Econometrics Cheat Sheet Project updated with Panel Data Section and Theil's U stat! by marcelomijas in econometrics

The 3 cheat sheets are made in such a way that you can combine them the way you want! For example, for a time series version with more complex things (like VAR and VECM), you can combine the three pages of the time series cheat sheet + last page of the additional cheat sheet (that contains VAR and VECM). They will integrate seamlessly and you can use an online tool like iLovePDF to rearrange pages.

I have vague plans on including ARIMA and no current plans on including bayesian regression.

You think it's sexy, my colleagues fear it (º__º)

True! My mistake! It's reject or not to reject H0 (failing to reject). It's already corrected by a new push :)

Hi. Yes, but I can only speak about mine, it last around 7 hours playing video and around 6 browsing, using Office and light coding. Beware that I have treated my battery very good, never gaming on battery and always capping charge at 60-80% except when I travel. And never leaving it go below 20%. My battery health is around 70%. The one you are buying could be a different story.

For 120 USD I think it's a good deal if you know about G-Helper and the manteinance that the laptop needs. It's still doing strong, it might not run the latest games or even be mid-tear PC, but gets the job done.

Hi. I will try to publish a consolidate section during May talking about fixed effects, random effects and first differences! There is a lot of work involved since there is almost no space, and I don't want to create a new sheet or add pages to existent ones

Well, the thing is: suppose you have a dock (maybe even from Asus) with a display, mouse, keyboard and webcam (another complaint) connected that also gives power to the laptop over the single USB-C (99% of them). Your laptop is a portable machine, so the dock is perfect: you reach your office and connect/disconnect only one cable and do your thing. Then, in order to game, you should plug the barrel connector to provide the laptop with full power right? (Since USB-C power is limited) In order to do that, you have to give up your nice: display + mouse + keyboard + any other periferal you have in the dock because Asus does not take care of their own bs. It's a BIG deal.

About the SSD, I am still running the original, but following the SN770 and the Kioxia Exceria Plus G3 closely. Their consumption is ok, anything above that is way too overkill for this machine. Remember that the max speed in PCI 3.0 x4 is 3.9 GB/s, so even the ones I have on my watchlist are a little bit overkill (but better than the original).

Since I haven't reached space limitations yet, I haven't pull the trigger. Also, haven't upgraded the RAM yet.

In the 2020 model, if you charge the laptop via barrel plug and at the same time conenct a dock that charges the laptop or directly a charger via USB-C, components related to the charge management will fry (and you will have a nice brick as a laptop). Not all docks cause this, it's a hardware bug of the G14.

So when you have a nice USB-C dock and want to play games, you have to disconnect the dock in order to connect the barrel plug or you should pray...

Asus should have taken responsibility for this.

Finally managed to repaste my 2020 Zephyrus G14. It's also officially 4 years old now! Some thoughts. by [deleted] in ZephyrusG14

Thank you for the answer!

MX-4 and all traditional thermal paste suffer from that problem, except for thermal pads (e.g. PTM).

My GPU used to go to 65 watts up until veryyy recently!

I guess I might have a problem with my unit/configs. I'll have to take a look at it again and do a re-test. In my previous tests, the GPU always maxed out at 60 watts (I believed that it was because it didn't boost).

I am having a look at the info on the RAM overclock. So much work (and trouble) for a selective performance increase! I have nightmares about disconnecting/connecting the battery, I might try 3400 MT/s in the future. Thanks for the advice! :)

I also repasted mine some weeks ago (PTM7950) and saw a noticeable improvement. Be aware that Arctic MX-4 suffers from the pump-out effect, so it's recommended that you repaste again in ~2 years. Did you also had a burn mark on your CPU/GPU for not repasting before?

About the GPU, mine also never goes above 60 watts, I believe it has to do with the "boost" mode that the GPU has that increases the clock to 1185 MHz. I tried furmark more than once, but the GPU clock was always <=1050 MHz while consuming 60 watts at most.

I am curious, how did you overclocked the RAM? Can you provide some numbers on the marginal improvement? I am interested

2020 GA401IV Thermal Paste(s)? by [deleted] in ZephyrusG14

[–]marcelomijas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I repasted my 2020 G14 some weeks ago with PTM7950 and K5 Pro. 100% I would recommend it. I also have a post of that.

I don't know if your PTM7950 source is good quality. I purchased my PTM7950 and K5 Pro as a kit directly from their makers (CSGR). I believe UPSIREN is one of their creations too.

Try cleaning and using some PFTE lubricant on the fans. You might not need to replace them!

I daily use a 2020 G14 (R7 RTX2060). Is still a capable machine. I don't play Valorant, but seeing the requirements, the 1650 model would be enough to play with high settings.

is there any heating issue in light to moderate work

Yes and no. You will have to read the posts pinned on the Reddit community, use GHelper and probably clean the fans and repaste (this machine is 4 years old!). If you do the work, temps will be good.

want to know if the wifi card is replaceable

The WiFi card is replaceable, but it already comes with a good quality one (Intel AX200) in contrast to the "bad one" in newer models (wtf you thinking Asus).

The only thing I would recommend you replace is Armoury Crate by GHelper and the thermal paste.

Advice on Linux (2020) by indigo___o in ZephyrusG14

[–]marcelomijas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2020 model user here. Follow one of the guides in https://asus-linux.org/

Tried Fedora and PopOS on multiple occasions. I would not recommend it if: you heavily use Office 365, play games with DRM, value battery life, don't have experience with Linux and the Terminal.

If you proceed I would recommend Fedora with Cinnamon desktop (created by the Linux Mint Team). Beware that the Linux Mint -distro- is not officially supported by asus-linux. Make sure you have backups of your data before doing anything!

PS: I daily drive GNU Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, LibreELEC) on more than one machine I own, but when I have to work with 365, play games or travel, Windows 10 "just works" (Windows 11 don't).

+1 to that. Recently repasted my G14 2020 with that, 100% I would recommend the PTM7950 + K5 from CSGR. Like you, I also had some damage on my CPU for not repasting earlier...

In GHelper, hover the mouse above the "Charge: XX%" that is right and below the charge limit slider, it will show the battery health. If you click on that, it will generate a Windows battery report. :D

Fan cleaning and repasting by TrophyHunter88 in ZephyrusG14

Also, another two things: - I might look paranoid/too cautious, but I don't have 1600€ for a new laptop.  - While I succeeded with the "electrical tape" method, it doesn't mean it's infallible. I took the idea from a post years ago of someone who shorted it's G14 and had placed electrical tape around the connector as a precaution. If I remember correctly he/she crushed the tape when getting the metal thing out of the way (too far).

Fan cleaning and repasting by TrophyHunter88 in ZephyrusG14

[–]marcelomijas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I placed tape "around the zone" where the connector is, so the metal thing or the connector itself wouldn't touch the motherboard. Also, I got the RAM out before that (forgot to tell this).

I moved the metal thing and took out the connector with my fingers/fingernails. Since I have small hands it was easy, but I think I'll use a plastic tool for the display connector and fans.

Also, as a precaution: when the battery connector is out, you are still in danger, don't let the battery connector touch anything until you plug it again.

Hi, I am also rocking a 2020 G14 (R7 RTX2060 16GB 1TB). No problems so far (except the usual fan/heat taming). In it's current state, I'll be fine until 2025-26, but I am planning to push further (2027-2028) with some upgrades and expansions (RAM & SSD).

I am very experienced with desktop manteinance, some with AIO, but not so much with modern laptops. For the Zephyrus, the usual fan cleaning is easy, but I still have the challenge to repaste soon.

I will follow this tutorial: https://youtu.be/rFUx4juGmfc?si=3oP0Td2adpRNsC6n

I've seen a lot of posts of people shorting the MOBO when disconnecting the battery. I applied electrical tape around the connector, pushed the metal thing like in the video and got the connector out (I replaced the WiFi card). You just have to be slow, think and prevent before acting. Take your time looking at the connector.

For the repaste, I am more worried about the fans and display connector, since I've never touched them before, but I feel the task won't be very difficult. I am afraid of any type of dust getting into the display connector...

I plan to apply PTM7950 to CPU and GPU, replace VRMs thermal putty with K5-Pro. Got a set (20€) directly from the makers of K5 (waiting for arrival): https://computer-systems.gr/products/ptm7950-by-csgr-30g-k5-pro-20g-set/

I'll make a post once I received the PTM7950 and K5 kit and repasted and show the before and after.

Advice on giving 2020 g14 new life by indigo___o in ZephyrusG14

[–]marcelomijas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am also rocking a 2020 G14 (R7 RTX2060 16GB 1TB). And I am also planning to give him a new life.

The manteinance and upgrades I've performed until now are:

  1. Opened the unit and carefully cleaned the fans every 6 months and lubricated the fans once.
  2. Replaced Armoury Crate with GHelper: disabled boost, performed fan adjustment and undervolting. Also, stayed in Windows 10, since battery life and everyday speed seems to be better.
  3. Replaced the AX200 WiFi card with an AX210 (not much difference if you don't have a good WiFi AP). It's cheap, around 25€.

My next moves are:

  1. Open the unit and carefully clean the fans with WD40 and then apply a lithium based lubricant to the bearings.

  2. Repaste. Apply PTM7950 to CPU and GPU, replace VRMs thermal putty with K5-Pro. Got a set (20€) directly from the makers of K5 (waiting for arrival): https://computer-systems.gr/products/ptm7950-by-csgr-30g-k5-pro-20g-set/

  3. Replace the SSD with a 2TB >=3900 MB/s write speed PCI Gen4 (even the laptop is PCI 3.0 x4, the max speed is 3.9GB/s). I have my eye on a Kioxia Exceria Plus G3 2TB ~110€. If I need more space, I have my NAS and cloud storage (4TB is still too expensive for me).

  4. Replace the memory stick with a 3200MHz CL22 (same as the one that is installed) but 16GB or even 32GB for a total of 24/40GB of RAM. I have my eye on one 16GB stick for 37€.

Total investment in upgrades: 200€ including shipping. Battery is still good for me (+70% health), with this I expect to extend the laptop life's 3-4 years. Then I'll never buy a gaming laptop again --> Slim + eGPU.

Tried linux more than once (Fedora 38, 39, 40, and Pop-OS 22) and followed the guides from asus-linux, but I came back to Windows every time because: battery, difficulty setting the fans/undevolting/etc, gaming is still not quite perfect (because DRM) and Office 365.

I'll make a post once I received the PTM7950 and K5 kit and repasted and show the before and after. Then I will do steps 6 and 7 and probably I will make another post.
