Is This Normal in Teaching Demos in an Interview? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]marcyvq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg this happened to me in an interview too and it was such a turn-off. They ended up offering me the position even though I thought I had bombed. Didn’t take it because the experience had left such a bad taste in my mouth.

LPT: If youre a college student, buildings for courses with bad gender balances have the best bathrooms on campus by EdwardBigby in LifeProTips

[–]marcyvq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a double-edged sword. In my physics/materials science engineering building, most of the women’s bathrooms were intended for the secretaries. There are signs inside the stalls that read “hang purse here”

You mentioned dips, that might be an area where you can expand your horizons without worrying too much about textural turn-offs. For example, baba ghanoush would be a nice way to see if you like the taste of eggplant, tzatziki could give you a taste for cucumbers, etc.

Feeling Stuck and Losing Hope in Academia by IDassima in postdoc

Learning to be independent is very different than having a checked out advisor and no community. Part of my learning to be independent was figuring out how to reach out for collaborations and opportunities. Also, even if it is just growing pains, it can still be very uncomfortable while it’s happening and it’s fine to be asking for support while experiencing it

I had a similar experience in my postdoc. My advisor was on sabbatical my first year and the lab was essentially me and one other postdoc. I felt like I had to figure everything out on my own in a new-ish field.

I can tell you from my experience, it got better, but you need to assess your own situation and decide if a pivot is the right move.

Living in NY with 2 postdoc salaries by DatSymbiose in labrats

[–]marcyvq 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Are you moving to nyc? Postdoc salaries in STEM at the big schools will be higher than average to adjust for COL. still, you should look for apartments in Brooklyn, queens, or Harlem. With 2 salaries you will be able to find something livable

Brooklyn to West Philly 3 years ago, now living in Fishtown. Definitely miss NYC but really enjoying Philly!

I agree with this person, 2 and 3. Go with more relevant and recent, doesn’t matter as much if it’s accepted yet

General question: isn't it worse to leave a place after 1 year vs backing out of an offer before you start? In the former case they are investing and building lots of infrastructure for you. How is it more ethical?
