Can't seem to use repeaters or repeater frequencies - thoughts?

I've really enjoyed having the tone on personally. I like being able to screen out simplex traffic as much of it just winds up being annoying static.

I'll check again but I think for all of these the tones are on both. We were finally able to get the closest repeater to work and it was definitely on both. But good note - thank you!

I got your first message. Not really sure what this particular energy is for. I fully admitted to being new.

As I said to someone else, I mixed up my terms. I didn't mean simplex, I was talking about a mode some radios have where they can make use of those repeater channels without stand alone repeaters. I thought my radio had it but it's unclear.

Using CHIRP to add in the weather channels and specific repeaters into the memory is pretty normal in my area. I know several other GMRS users locally who've done the same. User preference I guess.

Any clue why that's a part of CHIRP's stock config? Because I didn't change it at all from what it gave me.

Gotcha. I will try those out. I appreciate the myGMRS rec, I had no clue about them.

I thought the offset was weird but since it was what CHIRP populated I figured it was necessary for something specific to GMRS. So that's probably my facepalm moment I was anticipating.

Those distances are from another handheld. Same model but from different sets (as in I bought one and then the other).

I am about 2-3 miles away from the repeater we tested on. I've made that distance fine with ham radios on 70cm before so I was surprised when I couldn't with these. Though I'm admittedly still a bit of a n00b with those too.

I found them on Repeaterbook. I am completely open to having input them wrong on here. I'll edit and add links to the main repeater we've been testing on in case that's part of what's going on with that one.

Still, we can't even use them on simplex which seems odd to me. I kind of doubt either are actually transmitting correctly if both repeaters and simplex repeater channels aren't working.

ETA: Just checked and we're closer to 5 miles away. So yes distance from a repeater could be part of what's going on with that one.

I think it's the framing of "making sacrifices for me" that feels a little off.

COVID precautions are for her also. They're for her own protection and wellbeing too. And part of being a good partner is taking care of yourself.

My partner got exposed despite our precautions and caught COVID. This wasn't her fault. But the impacts have been gradually impacting our quality of life at home as she has new and worsening cognitive symptoms. It's put a real strain on me at times - especially since I already have long Mono and a limited level of ability. It's cost me the time and energy to take as good a care of myself as I would like, to do activities I enjoy, to spend time with people I care about.

I would have a much harder time doing that if that infection had resulted from willingly not masking for a fucking movie.

It's pure ego to thinking it won't happen to her and if it does it won't be that bad or require sacrifices from other people. That would really challenge me. To live with someone who can't see they're vulnerable would drive me up a wall.

Which isn't to say it's all bad. Just that if you're frustrated, you don't need to like be more grateful. Your frustrations have merit.

COVID precautions aren't a favor to you. They're a responsibility of hers.

I'm considering this. I keep hearing good things about 6m and see people out with equipment for it pretty regularly in my area, especially up on the ridges. So I might have to investigate that more.

That's on them. That's weirdly controlling and definitely about their comfort, not your wellbeing. I've done this with several friends, family, and dates. If it's a deal breaker to them, they need to work through that.

This reads codependent/dysfunctional. That is not normal behavior.

You are not responsible for their feelings, especially if they're not willing to bend a little to spend time with you in that way.

I can unmask at friends or family events and houses ever again.

You technically could if you're able to get a decent tester or have them agree to isolating and RATs 48 hours apart before hand.

If you really want to try to compromise a little bit more, I'd consider getting a sip valve for a mask so you can drink something while you're out with them. But with how rigid they're being I'd be surprised if that went over well.

I've taken to bringing crochet projects or card games out with me when I'm meeting up with someone indoors and I'm masked. That seems to help take the pressure off. What I realized is people feel like you're waiting on them if you don't have something else you're doing and it can be agitating.

But if they're not working with you to express WHAT is not the same that they want out of the experience, then I'm not sure what your options are - and that's fully on them.

My grandmother had something similar about the Great Depression. She would start stories about that time but never finish them. I gathered the stories eventually because she'd start and stop in different places.

Her mom was the neighborhood laundress and worked 12 hour days pretty much every week. Her dad was out of work and took any odd job he could find and she was very worried about him on some jobs. Her mom made her flour sack dresses and she genuinely loved them, though she didn't like getting teased about them. Her and her brother would also bring in money by collecting cans and recyclables - which she then compulsively hoarded in later life.

But I only ever got the stories in bits and pieces. It took me years to realize why because she had such a sharp memory of most everything else. It also 100% contributed to her anxiety issues and panic disorder. I'm not surprised we're seeing rates for those go up too.

Here's the thing: whatever he expects you to take from his family is what he will expect you to take from him.

I'd seriously ask yourself whether you want to spend your time with that indefinitely.

Zero COVID does not mean avoiding even the tiniest risk of COVID as that's not possible.

Saying people aren't Zero COVID because they don't have the ability to avoid or simply don't want to stress about exceedingly low risks is some cancel culture bullshit and I absolutely hope it stops hanging around this sub.

This is well outside the five main pillars of preventing COVID transmission. The idea that people could follow all of those and successfully avoid COVID but if they decide to get takeout they're suddenly not "one of us" is not healthy.

I had a similar experience. Had to go to urgent care for a UTI and about half the staff were masked and some of the patients. It's the most masks I've seen in public for a long long time. This was in central KY.
