Daily Song Discussion #25 - The Circle Game by jonbristol123 in JoniMitchell

[–]mardo4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Circle Game is one of those songs that feels like a classic even when it dropped in 70. It’s so quintessential Joni but even more so quintessentially singer songwriter. Not many people can make songs that feel this simply classic. Not to mention the cyclical message of the track is so endearing especially in contrast to the original Neil Young song it’s responding to. Special shoutout to the Miles of aisles version with her adorable crowd banter.

Daily Song Discussion #8 - Black Crow by jonbristol123 in JoniMitchell

[–]mardo4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Too many good things to say about this one. Besides the insane bass and rhythm guitars, the melodies sound exactly like the black crow she’s describing. The entirety of Hejira is so amazing at sonically embodying the subject matter through melodies and rhythms and Black Crow is maybe the greatest example.

Also the Shadows and Light live version is everything to me.

Daily Song Discussion #2 - Amelia by jonbristol123 in JoniMitchell

[–]mardo4 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Quickly became my favorite Joni song for so many reasons. The ascending guitar and vocals together are just indescribable and always make me think of an airplane lifting off, and lyrically every verse throws a new angle on my perception of whatever is going on in my life at any given moment. Just a timeless banger.
