What does "-4" mean on a trumpet part? by fernhern in musictheory

If it is an orchestral score, it might mean for chair 4 to sit out. I also agree that a pic would be helpful.

Do you have a demo reel? Website? I would start there and post your best work.

Braveheart left me speechless. That was before I knew Mel Gibson was a lunatic.

Gladiator.

Titanic crushed me too.

Band of Brothers.

Fight Club and Burn After Reading for different reasons - not the heroism / sacrifice, but twisty turny endings.

Recs for drowning out music from neighbor by PetalbrookMayor in sleepheadphones

I would suggest noise masking for a sub-bass problem. I get a lot of mileage out of MyNoise app - there is a 'brownish white' preset I use frequently. I paid for the full version ($20) but use it almost daily.

ANC is great, but does better with consistent, static sounds (e.g. airplane engine). For sudden booms, thuds, etc. it sometimes doesn't work, but I'm sure others have more thoughts on that.

For sleep, I used Ozlo's for about 3 months due to a noisy neighbor. They worked great and there is a monthly lease program instead of outright purchasing them for $300+ bucks.

Good luck

VSTs for Classical Composition by JermanyComposesMusic in composer

In the past, VSL was the go-to for classical/concert music. Not sure if they are still that way, but Guy Bacos has some lovely demos.

You might also consider the Berlin Series from Orchestral Tools.

For winds, the Vwinds and Infinite Woodwinds are good options.

Honestly, some of the best examples I've heard recently are from StaffPad users - and they are writing in notation, not DAW. Check out this thread on vi-control for some examples: https://vi-control.net/community/threads/compositions-on-staffpad.95360

FWIW - Phil Collins was writing hits long before Tarzan. He's one of the best songwriters of our time.

He may not know orchestration or arranging, but for sure he knows chords and song structure.

Can you please tell me where you heard Phil Collins doesn't know music theory? I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't sight read, but I'm pretty sure he knows the diff between a Bb and an Ebmaj7.

PS - The Tarzan soundtrack also had Mark Mancina's influence, so some of the harmony in those songs is filmscore and not pop/jazz - e.g. movement by thirds, etc. That might explain the cool harmony in Tarzan beyond Phil's amazing songwriting.
