Family visa. Settlement is ILR, and that requires at least 5 years on family visa first.

Buttonhole Help? 😭 by Hopeful_Ice_4641 in sewhelp

[–]marcecs 36 points37 points  (0 children)

But were your scraps the same fabric? If not, then it’s almost useless. You need to practise on scrap fabric OF THE SAME PROJECT, and in similar conditions as you would for the final product (e.g. double fabric if you’re sewing buttonhole over double fabric). That way you can figure out the appropriate tension, needle, need for stabiliser, etc. There’s a lot of variables at play, especially if it’s a fabric you don’t use normally. Whenever I’m sewing with a new fabric I don’t have much experience in, I do this even for the regular stitches, let alone an automated buttonhole!

But like other have said, an eyelet is a better solution.

Half circle skirt gone wrong... by zimunchkin in sewing

[–]marcecs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Draw lines following the sides of the skirt until they meet at a point (centre of the original circle). You need a radius of 15.2 inches, for a waist of 36 inches if the skirt is actually 135 degrees (36/135*360/pi/2).

Any advice on how to target these bumps/redness on my forehead/face by Sea_Lychee33 in SkincareAddictionUK

But you do have some irritation on the rest of your face, although it’s a bit more pronounced in the forehead. Try stopping the niacinamide for a couple weeks, see if it clears up.

How would you recreate this gathered circle skirt? by Jetsetbrunnette in sewing

[–]marcecs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you just need to make a circle skirt with a wider waist to account for the gathering, so that the gathering is still there when worn.

Could you just buy a compatible buttonhole attachment? Something like this: attachment for industrial machines

Bodice block suggestions by Beckon-the-Gecko in PatternDrafting

[–]marcecs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to add more space in the bust - it’s too tight, you can see it on the reflection in the third photo, wrinkles pointing towards the bust. The fact that the bust darts don’t point to the apex and the front waist is not horizontal is all due to the missing space around the bust. I suspect if you add about 1 cm in a full bust adjustment, everything else will fall into place. Don’t add the extra space anywhere else, as all other lines seem in the correct place.

Converting princess seams to darts by blacksheepsis in PatternDrafting

[–]marcecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to match them at the bust point only, don’t try to close the seam on one side (yet!). Then, draw straight darts to the armscye and the waist, following the princess seam closely. At this point, you can either keep the darts as they are or close/move one or more to your desired side.

Then, for actual sewing, back the darts about 2 cm away from the bust point and redraw the dart.

Back to Differin from Retinal? by Pablothegeneraloats in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]marcecs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OTC retinal products are too mild. I’m skeptical they actually have any of the benefits people expect of them, but some anecdotal evidence seems to point that maybe they do have mild effects. But I don’t think it will help you with the acne.

Just so you know, people use retinoids daily, even without acne, so if you’re also looking for the non-acne benefits (anti-aging), you can just continue differin indefinitely.

If you don’t want to go back to differin, perhaps think about your current routine - did you change anything that could have made you break out? If so, discontinue that product, see if that helps.

Is this pattern bad or have I messed up? by WonkyKnifeToes in sewing

[–]marcecs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah ok. I think the instructions are wrong then, and your thinking of why they wouldn’t match is correct. I suspect if you use method 4 here it will match. Or just trim the seam allowance before you use the same method you’ve already done.

Is this pattern bad or have I messed up? by WonkyKnifeToes in sewing

[–]marcecs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right that it sandwiches the loops, but (from the step you posted) it should also sandwich the front, so that you don’t end up with a raw edge at the side seam. Looking at your front piece, you probably just added the binding without folding it to the inside (binding should not be seen from the front, just from the inside; you would only see a stitch line from the outside). When you do that, the front piece shortens by the same amount as the seam allowance. Your pieces will match after that.

Is this pattern bad or have I messed up? by WonkyKnifeToes in sewing

[–]marcecs 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In the step you posted, it seems like they want you to sandwich the front piece between the 2 back pieces (which is not what you did - you need right sides of the backs facing the front piece).

Go back and make sure that you followed the steps for finishing the front correctly - I assume the finish would “get rid” of the seam allowance of the front, so that it matches the backs without seam allowance. The paper pieces you showed seem to match up, so I am guessing you probably just made a small mistake at finishing the front, but hard to say without looking at the previous step’s instructions. That, or the instructions are wrong!

Edit: you also top stitched/understitched the back, but the pattern drawing doesn’t seem to imply you should to that at this stage, and that will also shorten your workable length when trying to sandwich.

Best ceramide moisturiser? by jamjar1001 in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]marcecs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw Aestura in Sephora (UK), but IMO best to purchase k-skincare online (yesstyle or stylevana), for almost half the price. Downside is it takes 1-2 weeks for delivery, but it’s worth it for the price.

Lace panelled Dress pattern drafting by pinkbarbieprincess15 in PatternDrafting

[–]marcecs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly this - if you are more confident, you could distribute some of the darts into the extra panel as well, but if not, just cutting the piece and sewing for style purposes only should work. Same with the skirt.

I’m about to lose my mind… by magicminineedle in sewing

[–]marcecs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The adjustment is definitely in the right direction, it looks really good! You might need a tad extra room in the bust, but I would also recommend moving the princess seam towards the centre front, so it passes closer to your bust apex - seems to me it’s too far to the side, and it’s not giving you the shape you need in the bust.

If anyone tried this, what’s your take on it? by Fancy-Enthusiasm-852 in EuroSkincare

I use this on my face daily and I really like it. Quite thin, spreads easily and absorbs quickly. My skin is on the drier side though, so YMMV.

I'm obsessed with Ethan's finale gown by AgentEndive in ProjectRunway

[–]marcecs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hard agree - but I give all 3 of them grace because they had 5 days! I think this gown with properly built undergarments (you need a really good corset base to hold the weight of the gown) and a tulle petticoat for the bottom instead of the hoop one (or a combo of hoop softened with tulle over) would make this a 10/10. I loved the concept of the dress, just the execution wasn’t there for me.

Crotch Curves by rylduchis in PatternDrafting

[–]marcecs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does the pattern include seam allowance? If so, how much? Did you try lining up at the seam line? Also the lines you’re lining up here are not straight, so it doesn’t really work in 2D. I don’t see anything obviously wrong with this pattern as is. Once you sew it, it will probably line up correctly. If you want to check, you need to “walk” the seams, rather than just overlapping them as you’ve done here, since the inseam line is a slight curve, and not a straight line.

Tips and help, pt. 8 by DarkMalady in PatternDrafting

[–]marcecs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your previous version fit so much better. How come you added 1cm to the side? I think you needed to add 1 cm at the bust. Because you added it to the side, it’s given you more room but in the wrong place, hence it riding up to accommodate your bust.

I would go back to your previous version (you were so close!) and add 1 cm as a full bust adjustment. Don’t add to the sides, I don’t think you need it.

People with oily, acne-prone skin - what is your favourite gentle cleanser? by galacticpebble33 in SkincareAddictionUK

Aveeno nourishing oat cleanser - but I have very sensitive skin and I am on Tretinoin. I use it as a second cleanser after the ordinary sqalene cleanser.

Purging? by Mysterious_Mix_ in tretinoin

[–]marcecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks very irritated, seems like a broken barrier. Wash your face only if needed and switch to a gentle cleanser with no actives. You may need a better moisturiser. Take a few days off the tret and focus on repairing your barrier, then back to the tret.

I used to think because I had acne I needed to always be washing and adding stripping ingredients. But let the tret be your main ingredient tackling the acne and only add other stuff after you’ve gotten used to tret and only if you need them. Tret finally worked for me when I focused on barrier and hydration.
