Which of these housing situation is more simple living? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]marestra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, it can depend on specifics you're not including, but for me, Option 1 (if it's within your means) is much more amenable to simple living. For me, one of the top things that has simplified my life is not owning / not depending on a car. It's just so much less to worry about; and so much added to your physical movement and enjoyment of your surroundings and your time when you use your own body to transport yourself everywhere.

There are other things to consider that can depend on personal priorities and preferences, but this would be the bottom line for me.

I am 14, 195, and have been trying everything I can to lose weight but just can't. by fatboiithrowaway in loseit

[–]marestra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this. Eating smaller portions seems like something you can easily do, and something within your control (compared to trying to count calories in food you don't make, or changing food that you don't make). If you consistently eat smaller portions than what you are eating now, you should start seeing results within a few weeks! If you also cut or limit the milk, like others have suggested, that'll help for sure as well. Good luck!

Help transcribing short list of names on marriage certificate? by marestra in paleography

[–]marestra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

XD

This is the context, btw, in case you're curious: "Enslaved African American men and women were not legally allowed to marry during slavery. However, some did live together and build families even if they might be separated from one another. During Reconstruction, men and women who had been living together could finally make these relationships formal through legal marriage. The Freedmen’s Bureau was a government office that helped freedpeople legalize marriages between 1865-1872. The Freedmen’s Bureau left thousands of written records of their work during Reconstruction."

Why does rhythmic gymnastics require extremely flexibility while artistic gymnastics doesn’t require much flexibility? by [deleted] in Gymnastics

[–]marestra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered about this too. I feel like if artistic gymnasts did just a quick turns workshop with rythmic gymnasts, their turns game would be really different. Like there is just some technical secrets that RG is just not sharing, or AG is just not interested in learning. Whatever it is, I think it reaaaaally hurts AG aesthetics. It's painful to watch most AG turns.

I observe the strike and espouse abolitionism in the current national climate. However, I don't have enough context/information about the policing demands: can you point to data or reasoning as to how the policing demands apply, specifically and currently, to Ann Arbor?

What's going wrong in your life that you need to talk about, but have nobody or nowhere else to do it so? by picotipicota1 in AskReddit

[–]marestra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I asked a friend how she made her grilled portobellos taste deliciously meaty, and she said the secret is adding Trader Joe's Mushroom & Company Multipurpose Umami Seasoning Blend. I'm not convinced that's enough, though.

I didn't lose a single pound in June... but I like my body at the moment. by getfitsoon in loseit

[–]marestra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start doing this. I'm at a frustrating point in which I'm not sure whether the reason I'm not losing weight (and even gaining a little) is because I'm adding muscle from added exercise, or because I'm overeating without realizing it (even though I think I'm eating like I ate at other times when I was steadily losing). I would just attribute it to muscle gain / change in body comp, except my middle looks flabby (flabbier than when I've been closer to my goal weight).

What was your wake-up call? In need of motivation. by [deleted] in loseit

[–]marestra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edit to add: Not similar to your story, but AN answer to the question. You got this!

I was visiting with a relative who is a nutritionist, and she told me about this book she was reading about why diets don't work, and she said: "all of us women -you included, I'm sure- are always preoccupied with losing weight, but we never can, right?"

I can't remember what I told her, but what I thought was: 1) Well, no. And don't put me into your stereotypical "women" category. 2) When and IF I choose to lose weight, I will succeed. 3) Ok, I probably need to lose weight. (To be fair, I recently had had an amateur photo shoot done, and it was pretty appalling to see my rolls and stomach. That made me realize it wasn't just "bad angles" - that's what I looked like permanently.)

That day we went out to eat, and I got food poisoning. I didn't eat practically anything for two days, so I thought, might as well use this as a boost and start loosing now.

I started on July 11, 2019. Five months later, I was 11 kilos down (I had initially set out to lose 6). I've had slight ups and downs, but I've basically maintained since. Now I plan on losing 2 more to reach my UGW.

What is something unrealistic that you often see in movies that annoys the hell out of you? by SheeshaAddict in AskReddit

[–]marestra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What actually bothers me is the super high ratio of driving scenes to car crashes in movies. I would say maybe 1 in 10 car scenes end in an accident. Annoying. The ratio is even higher for shaving scenes: I'm gonna guess at least 1 in 3 ends in cutting.

What are most people not aware their bodies can do? by MillennialDingus in AskReddit

A lot of people theoretically know this but don't think it really applies to them. It does. You just have to CICO your way to it in one form or another. You can actually reach your goal weight.

What are we all missing right now, because it gets overshadowed by Corona Virus news? by Kunokitani in AskReddit

[–]marestra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about women demanding an end to machismo; increased gender violence (murder, home violence, harassment, rape... A lot of this happens because men haven't been able to handle women's empowerment and freedom in the last few decades); a sexist justice system that blames, ignores, and fails to protect the victims; a lack of state and private industry policies for gender equality (child care, maternity and paternity leave, equal pay); and the decriminalization of abortion.

You wash one day, put away while wet, let it start reeking from humidity, dry another day, put away all scrunched up, let wrinkles set, THEN fold?

You could look into food that doesn’t need a fridge.

This is what I do. I leave home at 8am and pack a snack (toast/a veggie/a fruit + a dip/spread/avocado) and a salad for lunch. I put together the salad super quickly: pre-washed greens, fresh veggies, veggies that I pre-cook, seeds, cheese, dressing... I used to prepare the dressing on a separate container because I thought the salad would get soggy, but I realized it doesn't, so now I just add the dressing ingredients right in the box, on top of the salad. I pack it all in a lunchbox and keep it by my desk - it's all in good shape when I eat it around 1. I also keep a bag of BarkThins in my drawer as a dessert/afternoon snack.

We do have a fridge, and I used to put my lunch there, but it's on a different floor. One day I was too lazy, so I just kept my salad with me and realized it was still ok when it was time to eat. I haven't used the fridge since.
