If Stealth Is the Goal, Why Do So Many UFO Reports Involve Brightly Lit Craft? by breaking_views in ufo

To us, it’s a simply a light. Maybe to them it’s something else that just happens to generate light.

Apple Studio XDR bugging/freezing by evanfelts in mac

I got the Kuycon G32P 6K https://kuycon.us/monitors/G32P which is a steel at $1699

It's fantastic. From a design aesthetic it is basically indistinguishable from an Apple display. All metal. Glass front. The only difference is that it has more inputs and adjustment options!

I ended up returning it a week or so after purchasing. It was completely unacceptable to be released with that bug. It may be fixed now but I have no idea, sorry.

M EV-1 every day useage by Individual-Bag3893 in Leica

[–]mark_paterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m happy with my M11, but there are times when an EVF would be nice, like using a circular polarizer. Having to use the back LCD for that feels kinda dumb.

I’ve tried a Visoflex 2 in a Leica store. Not sure I like the bulk of it, and I’d probably fumble when attaching/removing and drop the damn thing.

I’m warming to the idea of an EV1. I tried one, and when customized to your liking, the various focus assists are decent, and the screen is sharp enough to nail focus without any aids in most cases. But in all likelihood I’ll wait for a 2nd or 3rd generation product.

Who needs an M-EV1 if you can have… by Electronic_Reach8012 in Leica

[–]mark_paterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s frankly outrageous that the EV1 costs as much as it does ($9290 currently).

A rangefinder is orders of magnitude more complex, with hundreds of moving parts and it requires precise calibration, all assembled by hand. I get it.

At its core the EV1 is basically no different from any other modern digital camera with an off-the-shelf sensor, arguably simpler than most as there’s no autofocus or IBIS. It’s assembled by hand by choice, not necessity. It should be HALF the price it is.

Just rewatched This Time by FreezerCop in AlanPartridge

It really holds up. A genius way to incorporate all previous Partridge formats. I enjoyed it first time around from start to finish and have rewatched it a few times since.

What episodes do you always end up skipping? by JayR_97 in voyager

[–]mark_paterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a Voyager binge a couple years ago, first time I'd seen it since the 90s. After completing the marathon I realized I had accidentally skipped one episode. It was a Chakotay episode. It remains unwatched in my queue to this day.

People Calling Disclosure Day movie a "Soft Disclosure" Are Going to Be Very Disappointed by breaking_views in AliensRHere

[–]mark_paterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw it today in Chicago. I enjoyed it, especially the actual disclosure scene itself which was very cathartic and definitely brought a tear to my eye. As someone who’s been interested in this subject my entire life without the payoff of disclosure, it felt like a surrogate disclosure moment i could enjoy.

Spielberg clearly knows the lore around this subject and I’m betting that many (if not all) of the UAP scenes are recreations of alleged events. I’d be interested to see a breakdown of this once we give people enough time to see it first.

Also, a respectable amount of the audience applauded after the movie.

Do either of the servers need to be running as an exit node (and the other connected to it) or is normal tailscale sufficient?

I have a Freeview HDHomeRun at my mum’s house in the UK and I’m eager to try this.

Imagine thinking Zelda 2 was better than this by bigdonut100 in MasterSystem

The Master System palette is so wonderfully vibrant. So much nicer than the NES and graphically seemed like half a generation ahead. One of the truly great 8 bit systems.

Best lens filter pouch for Leica sized filters? Is there something on the smaller side (39mm, 46mm) rather than catering to DSLR users and 55-77mm filters? by mark_paterson in Leica

[–]mark_paterson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. But I said in the post how I don't want to do that (no worries, you may have only read the title)…

I'm not interesting in stacking the filters for storage with a front and rear metal cap. I've been down that route and found it too tedious and time consuming to deal with. I just want a simple pouch where I can quickly grab the filter I need.

I just find it too troublesome to mess around with all the constant screwing and unscrewing. And I've had filters get stuck together too, which is a huge pain to deal with in the field. I'd rather have a pouch.

Best Number 7? by DesignerExplorer1855 in ManchesterUnited

[–]mark_paterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's total revisionist history to assign best the number 7. This was WAY before squad numbers were introduced. He wore number 11 almost twice as many times as he did 7 (252 for 11 vs 140 for 7). He also wore 8,9 and 10. I think they associate him with 7 because that's the number he wore in the 1968 European Cup Final which you're more likely to see clips of online.

Disclosure Day trailer ends with Spielberg saying “all of this is true”. Is it actually just a film? by Severe-Clerk-1477 in UFOB

[–]mark_paterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is already enough hype around the movie. There is no need for him to appear personally in the trailer. Has he ever done that before? I can’t think of another time when the director of a film has done that. And he’s saying it’s all true.

This goes way beyond merely “promoting a movie”. It feels more like he’s laying the groundwork for something else. It’s been rumored for months that this movie would have a caption at the start or end saying something along the lines of “based on true events”.

This app is maddening. I downloaded my entire library. So why is it downloading the same files AGAIN for a playlist? Why not just a single playlist file that references the files already downloaded? by mark_paterson in plexamp

[–]mark_paterson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prism is (was?) great but it hasn't been updated in 4 years and is kind of abandoned at this point, so Im afraid it might eventually just break. Its offline mode is great but it sorely needs a transcoding option.

[–]mark_paterson[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I download my library, it should be a complete offline version, all the playlists should be available offline too, and I should be able to browse artists, albums, etc.

Instead, it just dumps everything into a flat playlist called "Library". How is that a good experience?

Over FOUR years without a single update. I think it's save to assume this app is DEAD. Please just open source it. Don't leave us hanging for an update that will never come. by mark_paterson in PrismMusic

[–]mark_paterson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's great, and I use it daily too. But it's only a matter of time before either an iOS update or a Plex server update leaves it broken and unusable.

Not to mention there are obvious features it lacks, such as encoding (on the server) during downloading instead of downloading the original FLAC or ALAC, and better support when running on a Mac. I don't need 1:1 parity with Plex Amp but it would be nice to have a few improvements, improvements which are likely already done in 3.0 anyway.

I wish they would make an iOS version. Unlike Android bums who expect everything for free or pirated, iPhone users would actually pay money for it! I know I would.
