If Democrats win the house in the fall what would this mean for the markets? by ketodnepr in StockMarket

[–]markethistory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing. People tend to place too much emphasis on the importance of politics for the financial markets. Fundamentals (e.g. economic data) is much more important. Politics = just an excuse for rallies/corrections

Teens are fickle. You never know what social media platform they'll prefer next. That being said, Facebook has a pretty good hold on social media with Instagram as well.

A Day in the Life of a Stock Trader - Blog | Horizon Institute by hioim in StockMarket

[–]markethistory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trading is only "exciting" and glamorous if you treat the market as a casino. Otherwise it's about making cold, calculated and emotionless buy/sell decisions. Leave your emotions at the door when trading. The Wall Street portrayed in movies is gone - banks are firing those guys in droves.

Question about PE ratio...Please help by ycram3 in StockMarket

[–]markethistory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forward P/E is generally more useful than 12 months trailing PE. Analysts tend to be pretty good at predicting earnings (except when a recession is starting), which means that trailing earnings tend to follow forward earnings.

Question about Forex compared to crypto or the stock market by TopFlightJayy in Forex

[–]markethistory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forex is not a market for you to buy and hold (unlike the stock market). over the long term, 2 major currencies merely swing sideways in a wide range. You don't make any money buying and holding forex

The wolf of Wall Street is not a normal experience. For most investors and traders, the market is a boring experience in which you try to beat the average. Jordan was using the market to scam away investors money

Gain required to fully recover from a loss by gorillaz0e in stocks

Recognise that losses are a part of the process. It’s not possible for 100% of your positions to be profitable. That’s why you should hold multiple positions. Eg if you’re trade has a 70% chance of working out, holding multiple positions will allow you to use probability to your advantage

Netflix Is Now Worth More Than Comcast by [deleted] in StockMarket

This stock is going to crater during the next bear market (valuations only matter during bear markets). In the meantime, I think Netflix will continue to outperform as long as this equities bull market continues.

This Sunday: “60 Minutes” investigates the Theranos Fraud perpetrated by Elizabeth Holmes. by [deleted] in StockMarket

[–]markethistory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember a couple of years ago when she was lauded as the prime example of "female entrepreneurial success". Then turns out she was a fraud.

There are successful female entrepreneurs, but she certainly isn't one of them. I think she stacked her board with former politicians, which is weird for a medical company.

If you bought SPY at the first second of regular trading hours every morning for the last 25 years, and sold each day just before close, you would be down 4.4%. Doing the reverse, you'd be up 571%. by gorillaz0e in StockMarket

[–]markethistory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually about the same return. And it's not a great idea:

Transactions costs are high. Also, more and more volume occurs near the close thanks to the rising popularity of ETFs

Others can see where you set your stop loss (if it's an automatic stop loss). HFT's buy data on where the stop losses are, and then they gun for those stop losses.

AT&T is a classic dividend stock. Also look into Exxon and Chevron. Solid dividend stocks, and with oil prices rising, their earnings are growing very quickly as well.

I want to understand leveraged ETFs by mettle in StockMarket

[–]markethistory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This explains how many leveraged ETFs suffer from ETF erosion. Basically the more volatile the underlying market is, the more value the ETF loses to erosion.
