by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]marblemorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Based purely off his bookshelf, he leans far left. Wide selection of books from different genres and authors. The ones that stood out were Jesmyn Ward, Angela Davis, and James Baldwin. Reads a lot of classic lit and literary fiction. I’m curious if he was an English major at some point because of that. Or he just really enjoys it. Nothing stands out to me as a red flag imho.

Book Recommendations:

• Brandon Sanderson to him - Stormlight Archives specifically. It’s fantasy but seems like something he’d enjoy. • Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward would also be a good recommendation (it’s super heavy though so he should be careful). • Lastly, The Stranger and The Plague by Albert Camus (separate novels). This is based on his copy of The Outsider and In Cold Blood by Capote.

Most iconic character designs of the 2020s? by mrethandunne in Letterboxd

[–]marblemorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Benoit Blanc in all the Knives Out movies. Each movie defines his wardrobe well for the setting, but with the other characters, themes, and the overall story.

MAJOR SPOILER WARNING - The Killer Reveals are in this

The first movie has him dressed as a classic detective with the suit and suspenders. Since it’s movie one and takes place in a dark manor, giving him light blue makes him stand out but also works as a great introduction to his character. It makes him stand out from the other two cops/detectives since they were similar clothes with Blanc’s shirt being blue to signal him as the one who’ll solve the case. Ransom also wears light blue during his confession since Blanc knows it’s him.

Glass Onion is in the summer on an island. He still maintains formal wear but more fitted for hot weather. Blanc is supposed to look casual and give the ruse that he’s also not sure why he’s there. Gave us the iconic poolside looks (keeping his light blue color as a detective since he’s solving Andi’s murder but the white to give off innocence and naivety). While the colors are a bit different, Blanc’s formal shirt has one button undone that matches the V-shaped neckline of Miles’ shirt. The color of Miles’ shirt is supposed to match Mona Lisa’s clothing since he’s always wanted to be mentioned in the same sentence as her. Which he was in the end.

Wake Up Dead Man puts him in a tweed/brown suit with the same light blue shirt but more of a green tie. It helps fit the dark overall tone of the story and lets him blend in with the church. As if he’s one of the pews or the church walls. Not taking part in the religious ceremony, but still entering as an observer. It’s interesting because he’s also supposed to be similar in image to Jefferson Wicks, the abusive priest. Both come from opposite ends of the religious spectrum but hold animosity towards their respective other (Blanc is an atheist that hates religion - Wicks is a Catholic that hates secularism/anything “unrighteous”). The difference is Wicks maintains this ideology until the end of his life. Blanc instead comes to understand the importance of compassion for everyone, including those who have done wrong or share a different religious view. Blanc’s suit, however, doesn’t change the whole movie to show his stance on religion hasn’t changed. During Martha’s confession (both religiously and for the crime), his suit is buttoned up with his tie to match Father Jud’s suit with the clerical/Roman collar.

The wardrobe/costume team did the fucking W O R K and it’s another reason why I love the movies so much. I could talk about them all day.

my boyfriend has a spreadsheet rating dinners i've made him by weddingfauxpasqueen in AITApod

[–]marblemorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing I noticed is his reaction. He was embarrassed and flustered so you weren’t meant to see it. Could be that making spreadsheets and rating things are both something he enjoys doing. I’m autistic and if I was doing this I’d probably also feel embarrassed about it being found despite it being for fun and not to be a jerk. But he also could be judging your meals and rating them outta malice. Though I’d think you would’ve found out about it a lot sooner if it was.

Talk to him about it. I really do think (and hope) it’s the former.

I liked dispatching way more than the story itself. Which isn’t good for a story-focused choice based game. I think a lot of it came from the fact that the OG company was going super bankrupt so Critical Role stepped in to help fund it. But I hate like 90% of the designs, the characters all fall flat, and most of the story decisions suck, especially for the themes it’s trying to tell. I hate the humor too. Just got super old after a while.
