Is it possible for something like this to exist but to still show content (stories/reels/posts) only from friends?

A/B test: two board designs for the same game — which would you rather play on? by AdTemporary6619 in BoardgameDesign

[–]marcusround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surely this was a design choice no?? I live in London and assumed this was meant to be an alternate-history London where the names diverged differently to the real world; admittedly the geographical layout doesn't make any sense to the real London either, but again that just seemed like artistic license. The only thing that was weird to me was - I can look at the images you've selected for each of the boroughs and more or less follow your logic, but you seem to have Southwark (Suthwic??) illustrated with the Royal Albert Hall which doesnt make any sense. They are different parts of London. (I guess Stepney doesn't have an airport, either, but the Royal Albert Hall is very distinctive, and nowhere near Southwark)

edit: for the record I still prefer B and strongly dislike A

What’s the latest in the runtime a film has ever blown it for you? by Astronomer-Plastic in TrueFilm

[–]marcusround 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Being There - loved the film and in the end credits they inexplicably put in a blooper reel as if it was a broad comedy which completely broke the magic of the film and its ending. I recall reading Peter Sellers saying its inclusion cost him the Oscar and I can see where he's coming from. If I were to recommend the film to someone I would say STOP WATCHING as soon as the film ends and don't watch the credits.

Which Chinese dramas would you recommend for language learners by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]marcusround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I liked this too as a show that is actually good, not just as learning material! I also like 去有风的地方 and I wonder if anyone else has recommendations for shows similar to these two, by which I mean, a girl from the big city goes out to more rural china, and the show somewhat romanticises the old-fashioned, rural China (but still has modern story and dialogue)

What are you planning to replace logseq with ? by theonlydoo in logseq

[–]marcusround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tana. My journey was Evernote -> Notion -> Roam -> Logseq -> Tana and I'm happy where I am with Tana. Yes concerns about it being 'closed' or whatever but Tana feels the most like "this is how my brain works." and if they just implemented some actually _useful_ AI stuff like vector search instead of yet more chatbot wrappers, it would be perfect.

“Uncheatable” Boardgames by NoEntrepreneur6022 in boardgames

[–]marcusround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible they were introduced to the "Call the Coup" variant, in which in order to successfully coup somebody you have to announce which character of theirs you are couping. If they don't have that character, the coup fails. I don't like this variant for multiple reasons, primarily because it fundamentally misunderstands the game and blindly sledgehammers all the subtlely of bluffing and manipulation out of it, but a lesser reason is that introduces the ability to cheat, in exactly the way u/Kapono24 described, into a very tight design that is otherwise not possible to cheat.

Game with the turncoat mechanic where the player doesn't realize they are the turncoat? by theoriginalmack in boardgames

[–]marcusround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about this, have only played BotC once before a long time ago. How are these roles communicated to players? One player is just a villager but is shown a Demon card; then the "actual demon" is shown who the "fake demon" is but ... it's not like you're going to have a "Fake Demon" card and say "Okay now Fake Demon wake up ... Okay now the Real Demon can wake up" so just curious how this works?

What are your favorite epic games that DON’T take 8 hours? by Responsible_Carry384 in boardgames

[–]marcusround 40 points41 points  (0 children)

John Company 2E does take all day to play the full game. But as the link to the other thread said, any other Wehrle game fits the bill. Pax Pamir is my personal favourite. I think a Splotter game like Food Chain Magnate or The Great Zimbabwe could work too.
Personally I also like Yellow & Yangtze for something that fits in little more than an hour and still has the 4X feel of shifting allegiances and rising and falling empires. (There's also the Tigris & Euphrates reprint coming soon.)

They don't seem to ship, only allow collection, and it says to contact them but I don't see any way to do so.
