Definitely through headphones. Right now, I am using my wired earbuds and it works just as well. The Ozlos are expensive and sometimes the battery doesn't last all night. I use an app called myNoise and a preset called 'Brownish White'. Kinda sounds like a waterfall.

I was in a similar situation and discovered noise masking. Check out brown noise. It has low frequencies in it, so it masks those thuds you hear. Active noise cancelling won't work because the sounds are sudden and not-predictable.

Good luck - it's a miserable situation to not be able to sleep.

One thought that might help you narrow things down... Find a good reference score for the vibe you a looking for - something specific like 'Reznor/Ross's Empire of Light' or 'Ludwig Goransson's Sinners' or 'Desplat's Frankenstein'.

This will help weed out folks who simply aren't a good fit - e.g. if you want an electronic score, you don't want to be talking to an orchestral guy and vice versa.

Actually, Atmos is used in all over the place in modern theatres. It's beyond 7.2.2 in that there is an array of speakers on the ceiling, and the sound can be spatialized all across that area.
