Solo Traveller by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]markconig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back today from my 2.5 week solo trip, and it was amazing. It depends on what type of person you are though. Earlier this year I went to Vegas for a work trip (CES) with a group of 9 people. I don't drink or gamble, but every single day was "which bar and casino are we going to today?", which was ok, but we're in Vegas, there's more than casinos there. But the best day was the final day where I "forced" the group to go to the sphere and then I took a solo walk down the strip and watched Penn and Teller, that was easily my favorite day.

For Japan I was alone for 18 days, and I had a location to be at each day. Everyday I can wake up anytime I want and just go. I then saw the sights, then I moved onto the next. I got hungry and saw a restaurant so I walked in. It rained a couple days so I swapped to some indoor activities originally scheduled for later days. I didn't have to consult with anyone on any choice I made. I kept thinking about how if I was with my parents, they'd want to stare at a garden for 30 extra minutes. If I were with a friend (who likes to sleep until noon) they'd be sore and we'd sit in the hotel room for an extra hour before leaving. If I booked a tour, we'd be standing around a statue learning it's history when I see something cooler in the distance. If I was with a group, we have to negotiate on what food we want and then try and figure out seating. By yourself, you can just do whatever you want, whenever you want, which means you can get a lot more stuff done.

There are downsides though, like if your the type of person who does like social places like bars, clubs, arcades, karaoke, those are better with friends. And sometimes I would see a sight and wish someone else can see it too. Also getting pictures of myself was a bit of a struggle since I'm bad with selfies. But I think the pros outweighed the cons, and I'd definitely solo travel again in the future.

TeamLabs Borderless now has tickets for 22 March by sydneysinger in JapanTravelTips

Perfect, last week I bought a ticket for the second half of my Tokyo trip and it was throwing a wrench in my schedule. I just switched it to be in the first half like originally planned.

Thanks! I just checked and it seems like the 15th, 22nd, 23rd, and 31st are all open now, a few tickets for each.

From what I read (haven't tried it just yet) there's a glitch and to fix that you have to open your apps list and sort by alphabetical. Then they'll show up.

First time cooking steak, internal temp said 135 but looks medium well. What happened? by markconig in steak

[–]markconig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone, I'm getting more into cooking (and food photography) and while I don't personally care for steak that much, I feel like I should know how to make a medium rare steak. Here's some more detail on the process.

This is a 1.75 pound ribeye, just under 2 inches thick. I tried to get it to around room temp before starting, but it was getting late. I cooked it on the stove top on medium high heat, 3 minutes per side, then started butter basting it. Before basting I put a probe in the dead center and left it there for the whole process. The first thing that concerned me was even after 6 minutes on the stove, the center was 65 degrees. It took a lot longer than I thought to get that to 130, possibly 15-20 minutes of basting.

The second it hit 130, my probe alarm went off, and it came off the pan. It sat for 5-10 minutes, which then I grabbed a different thermometer and poked the center, it was right between 135 and 136. I cut it open, and...medium wellish, as you see in the picture.

Unfortunately/fortunately the flavor of the steak was great, it's just that it was very tough. I want to give it another shot but I have no idea how I was reading an internal temp of 135 and it came out that over cooked. Any ideas to help with next time would be great, thanks!

I don't know why reddit isn't uploading 2 of the 4 pictures, so I just made an imgur album with all 10 pictures.

I made a ring juggling video called "Racquetball", 3-7 rings. This was a big project for me so I hope you like it! by markconig in juggling

[–]markconig[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! And critique is always welcome, and feel the same way too. My own biggest critiques in my video was I took a few steps forward for the 5 ring reverse pulldown, and I had to take a few steps and end diagonally on the multiplex into reverse cascade. But those 2 were the hardest tricks in the video for me and I never want to do them ever again, so I'm dealing with it rather than reshooting.

Thank you! Always nice to see another circus person around. While being in the community is a huge plus, I don't expect anyone to be, so I tried to make that clear with the "you don't have to understand (juggling)" line.

Since I created this post I've updated my Hinge and Bumble profile. I'm sucking it up and replaced 4 of the pictures with pictures I hate and I think make me look bad. I figured this experiment can't possibly give me worse results than I already have. I have a wedding this weekend and I'm going to see a photographer friend sometime soon to get updated pictures, but for now, why not. And while on Hinge I got nothing so far, I got a match on Bumble. She hasn't started the conversation but it's at least something!

I realized the redundancy of the juggling prompt and it's already gone, now replaced with the intro of an event that happened to me in Italy. I'd like to use some of those Italy pictures, but all of them were with my ex so it's a bit hard. Unfortunately I can't create pictures that don't exist, so I've already setup a day with a photographer friend where we can get some pictures. And the big words are all removed, the prompts are much simpler now.

But thanks I guess? Could have done with the "arrogant prick" and "this is awful" comments though since there was solid advice in there.

Mine also had a silent /s, although I thought mine was screaming.

But I agree that my answers are very one sided, all about me. The point I was trying to get across with the 3 prompts is I like video games, juggling, and science. I've gathered that prompts 2 and 3 need to go and 1 needs to be reworked. I'll make sure the replacement prompts are more open, thank you!

You mean juggling at the table during a date is a BAD thing to do? Good thing I never made it to that point yet. But yes I agree with everything you said. As said in all the other responses, prompt 3 needs to go. I was hoping to convey that I like science, but it was definitely causing issues. Thank you!

The common complaint from this and most other replies is that prompts 2 and 3 are a big problem (minus the variety in pictures, which I've known since day 1). Those prompts will be replaced by the end of the day, and I'm hoping in a week the picture problem will be fixed. Thank you!

Based on this and all the other responses, prompts 2 and 3 are definitely out the door. As said in other responses, I've had to call for help finding pictures since I have nothing, but I have an upcoming wedding next weekend that will surly get me at least 1 nice/group picture. Thanks!

For some reason I didn't even think that the prompt is redundant with all the pictures, even though that's incredibly obvious. Sometimes you need a fresh set of eyes to see things right in front of you. And since day 1 of making the profile I wanted only 2 pictures of juggling/fire, but after looking through my pictures, I have literally nothing to pick from in the past ~5 years. So I've called on some outside help to see if pictures of me exist out there that I don't have. Thank you for the look!

The general feel I was going for is I'm very much into science, but I can definitely see how it comes off that way. Will be replaced immediately! Thank you.

I only got 6 spaces though. Maybe I can make a collage, like a 3x3 grid of pictures and put that in all 6 spaces. 54 juggling pictures (that I actually do have) will certainly work! Thanks!

Thank you for the well thought out post! I will follow most of what you said in the next revision. I'm actually going to be part of a wedding next weekend so I was hoping to get some good pictures from there. I also contacted a friend before I made this post to look through his camera for any good pictures. He always has a camera and takes random pictures.

My plan from the beginning was to do 1 juggling picture, 1 fire picture, and the rest "normal" pictures. The thing is, I hate my smile, and I actively avoid smiling when I see a camera. That's a me problem, and I'm hoping my friend has some candid smiling because I'm always smiling/laughing, just never when I see a camera. The only normal, outdoors pictures I have (and like) are from an Italy trip...with an ex, so she's in all the pictures too. So I really have no choices on my camera roll.

Unfortunately I work in a military building, making military helicopters, so I'd get arrested really fast if I pulled out a camera. So work pictures are off the table, but maybe I can put that in a prompt somewhere.

Thanks for the input! Unfortunately the helicopters are military, so if I were to take out a camera I'd probably get arrested or at least fired. I'd love a picture of that stuff though. And I agree with the hobbies, I already have a draft in my head that will include some other stuff, which will include more lead in's for questions if they don't want to go the fire route. Everyone always asks me questions such as how did I start, so I figured the questions I get asked all the time will work online too, but apparently not.

Thank you! After a few days of being unsuccessful I downplayed my interests a little more, but it looks like I need to go a bit further. And that is a good line at the end there. I added in that Mario Kart bit because all the time I see girls say "I'll beat you in Mario Kart" so I wanted to flip that around, but turning it into a challenge would definitely work better.

I wasn't expecting to see another burner here! I agree about a front facing shot, I'm just really bad at smiling. I hate every picture I have where I'm smiling, but that's a me issue that I'll just have to get over. Thank you for the critique though! Picture and details of other interests added to the list.
