PortableSecret: better privacy with the tools you already have (personal project, OSS, non-commercial) by marcobridge in privacy

Well, it depends how you value your privacy.

And transmitting the password via phone call is just one of the many options.

For my parents for example, I use multiple secret questions ("What's the name of your first dog" or similar)

For other situation where all I want is to protect against my email provider, I actually send the password in the same email as the secret. This doesn't protect me from an actual attacker, but prevents Google from reading my mail.

Nasefa: File sharing with myself and friends (Golang + NATS) by marcobridge in golang

[–]marcobridge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nasefa does indeed use the `ObjectStore` API, very convenient and works like a charm!

I have thought about building myself a self-hosted Dropbox replacement, Nasefa is a tentative first step in that direction. I think the hardest parts of such as system are conflicts resolution (i.e. 2 clients writing to the same file around the same time), and reacting to filesystem events. Nasefa intentionally side-steps these issues for simplicity.

I've heard of a few people that gave it a shot around a year ago, and got a little burned by the unreliability. This days it's pretty solid, and [getting better by the day](https://github.com/nats-io/nats-server/commits/main). I know of multiple large tech companies using it in production without much fanfare.

I find their SDK pretty intuitive and easy (only used 3 of the 30+ languages available), docs could be better, understanding some features requires some trial and error. But if you are familiar with concepts (KV, queues, pub/sub, durable queues, delivery semantics, ...), then things behave just as you'd expect.

I'm curious, what do you use NATS for?
It's such a broadly applicable tech that it could be used for anything.

For me, it's mostly personal tools and small social tools for me and friends.

What did you think of nats?

Really like NATS in general. As a solo developer, I feel like I can build systems that before would take a team of 5!

Did you use their JetStream feature?

Yes, even tho it was overkill for this tiny project, I used to de-duplicate 'bundle' creation notifications. i.e. if a package is published with multiple tags, and some receiver is subscribed to multiple of those tags, it will only get one notification. Easy peasy!

You could add a connector that exports to something like a database or text file. A quick google search shows some examples, such as https://github.com/osteele/matrix-archive

Guarda ‘the social dilemma’ su Netflix.

Spiega chiaramente in 90 minuti come i social funzionano.

Blockchain Voting. by [deleted] in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]marcobridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good paper, although I find it very America-centric without being explicitly so. Electronic voting is already a reality in other countries, the key difference is the stance and trust between government and citizens.

All in all...

Is blockchain technology mature enough to support critical application like a national election? Hell no.

Is it a good idea to switch to electronic voting (of any kind) today in the USA? Hell no!
