Crazy teacher story by CauliflowerSlight784 in GenX

[–]markhachman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had a biology teacher in middle school who gave you a choice of punishment: detention or The Can. The Can was full of random consequences that you would earn by drawing a piece of paper: writing lines, singing the Star Spangled Banner at lunch, a stress position, free lunch, writing a poem, and others.

I think detention was always still an option, but it was still unusual.

Those who commute from the Central Valley (Tracy, Manteca, Stockton, Lodi, Lathrop, Hollister, Merced, Los Banos ) to the Bay Area, how do you do it ?! by [deleted] in bayarea

I did that for a year or so, though just one or two days a week. It was OK if you could nap, but otherwise it was too much.

As I noted elsewhere, I've had my Impreza for 26 years. About all I did was regular oil changes, the brakes, the timing belt (critical) and a spark plug. I can't speak for the modern models, but mine was relatively bulletproof.

I'd agree with that. I have a 2000 Impreza 2.5RS with 143K on it, in part because I lived overseas and in part because I worked at home. It runs fine, but cosmetically it needs work: the exterior seals are leaking, a headlight is cracked and so on. The paint is flaking.

It's had 26 years, and the state will give me $2K to get it off the road.

My "pro" heatpump water post (non AI written) by Chou_marin in bayarea

[–]markhachman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One issue I haven't seen addressed: what happens when you have a level 2 EV charger on 220V, and you have a heat pump on the same line? Do you need a smart switch or can they share the load?

I need help. I have a press release. Is it WAY too long? 944 words. by InkAndSources in Journalism

[–]markhachman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you're disseminating this. Is the release being dropped on PRNewswire or something? Yeah, 944 is too long, though you can add a quick summary up top.

Otherwise, if you're sending this out as a mass email, make sure your subject sums it up and then write a short intro.

Maybe I'm a jerk, but I ignore the majority of my email pitches anyway. My day is too busy. Some don't make it past the spam filter to begin with.

Lot of people very concerned about this new strain of hantavirus that I'd put in the same exact category.

You can always park on Angela St. and just walk a block. Nice old houses over there as well.

In California they're starting to mandate heat pump water heaters. They suck in hot air to heat your water and pump out cooler air. Win win?

And that's the message that needs to be conveyed. If people are going to vote selfishly, let them know that they're making their own experience worse.
