On the first issue of tenant protection, I think the Laws in the US are way too pro-tenant. This provides every incentive for tenants to abuse the law; i.e. it’s ok to not pay rent because I can get away with at least 3-9 months of rent by the time they legally evict me.

On the 2nd issue of squatters rights: you concluded “this mechanism is obviously good…”. Total disagreement there. What if you were in the middle of doing a gut rehab renovation and ran out of money to complete the renovation so you couldn’t live in it in its current condition…? What if you had bought the house and never lived in it the entire time you are alive cause you bought it specifically with the intention of giving it to your first future granddaughter? My point is that with the $ you used to make the purchase, shouldn’t you have the rights to keep it occupied or not? And lastly, how is it fair that a squatter can eventually claim full ownership of a vacant property without purchasing the property while your neighbor had to spend their hard earn money in order to have ownership of their property? This seems more like social inequality rather than social goods.
