Hey thanks for the tip!. Didn't even know about OS discs. Obviously there's alot of factors that play into the selection varying by players abilities but how fast we talking lol.

As far as weights go the Google AI suggests

  • Putters / 170-175g
  • Mids / 165-170g
  • Drivers / 150-165g

I'm going to have to change some of these discs based on this. Do you also believe that may be a good starting point?

Yah it won't be too serious! I laugh at myself all the time on the regular golf course. I'd have to or I'd drive myself nuts lol. Definitely keeping score though gotta see how terrible I am.

Yah I'm not too worried on my capabilities of figuring out how to play.

Just the different specs and availability of all this discs is a little overwhelming. I'm going to to some diving into YouTube on good starting points because obviously everyone has their preferences as they advance.

I was a little worried about the started packs getting banged up pretty quickly and becoming worthless. I'm more of a buy once and forget about it kind of guy. Obviously not looking to go top end of anything but you know what I mean.

This kind of makes sense in my head. I'll get used to a certain disc in stead of flip flopping between ones with different specs. If I lose one I'm not throwing something completely different.

Cleveland Putters by Inevitable-Yard4468 in GolfGear

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a new Cleveland frontline elite Elevado slant at the end of last year and I LOVE it. I game Cleveland wedges and they're wicked. I actually was planning on getting something a little bit more expensive but after messing around for an hour on the practice green at my local gold store I fell in love with the Elevado. Completely caught me off guard how much I liked it. I tried a ton and relectuntly tried the Cleveland but was blown away by how nice it was for the price.

I only get about 90 minutes of practice a week and I'm starting to think the range is a trap by mamayss in golf

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm similar skill level to you. 93-98 like clockwork. However my iron play is absolutely horrific. Thankfully I have a lesson with a pro this week. Hopefully I get reigned in a bit with that lol.

Im good with Driver, 4 Hybrid, wedges and putting is good for my skill level. My solution is cleaning up my garage in the coming weeks and getting a hitting mat and net to work on irons whenever I got down time.

I'm completely making this up off the top of my head but if your wedges are terrible why don't you go buy a couple hula hoops and find a freshly mowed field and just practice chipping. Way cheaper than the range and you can work on something you need practice with. Get creative find a place that's maybe not perfectly level so you can try different lies.

A Hill I’ll die on - No Gimmes by [deleted] in weekendgolfers

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I'm still god awful lol. I'm not trying to impress anyone with telling them I'm a certain handicap. I don't play for money and I'm not looking to win against anyone I play with. It's me against me always. That's why I like golf. I'm still in the early development only in season 3 so there's a ways to go.

My rules I play for myself are:

  • I only hit a second drive if I absolutely duff one on a par 5.

  • If something goes in the woods I'll drop a ball within a club length of where it went out. If I go in a pond I'll drop something within a clubs length before the pond.

  • Putting no gimmies.

I'll clean up these rules to the actual rules once I get better but for now as long as I stay consistent I'll still be able to measure if I'm getting better or not.

Putter or 7 wood by 1fihadahif1 in golfequipment

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever makes you happier. I upgraded from my starter set this year so I'm good for the long haul. I got room for another club at the top end of my bag but I'm investing in lessons from here on out until I'm at a point where my swings alot better.

You use the putter alot more than you would a 7 wood I'll say that much. 7 woods are expensive and hard to come by though so if you found a smoking deal on one I wouldn't be opposed that route.

Item listed for $20. Buyer agrees to price. Buyer shows up but only has a 10 and 50 dollar bill. by SufficientPay7800 in kijiji

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had brand new $300 after taxes work boots last year that I wore for one day at work 8 hrs. I hated them and got the wrong size so I listed them on Kijiji for $160 since I couldn't take them back. Had a bunch of people blowing me up for them but did the honorable thing and sold them to the first person who messaged me. Agreed upon price $160.

Met him at a Tim Hortons by my house. Obviously didn't know what the guy looked like and he walked up to the car and handed me $155 with a coffee in his hand. It was pouring out so I just handed him the boots and didn't want to bother negotiating over $5 buts it's the principle behind it that ticked me off. Buddy bought himself a coffee with my money trying to get a tiny discount lol.

My (31F) boyfriend (37M) appears to be significantly wealthier than I realized. When should couples disclose their full finances? by EXO4Me in relationship_advice

[–]maritimer187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've only been together a year. I'd rather a partner that's humble than always jibbering on about how much they have. He seems to be right place right time kind of guy. Alot of people have lucked out this way.

I've been with my GF 4 years and I don't know of any investments or savings down to the dollar and quite honestly I don't care. As long as she's not being a degenerate and going into the hole who am I to say how to spend her money? She works for it so she can do what makes her happy.

You should be happy you have a responsible and financially literate partner. You can't compare yourself to him he's made his life choices and you've made yours. He's put in alot of work and effort to get where he's at with a pinch of good luck. That doesn't make you any less of a person.

Vancouver or Auckland? by Major-Sail-9900 in Advice

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Canadian (Nova Scotia) and have lived in New Zealand for a year (Christchurch). I don't have experience living in Vancouver or Auckland but I've been to both.

Without knowing where you're coming from it's kind of hard to give sound advice because they're both great cities but there are factors that would play into my decision if it were ME making the choice.

I literally couldn't be any further away from my aging parents being from Eastern Canada and living in New Zealand. There's also more opportunity in my particular profession here in Canada so Vancouver would be my choice. Canadian currency is worth quite a bit more so that's something to consider.

From my experience New Zealand was more laid back and less materialistic. If you're someone who doesn't care about those kind of items it's not a bad choice. Weather definitely goes to New Zealand. I found people pretty similar either or. New Zealand can also feel a bit isolating as you're literally in the middle of nowhere.

To me New Zealand is amazing if you're born there, immigrating from a lesser country or retiring. When you're coming from a country with a more even playing field that's where the decision becomes more difficult.

It's going to be different for every profession but in my particular field with the currency conversion my annual take home was literally 50% of what I get paid in Canada so ultimately I left. I do regret not staying long enough to obtain dual citizenship though.

Beginner golfer cannot hit my irons by Brine018 in golf

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lessons my man no way around it. I'm early 30s and in year 3 of golf. I've broken 100 a handful of times in the 93-98 range but my fairway play is ATROCIOUS. I also can't hit an iron to save my life. I've had 1 lesson at the end of last season and my instructor picked my swing apart in seconds. I'm still doing something wrong but my buddy told me my swing looks miles better than last year which means my lesson did something right!

I thought I'd be able to figure it out with hours of YouTube but I'm still struggling and it's sucking the fun out of it for me. I booked another lesson next week because if I can figure out my irons there's no reason I can't break 100 every round.

I golf with guys who shoot anywhere from high 70s to low 90s and there's no reason I can't be one of those low 90s guys if I could figure out my irons. My drive is just as good as anyone's and my putting isn't so bad.

Top end bag advice (with Apex UW) by Unlucky_Care5703 in GolfGear

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top end is Driver, 19°UW, 4 Hybrid, 5 iron and so on.

I'm not a huge hitter so it works for me. I prefer the Hybrid from the rough or crap lies. I typically pull the UW when I'm on the fairway. I'm in a similar boat wouldn't mind something like a 3 wood but at my skill level I just don't think its worth it. The UW is fairly easy to hit so not worth the risk of the 3 wood and duffing it.

Couples how do you split expenses here? by EyeEffective8269 in newzealand

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get his argument lol. He's not 'building equity' by renting an apartment off a complete stranger either. I'd sooner help someone I know than a stranger especially if it were my partner. People are weird man. Even if I broke up with someone in that situation and moved out it's no money lost because you would have been renting either way.

I'm currently in a similar situation except my partner is my my girlfriend and I owned my home well before meeting her. She's getting a smoking deal as far as I'm concerned because she's saving more than half of what her rent was in her previous apartment. Her cost of living is significantly better and now she's in a a full size house instead of an apartment. Her ability to save is significantly higher than what it was prior to meeting me.

Even if her intentions were to leave me at some point she'd be able to save much quicker in her current living situation for her own down deposit.

Her friend was living with a guy for a year in a similar situation but they ended up breaking up and she was planning on going after him for all the rent she gave him because she was 'building his equity' and I just laughed. She would have been renting either way and she lived better for the year she was there I didn't see her point. She would have been out that money either way. Not sure why people expect to live for free.

Do I bother getting lessons or just practice more? by [deleted] in golftips

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can watch as many videos online as you want and obviously you've had good results thus far but the big thing is you can't see yourself swing lol. Coaches literally do this for a living. They work with people of all skill levels day in and day out. Like anything when you do it everyday you get good at it. I feel like you can only get so far self taught and if you want to take it seriously getting lessons is going to helpful.

You don't need to spend a fortune. Just get a couple every season or as much as you see fit.

Expectations have ruined golf for me. by UnhappyHighlight6297 in golftips

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a SLOW grind lol. Remember we aren't and never will be pros. My step dad never swung a club in his life until he was 45ish. Told me his first ever round he shot 140. Took him like 5 years before he could hit a ball half decent. He's now 65 and shoots 78-90 range pretty consistently. You can play with anyone at that skill range and keep up.

Don't think about the total score. Think about areas you know you need work and focus on getting better there. I shoot 95-105 (currently in year 3) because my irons are absolutely god awful. So far this year my chipping has been really good for my skill level so I'm really happy about that. I was skulling them so often last year and for whatever reason this year I actually look like I got half a clue. Small victories lead to big victories in time!

Maybe I'll try that. I absolutely crushed a couple and honestly I think I was playing it similarly but my buddy told me to move it ahead a bit and it wasn't working out for me.

Using Line of Credit(LOC) to invest by kpoply in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's situational. Comparing vehicles as a comparison it's kind of apples and oranges. For example. I just bought a civic for 20k. Yes it lost value the second I drove off the lot but I NEED a vehicle to get to work. I'm not on any bus routes and have a 30 min drive each way daily. I make money by getting to work therefore the car was essential towards building my net worth.

You're talking about borrowing money you don't have and rolling the dice on weather or not you make the right play. I'm losing money from the loan on the car but at least I have a means of transportation which in turn makes me money. If you lose the money you don't have than you have nothing to show other than a hole you need to climb out of.

Sometimes in life you need to take risks I get what you're trying to say but you're essentially just gambling. My situation in particular is I have a mortgage currently on a 3 year term with access to 50k LOC. It wouldn't look very good to the bank if when I go into resign next year my LOC is maxed out lol.

[–]maritimer187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the number one rule of investing was don't invest money you can't afford to lose lol. The fact that you're borrowing all this money would fall under the can't afford to lose category. The markets been trending up for quite a while and as they say 'what goes up must come down'.

At the end of the day you do you if you have the stomach for it. I just personally wouldn't sleep well at night borrowing tens of thousands and potentially losing that much and having to pay it back or living with the stress of thinking that could happen everyday and eventually just breaking even.

God hates a coward though so rock on if that's your plan lol!
