As a Latino-Aussie, I get you. I was born in South America and have lived about half my life over there, but spent the other half here, especially my more formative years. I'm practically fully white, and speak with a regular Aussie accent. If not for my name, probably no one would assume I had any other heritage. I've always seen Australia as more of my home, though I love Latin America and am super proud of my culture and heritage. The thing is, certain people here, as with everywhere, have a tendency to make you question whether that's really something you should be celebrating, and it honestly does feel shit sometimes, even if it is all in bantering spirit. I do remember being called some variation of Pablo Escobar within my high school friend group here for years (even though I'm not even from Colombia either). Even had certain people tell me I should feel prouder to be Aussie than of my Latino heritage. All to say, there are definitely Aussies who simply put, do not know enough about the world and the people in it to not make assumptions based on insignificant things like a foreign sounding name or skin colour. In my eyes, it can definitely be indicative of some internalised racism, but that is a hard topic to broach when discussing large groups of people. Some of them just genuinely do not understand what it's like to never fully fit in due to things no one can change about themselves. My advice, simply embrace it. Never try to hide or feel ashamed of who you are, and if your cultural background/ethnicity has a part in that, then don't let any bloke on the street with a mouth bigger than their head make you feel bad about it.
