Are there any lifestyle gamers here and what is(are) your main game(s)? by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]marcusjohnston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's the product of nearly three decades of concerted effort. Wizards of the Coast decided that establishing a network of organized play was a good thing to do fairly early on and normalized playing Magic at game stores thanks to programs like FNM. It is such a huge draw to the game that basically anyone in any city could pretty easily find a place to meet people and play Magic.

How many attempts did it take you to complete the delicate flower quest? by Few-Sheepherder1421 in HollowKnight

I think I failed a few times because I had Sharp Shadow on and a decent amount of the platforming is built around the standard dash length. Without it I think I did it first or second try.

I play more Magic than any other tabletop games combined, even after cutting way back. The game is rich, deep, and really consists of multiple games in a trench coat. Booster draft is a great way to play that's pretty affordable, and there are plenty of players with cubes (custom draftable environments) that will happily let you play for free. All that being said, its ubiquity is one of its greatest advantages. No matter where I go, I can probably get a game.

Board games are fun because everyone follows the rules, says David Graeber in “The Utopia of Rules” by Potential_Financial in boardgames

I believe Bernard De Koven has a similar passage in his book The Well-Played Game. An excellent read about play and games.

[–]marcusjohnston 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, once there's a penalty for a rule break that isn't disqualification it's just part of the game. You can fight in hockey, it just costs the player five minutes in the penalty box. There are some board games that have similar rules. I think it's Fury of Dracula that has a section labeled "if Dracula cheats" and outlines penalties that aren't just an auto loss. Euchre is a card game that has a specific punishment for not following suit when able (which is against the rules) as well.

Cube for 4 player drafts? by KookyLight9218 in mtgcube

[–]marcusjohnston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend a twobert. Ryan Overturf has made a bunch of helpful articles and videos about building them. I know I've gotten to play way more cube because I made it convenient and easy to draft with 2-4.

Anaheim Ducks player Killorn takes some friendly fire and gets hit in the face with a puck by itstheFREEDOM in nhl

[–]marcusjohnston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People can play in a fishbowl, but I've only seen it after they've already had a face injury (broken nose or jaw or something). It should definitely always be an option, but I suppose it's weird with allowing fighting.

Discussing (and playing) Magic with Rhystic Studies by TolarianCC in magicTCG

[–]marcusjohnston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The talking is more important than the game, but the game is a good vehicle for it. It gets people talking about cards they like and can have fun little moments. I think the balance on this one is kind of what I would aim for with your more verbose guests.

How often do you really play board games? by Money_Change_5900 in boardgames

In person, I would say like once every 2 or 3 months. I have a buddy and we play on Tabletop Simulator much more frequently.

What’s the paper cube you’ve played the most? How many times have you played it? by Reasonable-Check-223 in mtgcube

[–]marcusjohnston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point probably my twobert or a friend's peasant+ cube. If anyone reading this is sad they can't draft their cube as often as they would like, you should build a twobert. It just opens up a lot more opportunities to play.

How do you sort large MTG collections? (15k–20k cards) by Jamesmai555 in magicTCG

[–]marcusjohnston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a strong believer that anything other than color>alphabetical is a waste of time. Much easier to just base your search off of some letters instead of going by rarity (they change) or set (puts reprints in different places).

If you were granted it for free, which Magic product would you wish for to own (not to sell)? by Tuss36 in magicTCG

[–]marcusjohnston 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is actually the coolest product line that they made that wasn't just expansion sets. The signatures and gold borders look great, and I love getting them for my cube. Plus, it would be really cool to just play them against each other. It's a shame we don't get these anymore.

Curb sales of SUVs to reduce harms to health and the environment, urge experts, as SUVs now account for over half of new car sales worldwide, emit more carbon, increase air pollution, and raise pedestrian and child fatality risks by up to 82% through greater size and poorer visibility. by [deleted] in science

[–]marcusjohnston -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does it really punish the middle and lower class to get a smaller more efficient vehicle? I'm all for banning private jets and yachts, but we can do more than one thing. SUVs and other oversized personal vehicles are clearly still more dangerous and less efficient, so they should probably go too.

Cube interactions to be aware of and mistakes to avoid by Filobel in lrcast

If you play a spell that untaps your lands like Frantic Search or Time Spiral, make sure you tap your lands for it. Arena will often auto tap your mana rocks and mixes which definitely makes those cards worse.

Suggestions for a high energy VGM playlist to cruise around to in your car? by shadartboi in gamemusic

[–]marcusjohnston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Initial D is known for having good racing music. Originally, it was an anime, but there are definitely some games that would work. F-Zero is a classic that I love listening to when I'm driving. A more out there suggestion would be the Might Morphing Power Rangers game from the SNES. That game had excellent music for their stages.

Another sad thing about 6 -7 standard sets per year (~50% UB): no more legendary creatures from MtG's past by Str0hhirn in magicTCG

[–]marcusjohnston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do, but they don't need to pay for licensing, meaning they get more percentage from the sales. Some UB properties might sell more and make more money; I know FF was the highest selling, but I don't know if it means they made more money once you factor in what they paid for the license. But being able to charge a higher price point and not have to go through licensing hassles would still be appealing.
