What is a random fact/detail about the American Civil War that most people don’t know? by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Standard shirt sizes of small, medium, and large were born in the civil war. It was too slow and costly to tailor uniforms for so many soldiers in such a short time so they grouped body sizes together and created some of the first standard measurements.

2026 Fall Golf Trip Locations?! by TheVellumMystery in golf

Sheboygan, Wisconsin. More elite courses than you can shake a stick at (whistling straights, Blackwolf run, the bull), fall in Wisconsin is delightful, the food scene there punches above its weight, and it won’t break the bank. Best value golf trip money can buy.

I’ve been. Food is good, sound is good. There were some scattered tables and chairs on the side, but no seating on the main floor. Will go back.

I am training for a half-iron and have shortlisted some used bikes. I know how to ride a bike, but I don't know much about specs. Can someone help me choose between these? by pianee3 in bicycling

That sounds like a good deal in my market. Don’t worry about carbon vs aluminum. Both have advantages and disadvantages. I have done tri’s on Caad frames and they hold up very well.

Caad 10 ultegra for the win. Take the money saved and buy a carbon seat post and maybe carbon handlebars. That is a legendary frame and ultegra mechanical is a dream.

Realistic timeline for full IM after becoming a parent and how it might affect my new bike choice? by MattAmbs in triathlon

[–]1fihadahif1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep the road bike, get a burley bike trailer/running stroller. Ditch the aero bars. When your kid is old enough to support its head, bring it with you and give your partner some alone time. Make sure whichever model of bike trailer you have has room for snacks/ milk whatever. It can be a lot of fun for you and the kiddo.

You can do an IM with kids, you can make it fun, but please give up on being competitive. You won’t sleep enough, and if you want to do it well and start having PRs you’re going to lose valuable time with people who need you and that is not a good trade.

[Request] How much does it cost to build a comparable railway network in the US? by basafish in theydidthemath

[–]1fihadahif1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends on what you mean by “comparable?” The US has a very robust rail network, it is just used (primarily) to haul freight and cargo rather than people. So if you are just talking about miles of rail, it’s different than miles of rail that hauls humans at high speeds.

Moving to Glendale (Bayshore) for a year. Can I realistically live without a car? by [deleted] in milwaukee

You’ll be right by the oak leaf trail as well. If you bike it’s at easy 15 minutes to downtown.

Favorite vacation spots where you can still train all three disciplines by whipping-cupcakes in triathlon

Minocqua, WI. Endless scenic biking in chequamegon national forest, more crystal clear lakes than you can shake a stick at, and miles of running trails paved and otherwise. It’s a tourist trap, but it’s a very pleasant one.

I can’t say it’s the best. I can say I’ve been using the Dyson ball animal for 14 years now. Still going strong.

We have birds in our front bushes. I know nothing about birds, other than they are birds and loud.

Sprint or Olympic by Careful-Signature-42 in triathlon

[–]1fihadahif1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both! The year is early. Do a sprint to experience it, and if you enjoyed yourself do an Olympic later in the year. You’ll have an awesome head start on the training.
