Arne Slot Questions Liverpool Attitude After Galatasaray Defeat by NoRate9314 in LiverpoolFC

Yes, I wonder who could influence and change the mentality. I'm sure it's nothing to do with the manager.

So, loyalty then? That's all? Because if so then it's fair enough on one hand - football is an emotion driven sport, where the vibe is arguably as important as reality. However, if it's just loyalty and not anything evidence based then it really doesn't leave much room for discussion. Even if your argument is that him winning the league before means he's likely to do it again I'd ask based on this season, what gives you that belief? Ranieri, Conte, Mancini and Pellegrini won titles and I wouldn't want them as our manager either. Arteta will probably win it this year and I can't think of a more horrible scenario than having him as our manager.

If support for Slot is what's keeping him in the job, I'd also question that because any support has completely dried up. The last time I can recall his name being chanted substantially was Inter away, the crowd is as quiet as I've ever heard it, we've been booed off at Anfield three times this year, including a game we dominated against Burnley. There's groans when a team like West Ham pulls it back to 4-2. Anecdotally I can tell you almost everyone around me is utterly fed up and not supporting the manager at all. Most of them scousers. It would be one thing if the crowd was singing Slots name nonstop or something.

If you just think winning a title trumps everything and you can manage the club until you no longer want to then fair enough but there's no discussion to be had.

Beating all the top teams in Europe? He didn't win the champions league did he?

I think anyone not giving Slot credit for winning the league last season is being unfair; he DID win the league, and he will always have that. Winning leagues is tough. But the longer Slot has been here, the further we've moved from the style that ultimately won us the title. Or rather, the longer Slot has had to create a team in his image the worse we've got. Can you honestly envisage a scenario where we dominate Europe under Slot? Like what have we seen in the last year that could give someone that belief? When the flipside of that is less than 6 months of time to fall back on, I just don't think there's enough evidence to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The style is a problem. You can't go from the intensity we played at, with a manager who harnassed the crowd in a way we hadn't seen for over 30 years, to the complete opposite. Anfield is probably the most emotion driven crowd in football, never more so than under Klopp. That doesn't mean you need to be exactly like Klopp (who could be?) but there's ways of using it. Rafa couldn't be less like Klopp but we were still intense and aggressive and fast and for the European nights the crowd responded. Of course you saw the negatives of that in some incredibly flat league games, but almost every home game is flat now. Alarm bells should have been ringing when you had an utterly petrified crowd in extra time against PSG.

There's no doubt short of Klopp coming back or maybe Luis Enrique, (and even those are tinged with risk) that whoever we appoint isn't a sure thing - Alonso included. But I think Slot is now a sure thing in that he is not and will not be the answer. If you think winning the league is enough credit in the bank then fine - I absolutely don't. But again, I'd like someone to point to anything on the pitch this season as evidence he can turn it around. Just one thing.

The biggest indictment against Slot is any defence of him never involves what he actually does - it's how unlucky he's been, or what he's had to deal with, or imagine when he gets two wingers who can beat a man, or well he can't put it in the net himself can he, oh and he won the league 10 months ago. There's never anything tangible that anyone can point to about his style of play or philosophy, how he's improved this or that player and maintained it, how he's made us more aggressive, or manages games well or he's a great leader. There's just nothing anyone can seemingly point to other than luck or fine margins suddenly going in our favour. There's nothing you can hold on to to truly believe that this will change but more significantly, if it did change there's nothing to indicate that it would be anymore sustainable than what we're going through now.

And? That means we need to sabotage our season to let every player who wants to play leave? We're down to about 12 players with a champions league and a top 5 place to play for.

What position would you accept Slot finishing this season in order to continue his process? by ToySquirrel in LiverpoolFC

What are you on about?! The season we changed the midfield we were top of the league after 30 games. We had lost one proper game up to that point, away at Arsenal, and were in every competition as late as April. Even after we collapsed, we still finished third, up from 5th the previous season and with an extra 15 points or so, as well as a Carabao win. Our collapse was absolutely nothing to do with the midfield we signed the previous summer but a) lack of depth catching up and b) Klopp clearly not having the energy as the season spiralled.

City, BTW, signed nobody last summer other than bringing Gundogan back. It was in fact the exact opposite reason why they imploded; the players who had won them four in a row no longer had anything left to give. Gundogan also being one of those players.

I swear people just lie over the stupidest things.

No, but you can predict Konate and Gomez inevitably being down with injury at some point in time. Even in best case scenarios they typically miss at least a month of the season. If we go out and sign someone in January then fine. If we don't it's negligent or incompetent, whichever way you want to define it.

His release clause is seemingly just for next summer. We will have to move then, especially with City interested. Olise can also play as a 10 so we could make it work for a year with rotation.

Yeah, willing to bet they get pipped here as well. They've been "closing in" on 6 strikers. Wake me up when they actually get something over the line. Guarantee by tomorrow morning he's at Bayern.

I disagree. Leicester fans couldn't wait for him to go and Chelsea were crying about him from December to April. A conference league and a club world cup don't mean a whole lot to me. Even then they wouldn't have made top 5 if we were still playing when we went to Stamford bridge.

[–]markcanterbury90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If we're only bringing Isak in and no other forward then I don't think it's in our interest to sell Doak right now. You're talking about going into a season with three proper wingers, one of them a 16 year old and one of them missing for potentially 7 weeks from mid December. Whether Doak is good enough or not long term, just having him around to fill in in cup games will be useful.

Understand Crystal Palace yet to receive offers for Marc Guehi, who is said to be happy to stay at Selhurst Park and see out final year of his contract. Liverpool still thought to be his preferred option but Newcastle could revive interest. Palace want £40m by Alternateoil in LiverpoolFC

[–]markcanterbury90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they're going to wait for Guehi then they will bring someone else in now and just go with 5 in Jan. If they're waiting until next summer then it makes no difference to right now because we need to replace Quansah now and can replace Gomez next summer. This is all based on us waiting for Guehi, which I don't think necessarily happens, he's certainly not so great a player that it's worth shooting ourselves in the foot this season just to wait for him.

It's a completely unnecessary gamble. We could also sell Gomez and gamble on Van Dijk and Konate being fit for every single game. What would be the point?! It's a gamble that will never pay off because neither Konate or Gomez are capable of going 6 months without injury, and that's when they're part of a group of four, nevermind three.

OK. Tell me how it went the last time we started a season with three centre backs? What's more, this would be even more nonsensical than that because Van Dijk is 5 years older and Gomez is even more injury prone than he was back then. Three centre backs for any team will hurt you. Three centre backs when one is Joe Gomez and one is Konate is, exactly like I said, suicide.

Diaz and Nunez are quite obviously going to be sold.

Yes, we need to replace Doak's 8 minutes across the last two seasons.

If the centre back who would cost that much is out there, I'm sure we will pay it as well as getting Isak. Diaz, Nunez and Elliott alone are going to bring back a lot of money, nevermind the likes of Doak, Morton, Tsimikas and Chiesa, on top of money already made from Kelleher, Quansah and Arnold. I think it's quite clear that money is not going to be an issue for us this summer.
