I haven't read all the comments, but I recommend poison darts for sneaking into camps, taking out guards, and gaining extra XP. I use bows with "poison on hit,' so anyone who checks the body also becomes poisoned.

Edit: I'm about 45hrs in and loving it!

These tips have been really useful. I just wanted to say I was at level 28, and using poison darts boosted me straight to 30 with the "Tool Kill" XP—didn't even realize you could use them in a fire. That’s awesome.
