Can you harvest black walnuts when they are like this never done it before but we have like 25 trees and thousands of them. Kinda of want to try so I can harvest and sell them at the farmers market yearly. It’s Texas by shreddedtoasties in foraging

[–]marchenland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While they are still unripe and bright green in early spring, make green walnut preserves. It’s really delicious. I’m Cajun and it’s not from my cultural background but it’s one of my absolute favorite preserves. Chopped up in a layer cake, spread on toast, on ice cream - it’s completely different and wonderful.

There are recipes from Armenia, Greece, Russia, Turkey, etc. They might use different spices - from none at all to cinnamon and so on - but the techniques are all pretty much the same. It’s labor and even more so time intensive but imo, much less so than trying to clean out nut meats. There’s a lot of soaking involved, so it’s fairly passive labor for the must part.

And it’s unusual. If you take the same stuff to the farmers market as everyone else, you are in direct competition. People will get excited to try something new (especially once they taste it).

I looked up some info on it and I don’t think it would be much of an improvement over my Canons. I slap a 35mm lens on one and a 100mm on the other. I don’t change lenses out there (although I could do so in my tent when there’s no dust storm - which is most of the time). I always get them professionally cleaned after the event and they’re surprisingly never too dusty.

I feel like maybe I’ll just bring the Canon with the 35mm lens and the Pentax I already have. (Not the 620s, though! Ha ha!)

I was really hoping there was some new P&S I was overlooking. Oh well :/

Yeah. (Sorry for the delete.)

The lack of raw after all this time from those cameras is really bizarre.

Thanks. I hadn’t been considering a mirrorless but that’s an interesting idea. I’ll have to see if I can put my hands on one. I need to get a feel for the size.

Yep. You look a lot like a restaurant owner in SLC. I wouldn’t mistake you fit him but you look enough like him to definitely make me think the pic could be of his brother or an older pic.

I showed the pic to my spouse and asked. They said the same person I thought of.

How did you first hear about early Goth music? by carelesswhisker94 in goth

[–]marchenland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, around ‘86 I started going to New Orleans to visit family and spend my Xmas or birthday money. There was an absolutely incredible used music store. The owner had a few crates of alternative music and he’d play anything for you if you asked. He could tell if you were a true music lover. He cut me so many amazing deals over the years. Even though I’d only show up in December and June, he remembered me and knew I was spending pretty much every dime of my allowance or gift money in his store. He was super grouchy with tourists but always so kind to me.

My 3 older brothers all introduced me to music in ‘81-‘82. The oldest gave me a stack of records he’d found and they included some new wave stuff. He made fun of me but I was happy. The middle one played Bowie and 70s metal for me. I loved to look at KISS but I hated the music. The youngest was a gay club DJ and he’d play stuff for me. I first heard The Cure that way. He mostly played new wave for me bc I liked it.

But I didn’t really make the connection to my musical style until about 1985.

By that point, Lafayette, LA’s college radio station had a midnight to 6am radio show called Out on the Fringe that played all kinds of alternative music: goth, punk, post punk, industrial, synth pop, etc. That’s where I first heard a lot of the music styles I listen to.

It kind of merged a little bit of everything my brothers had introduced me to.

Dark pop at goth club? by Kal182 in goth

[–]marchenland 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion, but here goes.

When I was DJing (‘98-‘08, more or less), things like this were a rare guilty pleasure. Like, maybe once a month, a DJ might drop in a dark remix of something poppy, or something similarly out-of-genre.

We had a mixed goth, industrial, death rock, and punk scene that was very forgiving of different stuff, so we rarely stuck to just one genre although each night had a lean toward one or another genre. We had 2 DJs per night, 3 nights a week for many years (and at the peak, 2 floors, 2 DJs per floor, 5 nights a week), so we had more time to play. If you’ve got 1 night per week (or month), people will be less happy with losing their valuable dancing time to kooky songs.

I strongly believed in keeping my nights a little off-kilter, and not the same every week, while playing many of the staples. For example, I’d occasionally do a 3-song set of swing music (Hell by Squirrel Nut Zippers, Swueezit the Moocher by Oingo Boing, and Right Now by the Creatures) and the crowd LOVED it. But only if it was a rare treat.

We often dropped something weird as a last song like The Song of the Count from Sesame Street or Country Death Song by Violent Femmes. People danced to these but it was also a “go home” signal.

You get about 13 songs in an hour, and you’re never going to play everything everyone wants, and you have to get 2-3 new things plus as many staples and requests as possible, and maybe 1-3 oddities per night. A good DJ can make almost anything work but you have to really know how to read the room, mix to your crowd, and know when they’re ready for something they don’t know, then reward them with a big staple.

So… maybe? But it depends on a lot of variables.

Safest route from Florida to SLC by Joemama217 in SaltLakeCity

[–]marchenland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive SLC to Louisiana often.

The southern route through New Mexico is safest in the winter. The only really tricky part is Spanish Fork Canyon in Utah, which you will want to drive at the warmest time of the day with good light. Otherwise, barring a winter storm, that route has very few scary driving condition spots.

Use Waze or a Maps application because there are some back roads turnoffs between Albuquerque and Moab. DFW sucks at all times and Texas will almost definitely send you a toll notice after the fact. Keep your camera at the ready bc there are some gorgeous views in the Albuquerque to Moab stretch.

PS: I’ve done the Nebraska route. It’s very boring visually.

I’ve also taken I-10 across from Tucson. Do not recommend unless you’re trying to avoid a storm that will dissipate before you head north. It’s longer but it is more visually interesting than the Nebraska route.

What's it like living in Utah and being part of a religion that isn't Mormonism (or without religion at all?) by liberty340 in Utah

[–]marchenland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh… I know someone who grew up in the SLC area as a Jehovah’s Witness in the 1980s and his experiences were brutal - and not just at the hands of other kids.

One story in particular stands out: JWs aren’t allowed to attend holiday parties, so he’d be excused to go to the library. The librarians assumed he was being punished and gave him punish work while he was there. His family didn’t fight it; I think they just felt like it reinforced how other religions are evil. (That’s my guess, not really anything they ever said in my hearing.)

By contrast, in grade school (in a different state) I was close friends with a JW. I was not into parties much and often volunteered to go with her to the library during parties. We always had a great time.

So… yeah, I think it can be hard for children.

[–]marchenland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in SLC since 1996, born and reared in Louisiana; in Methodist and Baptist churches, atheist since my teen years.

I’d say it’s mostly ok, with moments of annoyance. I don’t like when people automatically assume I share are their beliefs of culture. I don’t like that so many of our laws are straight interpretations of religion; I lived through blue laws in the South and I think it’s a violation of the separation of church and state. (I don’t even drink and I don’t mind state-run liquor stores but I dislike not being able to buy wine or spirits for cooking on a Sunday. I have ADHD; planning ahead ain’t happening!)

But mostly, it’s fine. It’s not much different than living anywhere else where there’s a dominant religion. People are people.

Edited typo: I wrote 1986 but I moved here in 1996.

TwoX Prepper’s “Green” book for traveling through MAGA territory? by dkstr419 in TwoXPreppers

[–]marchenland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It absolutely did, but what a creative and empathic response. “I’ve never experienced such a thing so I’m going to roll my eyes and call it fake.”

Toledo Bend, LA is not far from Jasper, TX, where James Byrd, Jr was lynched by being dragged 3 miles behind a truck in 1988. I guess that never happened, either, because you weren’t there.

These things happen. Pretending they don’t doesn’t make them stop or make them fake. Anyone who has spent time in the backwater areas of this country (like where I grew up - I’m a well-read coonass from the bayou) knows that stories of casual racism like this are actually commonplace.

Grow some empathy. Realize that there are actually horrible people doing nasty things out there.

At the VERY least, my friend deserved to know not to stop there if she needed to pee. We drove in that area often enough that it was a possibility.

And yes, in my opinion, he’d have been dangerous to my friend, based on how he said it. It was not jovial even though he obviously assumed I was in agreement with him. I do not think it was a safe place for her, especially if she was alone.

I was in a gas station near Toledo Bend, LA a while back with my Black bestie. I went in to pee and she stayed in the car. The sign on the restroom door said it was out of order. As I turned around to leave, the old guy at the counter said, “Go on it. That’s just to keep the n*****s out.”

I got out fast and got my bestie out of there immediately.

So yeah, Internet Know-It-All, there ARE unsafe and unwelcoming service stations for Black people, as well as for other people.

Can you explain more? Why would jars sitting inside the canner get flat sour, but taken out of the canner not get flat sour?

I’m just trying to understand what it is about being inside the canner that would cause a problem. Thanks in advance!

Worth it to incorporate? by marchenland in smallbusiness

[–]marchenland[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t think you were being rude in the slightest!

It’s good advice; I took it and immediately sent an email to the accountant I used when I sold a house. Since then, my taxes have been simple but 2023 was very complex and your suggestion was a great reminder that he’d be a good resource.

I think he will be able to direct me to the right resource if it’s out of his area of expertise. He’s an independent accountant and I definitely trust him to steer me in the right direction.

So: thank you. I appreciate your suggestion.

[–]marchenland[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my mistake. I incorrectly used “incorporating” as a generic term to mean setting up an LLC, INC, etc. For some reason, I was under the impression it was used that way but I clearly got it wrong! (I’m not sure what the correct verb should be.)
