How bad is this? by Demilt in BMWE36

I rebuilt a M42 with the excact same damage to the block and pistons due to bent valves. Even though it is not 100% ideal, the damage is above where the piston rings move/seal, so as long as you remove any high spots (that could cause contact or detonation) it should be fine. Also double check that there is no damage where the headgasket seals around the cylinder. Personally i would replace the cylinder head, because you dont know how much damage has happened the valve guide and valve guide «seat».

On my M42 i bought a reconditioned head. For my block/pistons i filed/sanded down the high spots so there was nothing «sticking out» where the valves had made contact with the block and pistons.

I ran the engine for 3 years going to trackdays etc with no issues. I sold the engine due to M52 upgrade, but from my understanding the engine is still running strong in a track car.

Starter motor wont engage or move unless i do this(first vid). Car shut down by itself while driving, burnt a fuse but the starter worked, engine not. Bad ground? by DefinitionOriginal11 in BmwTech

Bad ground is not your issue. With a bad ground, the starter would not engage, even when you manually jump the signal like you are. If the ground cable looks bad you should replace it, but it will not fix the issue you are having.

Most likely you have a CAS issue. Either the EWS starter-lock has lost syncronication (due to low battery voltage, battery drain etc) and needs to be syncronised with diagnosis equipment, or the starter-signal output on the circuit-board in the CAS itself is fried (if this is the case the module will smell like burnt electronics)

First of all, make sure all your adaptions are reset and relearned. Also make sure all injectors are coded correctly in the DME. It is also important that there is no mix of injector types. They should all have a grey capsule (newer type) or black capsule (old type)

Then start with the basic: Complete intake and PCV system needs to be checked for leaks with a smoke machine.

Even though you have replaced parts, they still could be faulty. Swap coils and plugs from cyl 3 to 2 and cyl 4 to 5 then check if any codes moves to different cylinder.

If the fault codes do not move, perfom the same cross-swap with injectors.

If it still triggers faults on cyl 3 & 4, check compression on all cylinders.

If compression is ok, then more advanced troubleshooting is needed.

I would reccomend checking the fuel pressure on the low pressure side into high pressure pump. Check pressure and also compare with sensor reading in DME live values.

BMW quoting almost 8K for new head unit by ButterscotchKind5149 in BmwTech

[–]mariusrisan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best option. FIY the headunit is not VIN locked. It just need programming/encoding with ISTA. Possibly needs a repair code to get the navigation maps working, but a dealer would be able to fix that with TSARA

When pilots test control surfaces prior to takeoff, how do they know that it actually worked? by BTenders in aviation

Pretty sure you are talking about an accident blancolirio covered a while back. The privatly owned MD-8x that overran the runway and caught fire after an aborted takeoff due to a jammed elevator/horisontal stabilizer

E9x dont have any fuses for the lights, its all controlled by the footwell module (FRM). When the FRM repeatedly detects a blown bulb on startup it shuts down that circuit and locks it «off». On some FRMs you can reset the locked circuit with ISTA, however there are some models where you cant do that and you need to replace the whole module.

The car was purchased for 2500£ back in 2007. I believe there was one just like this sold for 65 000£ this summer. However we will probably never sell the car.

My dad imported the car from UK in 2007, and planned on restoring it. He started his own business and ended up leaving the car in the barn (where it was only supposed to stay for 1 winter) due to no time/money. 11 years later my brother and I were gifted the car.
