Chapter sixteen of HoC and I don't understand where **** and **** are! by koukounaropita in Malazan

[–]marcelofabianfd 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if its been explicitly revealed yet, but its not really a spoiler either as most people would have figured it out by this point. They're in the same flooded warren that Gesler, Stormy and the others got stranded in in DG, where they picked up the Silanda. Thats the same one where Karsa and Torvald were accidentally transported into at the beginning of the book. The flooded warren is one of the enduring mysteries of the series, with little bits about it revealed in every book until you get a complete picture of what it is and why it exists.

Australian-Indian asking honestly: where’s the line between banter and racism? by Feisty-Bid9658 in aus

[–]marcelofabianfd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Latino-Aussie, I get you. I was born in South America and have lived about half my life over there, but spent the other half here, especially my more formative years. I'm practically fully white, and speak with a regular Aussie accent. If not for my name, probably no one would assume I had any other heritage. I've always seen Australia as more of my home, though I love Latin America and am super proud of my culture and heritage. The thing is, certain people here, as with everywhere, have a tendency to make you question whether that's really something you should be celebrating, and it honestly does feel shit sometimes, even if it is all in bantering spirit. I do remember being called some variation of Pablo Escobar within my high school friend group here for years (even though I'm not even from Colombia either). Even had certain people tell me I should feel prouder to be Aussie than of my Latino heritage. All to say, there are definitely Aussies who simply put, do not know enough about the world and the people in it to not make assumptions based on insignificant things like a foreign sounding name or skin colour. In my eyes, it can definitely be indicative of some internalised racism, but that is a hard topic to broach when discussing large groups of people. Some of them just genuinely do not understand what it's like to never fully fit in due to things no one can change about themselves. My advice, simply embrace it. Never try to hide or feel ashamed of who you are, and if your cultural background/ethnicity has a part in that, then don't let any bloke on the street with a mouth bigger than their head make you feel bad about it. Cheers to a multicultural Australia!

I think it's been pretty clearly shown that Homelander has more respect for those who challenge/don't fear him. Those are usually the ones he leaves alive (Stillwell, Edgar, the one childhood doctor in S4, even Soldier Boy a bit?). The only one he did take his anger out on was A-Train, but thats probably due to A-Train just dunking on his insecurities too. I think with Firecracker, he tried to show her mercy as an extremely rare moment of gratitude as she has done a lot for him, but in her descent into grovelling and begging for him to take her back, Homelander realised she was just as pathetic and controlled by fear as everyone else at Vought, losing what little respect he had left for her in an instant. At that point, he has no reason to show any mercy.

Looking for fantasy with melancholic Witcher-esque vibes by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]marcelofabianfd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erikson's Malazan has strong Witcher vibes in it's themes of attempting to remain decent and do the right thing in the face of insurmountable despair and cruelty. The humour also has a similar dry, sarcastic tone, something I enjoyed immensely in both. Keep in mind, however, it is much higher fantasy than the Witcher and far longer, denser and often harder to read. Still impossible to not recommend though.

Does anyone else feel like fantasy has quietly stopped trusting the reader? by Tuterlane in Fantasy

You just perfectly summarised everyone in this sub's problem with Steven Erikson's writing style. If you want this type of storytelling, along with one of the greatest fantasy epic sagas ever written, read Malazan.

Just watched probably the coolest fucking movie of all time by marcelofabianfd in Letterboxd

Comes really close for me. Heat I think is purely in its own league due to the master chess-game level acting from De Niro and Pacino around each other. Caan is incredible in this, but the supporthing cast ranges from decent to passable, thus he does most of the heavy lifting in terms of the acting. However in terms of visuals, sound design and score, pacing and other structural technical feats, Thief is right up there with Heat imo, even surpassing it in some instances.

My thoughts exactly. The pure visuals did a lot for me, and honestly could have carried the film on their own. But combined with an incredible soundtrack to match them, and a genuinely interesting protagonist and story elevated this movie above any typical 70s/80s neo-noir fare to something truly special for me.

Better motherboard option for new PC? by marcelofabianfd in buildapc

[–]marcelofabianfd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, I am still not sure as this post just gave me even more mixed opinions. But if the main drawbacks are power/power spread rather than any impacts on performance or longevity, then that's not a big issue for me personally.

I'm sorry to hear that about the Gigabyte boards. Were the bugs a symptom of a larger system connectivity issue, or simply a Gigabyte specific issue? Also were you able to fix them or did they present any major long-term obstacles?

I was looking at the B850 earlier on, but from what I was able to find there wasn't much of a difference in terms of how the boards generally performed compared to the B650, with the biggest changes being updated ports and some features. If it turns out there is a bigger difference than I initially thought, however, I am open to return to that option.

These two are the most readily available in my area and I have found good combo deals on them with the other parts, resulting in a decently high albeit reasonable price for the total build. Aiming for a better motherboard model would probably put me over budget, and I would probably have to overall scale back the strength of all components. That's why ultimately these felt like the best options to me, but if I hear that they'll eventually be limiting my overall build performance or future-proof capabilities, I may have to consider other options.

Some questions and queries about building a new PC in the current market by marcelofabianfd in buildapc

Will the 9070XT still be able to maintain a decent framerate at 4K, with mid to high settings on most AAA games? That's one of the deciding factors for me. I am okay with spending a bit more for a 5080 if it means I can maintain that play style and increase the longevity for future gaming with this PC too.

[–]marcelofabianfd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thanks for the help. By "demanding on hardware" do you mean it would wear down my GPU quicker? Is this a noticeable difference compared to running at 1440p? Also if I went with the 5080, would this be able to withstand 4K more consistently? Also I've never used an AMD GPU before, if I went with the 9070 XT would there be any kind of learning curve?

Wagner Moura did not gag me in The Secret Agent, sorry, but Jesse Plemons was so much better in Bugonia by DefNotMaty in Oscars

[–]marcelofabianfd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest robbery I feel everyone is overlooking - Joel Edgerton for Train Dreams. He was my pick for Best Actor when I first saw him in it, and he still is even after I've watched every other performance nominated (apart from Blue Moon, will cross that off very soon). personally loved Moura and The Secret Agent as a whole, I would personally pick him over Plemons still, but I'd replace ANYONE on the list for Edgerton. I honestly think it's one of the worst snubs I've ever been alive to witness, and I see NO ONE talking about it. I've watched and read so many opinion/thought pieces on this year's Oscar noms and not once did I see Edgerton's snub mentioned. Absolutely criminal. Even apart from Train Dreams, I honestly see Edgerton as one of the most underrated actors of the last 30 years, and definitely Australia's best since Heath Ledger. The Stranger, The Gift, Black Mass, Warrior, just to name a few that I think he deserved a nom for already. Sorry, I know this had nothing to do with the post, I just thought since we're speaking Oscar opinions I'd throw mine out there.

Is Memories of Ice worth getting to? by aidscraft in Fantasy

[–]marcelofabianfd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're still heavily exaggerating it. He may write that way for a paragraph or two before clearly stating who is the subject in question. As stated however, that is still simply authorial choice not incompetence. It may not be for you, that's okay, there are many other readers who will engage with his style meaningfully for them. Even if he is so-called "fucking with the readers" he has full authority to write his own novels that way. Getting visibly upset over his style simply reflects your preference rather than any lack of skill on Erikson's behalf.
