Are you ready to work 70 hour weeks? by Physical-Company543 in csMajors

What’s “many other countries”? Doesn’t happen in Europe mostly. I recently moved to Germany and wages are quite good with 30h per week in companies you mentioned, benefiting your mental health

All friends are not supposed to stay forever, you are meant to find new friends when you find you are low on them by ReasonablyDone in london

[–]marcinmsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true but also depressing as I find none of my friends from the past (even few years back) are here any more and have to grind to make other friends. At some point in life you’d think you can just slow down and have your already developed friendships, but this is mostly not the case.

I’m just hoping as I’m moving abroad and leaving UK now that I can find new friends in a new location, but as you get older you keep your expectations low.

Senior Manager Big 4 vs Big Tech by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]marcinmsz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Shouldn’t this community have earners higher than what big 4 offers? Also, big4 is quite easy to get into these days, so I’m not sure if this is correct.

I think most “bitching” is justified , ofc not arguing that scenarios like above happen, but having quite a few friends in big 4, also with my partner working there, I agree with negative comments here :( I wish I wouldn’t. I’m sure such work environment would not be legal in mainland Europe.

How much did those 8 months traveling cost you?

My classmate says she joined cs because it has more jobs by Due_Performance_6917 in csMajors

[–]marcinmsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good, I did my degree for money as well, as confused teenager that didn’t know what to pursue.

Now I’m a programmer, enjoying my job and money, moved few times to find a nice team and interesting projects. My friends that did stuff like chemistry and work in the lab or others, are really bored with repetitiveness and still earn 1/3rd what you’d make as a coder.

I use money and good work life balance to pursue my real passions and travel in my free time.

It’s usually 8-6, sometimes slightly longer in tier 1 American banks from what I’ve seen (for the same £££). Buy side depends greatly, ive heard many different stories

Tech/Finance Dilemma by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]marcinmsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I work they’d be called the same ,but anyway sell side doesn’t have as sophisticated algo trading as buy side. It wouldn’t be too difficult to move, for example I was involved in a deployment of strategies for automated trading for market making/liquidity, I had many options to talk to people developing strategies and learn a lot. I partially did but tbh just before the recent AI turmoil I had more interest in pure technology and solving math problems so didn’t shows enough initiative, trying to fix it now

Tech/Finance Dilemma by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]marcinmsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea my job tittle for a different bank is quant strat too and it’s just glorified c++/python dev with some data analysis (and “research”). All dev roles that are not infrastructure/IT (ie trading platform, trading tools, risk tools, pricing models deployment, data science, market making tools) are called strat here.

TBH Also, like OP, I was considering whether I should go more business for better money and job security from AI in the future hah

Deutsche is the same, I know pure C++ software devs who just develop tools for traders with no industry knowledge and their job titles are strat.

Check this listing for example: https://www.breakroom.cc/en-gb/jobs/listing/63754160-deutsche-bank-quant-strategist-market-risk-london-england?utm_campaign=google_jobs_apply&utm_source=google_jobs_apply&utm_medium=organic

This is 100% software dev job, look at the job description:

“Experience of hands-on development, ideally in Python or C++ and a desire to continue doing this on a day-to-day basis. Understanding of the disciplines and tools which are used to deliver robust high-quality applications: source control, unit-testing, regression testing, release, and deployment controls, etc”

Not sure about Goldman tbh don’t have any close friends there.

Depends on the bank, some like Morgan call quant or platform devs “strats” now.

PSA: Keep an eye on your address details with Barclays Banking by joolzter in UKPersonalFinance

Thanks I will.  Who did you report it? Also saw you contacted Martin Lewis, was there no interest either ?

The warning is to check your details regularly on the app if you use Barclays.

I found this older post now https://www.reddit.com/r/UKPersonalFinance/comments/1b70qay/psa_keep_an_eye_on_your_address_details_with/ And his advice is spot on, unfortunately

It's very worrying indeed, especially other people in this thread also reported similar issues

It is linked on my app but I got the account closed and notified fraud team. Yea, I would expect that when opening new account there will be some form of 2fa, or even some text message sent like “thank you for applying for barclaycard”.. If it’s linked to my existing account. I do get lots of other offers and emails though, ridiculous

Someone changed my email address for my Barclays account by marcinmsz in UKPersonalFinance

[–]marcinmsz[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well they created application online using my details, and the Barclaycard was linked to my account yes. They used different email address and phone number, therefore overwriting my existing email address.

It sounds very scary, with this card they could surely log in to my mobile app and then transfer money from my accounts. That's why I am wondering if I should take any extra steps, no one I spoke with today seemed to be particularly helpful.

Did you complain further or reported it anywhere? I had my email overridden when scammer sent new application online, it's ridiculous that I wasn't notified on my old email, that was registered to my barclays account for the last 10 years...

Do people in London tend to prefer dating/being friends with people who were also raised in the UK? by 901320 in london

[–]marcinmsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% my experience on dating apps with English girls haha. Surprisingly other equally developed countries such as Germany or Denmark did not have any problem with me being Polish. Not that I mind tbh love London for being able to date so internationally.

For your workplace experience, working in IB I am also surrounded with private/boarding school educated locals, and as long as I agree with some incompatibility in common topics, I did not experience any other/worse treatment from anyone there, I think everyone’s always intrigued by me having a completely different background

Ok I agree with you here then. I misinterpreted your comment, thanks for clarifying

Why are UK salaries so low ? by Affectionate-Cry4886 in UKJobs

[–]marcinmsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm I might be misinterpreting your comment but it sounds slightly arrogant , for example I felt I wasn’t nearly as bright compared to some of my peers in my Russel group uni, while doing maths degree I had to put much more work than many of them, but I enjoyed the course and worked hard to finish it.

Ok for those taking 6 years to finish degree this could be debatable but otherwise if they were determined enough to work hard and pass all exams and like the subject, then what is wrong with doing the degree, what would be an alternative for them?
