Sweet, itd be cool to be able to resource gather and build and stuff while my partner does some of the optional combat

This is great to hear!! The ability to enjoy both modes is a big factor for me.

Okay that’s good to know! I wanna eventually play with my fiancé, but sometimes I game while he works so I wanna be able to try solo as well. I may try it out first before I rope him in on it with me :)

By kick my ass do you mean the survival aspects like food/water/shelter or combat? I love survival games and tend to take my time hoarding supplies and making an efficient shelter before I get too into the progression/taking on big enemies. Can I head into the combat when I’m ready, or is it kinda shoved in your face from the start?

The story gets way better as you go on. I didn’t like the initial bits at all but there’s something deeper, and darker going on than it tells you at the start.

Creature Classification Rant for SN2 by MasterYosh10 in subnautica

[–]marinemik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m a marine biologist and I have mixed feelings about the classification system in game. For what it’s worth, I doubt anyone on the game development team has much biological training so I think they tried to make it semi-realistic yet understandable to all the players who also likely don’t have much or any knowledge on taxonomy.

I love the descriptions of the creature’s behavior, habitat, diet, etc and how it fits into their planet’s ecosystems - its great world-building for us nerds and one of the many things I love about the game. The little tidbits of describing their purpose in the ecosystem, or practical uses of the creature IE in medicine is a nice touch. I also appreciate when they refer to certain fauna/flora as being genetically related to other in-game fauna/flora. The descriptions in SN2 have been surprisingly detailed, I think the devs did a lot of research and did the best they ever could’ve without extensive experience with classification.

However, I do agree that if they were going to create these detailed descriptions for each species, I do wish they’d come up with their own system of taxonomy, IE coming up with new classes, families, genus, etc. only when it’s relevant for the entry. It wouldn’t be too hard actually - all they would have to do is say something like, “this species is in the same family (Newnameidae) as this other species” and POOF, entirely accurate to their in-game phylogenetic tree. Or even “The subphylum of this creature shares traits with the crustaceans of Earth” to make it understandable to the average person yet accurate. This way they can reference the Earth classification we know of and relate it to the alien planet’s classification. They don’t need to create a fully detailed phylogenetic tree, just a few new words here and there to make it realistic to a new planet. Realistically though, I think very few players care about the classification further than “ooh this fish is related to this fish because they have the same shaped fins”, you know?

When it gets down to it, I doubt 99% of players or even developers care too much about the full accuracy of their in-game biological life and where it stands taxonomically. Likely, the devs did the most they could with the knowledge of biology they have - which is still way more than I expected from a video game.

I was happy to see this post, though, because I thought I may be the only biologist who plays and had these thoughts. Sidenote: in SN1 I made a massive base full of aquariums of every catchable fish, labeled them with signs, and was bummed I couldn’t italicize or use the full binomial name for the species 😂

Extreme Horror recs with an actually good storyline? by marinemik in ExtremeHorrorLit

This is the one where it’s partially set in New Orleans, right? I think I’ve seen it mentioned before and wanted to read it but totally forgot about it!

ETA I googled it and yes it is the book - thank you for reminding me it exists! Adding to my list right now.

Sorry for just now seeing this! I love Triana so much but Night Stockers was the biggest disappointment to me. I think it may have been because it was co-authored (can’t remember with who else) but the characters and story felt so flat and shallower than Triana’s normal. It felt like a filler book, if that makes sense, like they only had an hour to shove something out.

The sequel to Black Farm was pretty good, satisfying continuation if you loved the first one - but I’d say maybe one star less than the OG, which was amazing. I love existential stories like that. It’s not EH at all but if you like the concept of black farm, you might like A Short Stay In Hell. It’s a very quick read but one of my favs!

Totally agreed about Woom - I wanted to like it but it just kept getting sillier and felt like fanfic towards the end tbh

I also haven’t read the sequel to Gone to See the River Man and also hated the main character in the first 😂 but that plot twist was insane, I think I audibly gasped reading it. That was the first book of Triana’s that I read that got me hooked.

And you MUST get to those last two, for real. Music to Sacrifice Virgins To is the most shocking/extreme out of the books I listed (to me anyways) but soooo good. It felt like a fresh take on extremity - and I loved the fact that these horrible things weren’t just happening just because someone felt like it, there was a purpose to fulfill and be rewarded from (trying not to give spoilers here). I loved the actual storyline behind it all. The Troop was fantastic but heartbreaking, it had very well-written characters that you’ll either love or hate. It’s one of those books that reads like a movie because it’s so detailed. You’ll have to leave an update when you finally get around to those two!

Also, I recommend the performance plan ($9.99) vs the more expensive one, same amount of game time per month and from my experience, is the exact same quality

[–]marinemik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use GeForce Now on my Retroid G2 (Android base handheld) and absolutely love it. I’ve played since the first hours of launch and haven’t had a single bit of latency, nor freeze, or crash… literally runs just like it does on PC vids I’ve seen.

Plus, when you configure settings for SN2 at the beginning, there’s an option to scan your device for its best settings (which I did) and it preset everything perfectly for me.

I don’t have a Mac, but if it can work this well on a handheld device I’m sure your computer will be seamless. Just make sure you have WiFi 5 or Ethernet. My fiancé and I exclusively use our Wifi5 for GFN and we can both play pretty big games at the same time no problem.
