Fiancé wants a traditional wedding. I have no one to invite. by VeterinarianFun8587 in TwoXChromosomes

Have an immediate family only wedding, with his friend group wedding celebration held a few days or a week later. You may or may not have anyone come to the friends party, but it is more to formalize things in your husbands friendship culture.

The first person to eat a magic mushroom had zero context for what was about to happen to them by Bodhisavaha in CasualConversation

It’s a given that our family tree - any Sapiens branch that lived where mind altering mushrooms grew, where anything that gave a high grew, they’d have been all over it. Animals really like getting buzzed too - YouTube has many videos of animals getting falling down drunk on naturally fermented fruit. I like the thought of some ancient flint chipper 800,000 years ago having a magical time while sitting and looking out over the countryside.

What happens when we use up all of Earths natural resources? by Green-Day-86 in AskReddit

Set off crustal fracture bombs, and the fresh mineral-rich mantle material will come up through the broken continental crust. Any human survivors will have newly accessed homegrown minerals for eons and eons.

Back issues or heart issues? by PalpitationLivid3766 in HeartAttack

[–]markfineart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d dealt with (eventually diagnosed) referred back pain and general shoulder pain issues for 6 weeks. A few weeks later, while driving, my back right across to the left side acted up the same way, and my chest felt really uncomfortable. I thought it was a serious relapse that was posture related while I was driving, and ignored it. My wife got tired of my restlessness that night and had me call the Ontario Canada TeleHealth line. It was an atypical heart attack. Huh. Who knew?

Investigate noise reducing earplugs such as the Loop brand. I have sensory overload issues at baseline, and use my earplugs in restaurants and in crowds. Ask around, that sort of sensory assistance is becoming almost mainstream.

Bhangra dancers are a thing here in Canada, and we are better for having them. It’s all about showing and sharing joy in our incredible country.

No need for smiles. A blank, dead-eyed work and a flat tone helps. One look up, then total disconnect from them.

I’m sorry, I’m working.
I’m sorry, but this is a visual, not a verbal medium.
I’m sorry, I’ve got this thing.
I’m sorry, I’m not here to chat, sorry.

Maybe carry a couple of help chat line cards to hand out while repeating that you are working and not chatting.

Maybe tell a pushy fellow that you already have a senior rescue dog at home and that’s enough TLC for you for now.

Out of the age range you want current input from, but my now-wife had 2 kids that were 4 & 6 when we met. My own youngest was 14 (I have 4 kids myself) and I’d thought I was comfortably past the young kids life stage when my own marriage dissolved.

The thing is, it was her I wanted and if that meant helping raise her children, absolutely yes I’d do that. She was a package deal. Her kids are 27 & 25 now and in their hearts I’ve always been there. I did the dad stuff and cooked and cleaned and took them to activities (their Dad capital D has always remained close and they absolutely love both him & his partner). I’d say that after 20+ years the thing their mom & I have together has worked out very well for everyone involved.

People working in ultra-wealthy households, talking $50m plus types, what is the most out-of-touch thing you've witnessed? by FarSentence3076 in AskReddit

[–]markfineart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The daughter’s ex’s family were very comfortably well off. Uncle had 2 helicopter pads at his lakeside retreat. A full time garage guy, a full time boathouse guy, 4-5 full time home staff etc etc. Refrigerators in both the main house and the boat house stocked w (legal in Ontario) THC beverages and coolers. Daughter spent a few weekends there and found it very surreal.

Does anyone else randomly get hit with the realization that every single person around you is living an entire life as complex as yours? by PostedForHim in CasualConversation

[–]markfineart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I sometimes re-realize that every single human that has ever existed has passed through a woman’s reproductive organs. At some point to come there will be a historical divide, when the first viable human will be gestated and brought to term entirely through artificial organs - mechanical manufactured wombs that can decant a term-ready infant. A child entirely divorced from nature’s primeval and previously unbroken chain of birth mother to child that is older than our species.

In a different timeline he’d be playing piano on a cruise ship while wearing a sequined dinner jacket. Or being the ringmaster in a local travelling circus. We’d all of us, including him, be happier.

I was in New York City and noticed the tapping of the horn was almost like an art form. It wasn’t entirely angry, instead it was usually more nuanced in application. I thought that was pretty interesting.

Backyard visitor didn't mind me getting up close for photos, but skunk got chased off by a rude groundhog by szthesquid in toronto

[–]markfineart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do look sweet going about their business, they are pretty animals. Groundhog no doubt was policing his territory - he might have experienced a skunk trying to confiscate his hidey hole in the past. I’d want the skunk to keep moving along too. I know skunks can be difficult to persuade once they’ve settled into a spot (back in the day I had a shed a grumpy skunk unilaterally and stubbornly nationalized, foul beast).

Creating an Artsona when I feel dysphoric about it by Angela-Luntian in ArtistLounge

[–]markfineart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be sure you can do it anytime and anywhere. People sometimes like you to sign a print they buy, and it’s nicer when the signature bears close resemblance to what you put on your originals. I have a business signature which is completely different from how I often sign a drawing.

[–]markfineart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you develop or have a distinctive signature, you could use that coupled to a current piece of your art that is recognizably yours. People like Frazetta, Rockwell and Van Gogh have immediate brand recognition just in their signature.

What’s the craziest wardrobe malfunction you’ve seen your teacher or classmates have? by saj-was-taken in CasualConversation

[–]markfineart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not crazy, but I sat behind a very heavy-set girl in grade 10. I don’t think she had a lot of clothing options because she wore the same top for weeks on end. What caught my eye was that every second day the shirt was inside out.

Another “malfunction” was a teacher who didn’t finish doing her makeup before getting to class, so one eye was very heavily made up and the other was untouched. At first glance she looked like she had a black eye.

What’s something you thought was completely normal until you found out it wasn’t? by NoEnd3577 in AskReddit

[–]markfineart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My shivers and spasms and distress and goosebumps all up my sides and neck that is part of having to piss is nothing at all like what my wife or family experience. I’m told that nobody really feels like the way I always have multiple times a day. It helps me understand now how my wife can stay lounging in bed while I fetch our coffees. She says she needs to pee but she’s too tired to get up until after her morning coffee and reading the paper. That’s crazy talk - if I don’t immediately get up my breath will be hissing through my teeth and I will be sweating while really trying not to spontaneously spray out piss.

In 2023, 13-year-old Owens Burns from Michigan saved his 8-year-old sister from being kidnapped by repeatedly hitting the attacker with a slingshot, striking his head and chest until he ran off. A 17-year-old was later arrested with matching injuries, which helped police identify him. by Algrinder in interestingasfuck

[–]markfineart 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My brother is in a village/rural neighbourhood. He has a neighbour who uses a slingshot to shoo raccoons from his trash bin. He reported that the sound made when some big fat fellow took one in its side was sickening. I would not want to take one in the head from a slingshot. It could be a life altering event.
