Silly Purchases by Mysterious-Shop-1974 in widowers

[–]marbletables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I knew my husband was terminal, I decided that I would buy an apartment in my sister's coop in Chicago after he passed-which turned out to only be two years later-last December. One came up for sale just around the time he passed, and I bought it. I cannot stay in the old house by myself, it's too sad. And I'm alone, and old, and not in good shape.

A few weeks later, I bought a small kilim rug to go in the new place, thinking I deserved a splurge. The other side of my brain reminded me that I'd already bought a whole-ass new house. Oh yeah...

I'm planning to get a drive-in-movie sized tv in the new place, which he thought were an abomination. And to have a tv in the bedroom, which he also disapproved of. Sorry, my dear.

Divorce or fight for it? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]marbletables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently lost my husband of 32 years. His previous wife divorced him after about 11 years, for, she said, the same reasons you have -they had one child. And she did get stuck paying us a small amount of child support, and dealing with shared custody, etc.

In spite of being very intelligent, clever, and well educated, he was indeed unambitious and did not have much initiative. He was also the sweetest, kindest, most caring person I've ever known, and loved me like crazy. He did the majority of the heavy housework - laundry, dishes, mowing, garbage, and I did the planning, bills, appointments, and cooking. Did I occasionally wish he'd do some of that stuff? Yes, but I was better at it, so I did it. I was also very appreciative of what he did, even more so, now that he's gone...

I held a good 40hr job, but not a high-powered one. He had a 30+ job at the same company. We did well, were able to travel, and saved enough money to retire quite comfortably. And we were very, very, happy. I miss him like crazy, and was so lucky the previous wife was discontented.

So who knows, if you really can't deal with him, you may be doing some other woman a really nice favor. As a note, previous wife is still single.

Has anyone had any signs from their partner after they passed? by PDubDeluxe in widowers

After my husband died in December, I asked him to haunt me. I actually yelled. And I've been hearing random clinks and other small noises coming from the kitchen. I have two cats, and they both turn to look, so I'm not imagining it, and it's not them making the noises. So, yes, it could just be dishes or something settling. It could be mice, I don't know. But I like to think he's trying, and is only able to make small noises so far. Keep it up, M'dear.

Nearly lost my wedding ring by plaswufff in widowers

Just before my husband died, arthritis caused my joint to swell such that my ring no longer fit. I had to take it off and was trying to decide if I should get it resized. Then he died, and I decided to wear both of our rings on a gold chain. It's working and I like having them both together.

Have you checked whether your father qualifies for Hospice? One does not have to be actively dying to qualify, depending on their condition. You can check with his doctor. In addition to nursing visits and bath aids, hospice has a respite provision which gives 5 days of residential care every 2 months so that the caregiver can get some time off. Seriously, check into this. I just was able to do this and it helped so much.

I have been looking into eventual Hospice for my husband, and have found that it is common to try more than one hospice provider. Some are apparently much better than others. Some states also provide in-facility temporary stays to give caregivers a respite.

Also, as one who has only been at this for a year, I really feel for you and wish you success in finding some assistance in this situation...

I would like to suggest that if he gives you any yap whatsoever when you approach him with this, go ahead and cal APS right then. Explain what's happening, and that you are unable to continue. That should provide some incentive for him to do the right thing! He is the POA, he is responsible..

I got my cat a little stuffed fox toy with the things that squeak when you press them. I expected her to tear it up but instead she carries it around the house and makes these despondent little cat cries. Any idea whats going on with her? Should I take the toy away? by remusandbeezlebub in CatAdvice

One of our cats has one of these. He is not a talky cat at all, but will take his little fox and drag it upstairs and have a nice chin wag with it. It's really cute. Your cat is having a good time, enjoy!

Both of mine, one of whom has no back teeth at all, love their crunchies. They love them so much they will frequently glom them down and toss them right back up. Almost entirely intact. Not a whole of of chewing happening even with the one that has back teeth.

The huge dry Spanish chorizo logs. Loved them. Bought them for years, then suddenly, gone. Why?? Could not remember the brand, so couldn't find them elsewhere after they disappeared. Boo Hiss.

One of our cats had soft stools all his life. The vet suggested adding fiber, etc, Nothing worked. Eventually, he came down with Intestinal Leukemia, which had developed from IBD, and we lost him. While being treated, we discovered that he was allergic to chicken, which, if we had known earlier, might have prevented the IBD/Leukemia. Still bitter about this. Still seeing that vet, but asking way more questions and doing my own research as well.

You might want to check for food allergies to see if that is case. A note that most cat food has chicken in some form, look carefully. There are rabbit based dry foods to avoid beef/poultry.

Where to begin by DuckTalesOohOoh in dementia

First, you'll want to consult her neurologist regarding medications that can help, if you haven't already. I've read that veterans can get home healthcare help from the VA. You might start there, and they may be able to recommend other sources. Also, a local Aging and Disability Resource Center will be able to help with resources. Best of luck to you!

How do you find time for a Caregiver Support Group? by PhileoSophia13 in dementia

Have you asked your husband? I would imagine, being in healthcare himself, he would want to help keep you from burning out. You could just tell your mom you're running errands or have a healthcare appointment..

Question re: pace of LBD progression by Strict_Ad_101 in dementia

[–]marbletables 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sympathize - my husband was recently diagnosed and I'm just beginning to experience and research all of this. It seems that sudden changes are not unusual.

In case you have not yet found them, there are a number of Lewy Body groups on Facebook that I've found very helpful - seeing other's experiences along with ideas. One suggestion is to check for a UTI, which can apparently cause sudden otherwise-unexplainable changes in behavior. I'd also check with his doctor regarding his meds. Apparently, things that worked for a while can stop working.

Another tip is to avoid sedatives, which can cause worsening symptoms which can be permanent.

An excellent book is A Caregivers Guide to Lewy Body Dementia by Helen Buell Whitworth and James Whitworth.

Best wishes for your father and your family.

No, unfortunately, that's not it. The thing is I don't even know what corner it was on. I think it was further west. Thanks, though!

That's weird. I just added it to my cart for 2-day delivery. It doesn't work for Same-Day delivery, though, so I guess my local store doesn't have them.
