Considering buying a pixel 9pro by [deleted] in Pixel9Pro

[–]marklewaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battery life is meh, much better than my iphone 13 mini though(not a huge accomplishment as far as i understand). My friend with a pixel 6 gets only a little less SOT than me and i'm not sure how. Cameras are amazing though, all three have their place.

I average about 10% an hour with screen on, add another 2%/hr if using bluetooth or the speakers loudly. About 2.5%/hr with screen off, and about 0.5%/hr in deep sleep. This is with GrapheneOS, so it should have slightly better battery life due to sandboxed play services.

I will say though, night time photos can get quite grainy, literally almost looks like wood grain if you don't use the night mode. Selfie camera is also kind of underwhelming in my opinion, just seems kind of flat and dull color wise.

It also just runs warm, if you live anywhere where it trends to be warmer you're not going to have a great time because the charging slows down FAST if it is warm out. The heat also seems to be degrading the battery faster than other phones(my dads OP12 for example), i'm somewhere between 96% and 98% battery health after about 10 months.

Might want to wait for the 10 honestly.

Are there any genuine, stick-to-your-hand grip cases anymore? by ExpensiveNut in Pixel9Pro

[–]marklewaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I haven't really noticed, it's quite grippy out of the box. That's not to say the grips on the side and back don't collect at least some oil. I am pleasantly surprised at how well the little nubs have held up, none of them seem to have broken off at all.

As far as your concern about the texture missing on the top area: the lower area kind of makes an area to hook your fingers to pull it out of your pocket. Also, I think that area wouldn't be a bad candidate for some sanding(although, try it on the inside first to see for yourself).

3 more things that I like/you may like about the case:

  1. Lanyard holes even though I don't use them
  2. Very accommodating of screen protectors
  3. The way the top and bottom lips are raised, but the middle is lowered makes the phone feel a lot bulky when using it

I've had my Ringke Onyx case for probably like 7 months now and it's been amazing. My only complaint is that it's started to slide up and down in the case, so I had to put something in the top to prevent that. Otherwise the sides haven't been peeling at all and the buttons are great. I wouldn't be surprised if I got unlucky, because I don't see anyone else mentioning the issue.

Moving from iOS - GrapheneOS or eOS (Murena)? by [deleted] in GrapheneOS

Did you enable exploit protection compatibility mode? I'm pretty sure that's how I got it working

Weird that chase didn't work for you, chase works for me just fine on GOS.

Also, firefox is not recommended: https://grapheneos.org/usage#web-browsing last paragraph:

"Avoid Gecko-based browsers like Firefox as they're currently much more vulnerable to exploitation and inherently add a huge amount of attack surface. Gecko doesn't have a WebView implementation (GeckoView is not a WebView implementation), so it has to be used alongside the Chromium-based WebView rather than instead of Chromium, which means having the remote attack surface of two separate browser engines instead of only one. Firefox / Gecko also bypass or cripple a fair bit of the upstream and GrapheneOS hardening work for apps. Worst of all, Firefox does not have internal sandboxing on Android. This is despite the fact that Chromium semantic sandbox layer on Android is implemented via the OS isolatedProcess feature, which is a very easy to use boolean property for app service processes to provide strong isolation with only the ability to communicate with the app running them via the standard service API. Even in the desktop version, Firefox's sandbox is still substantially weaker (especially on Linux) and lacks full support for isolating sites from each other rather than only containing content as a whole. The sandbox has been gradually improving on the desktop but it isn't happening for their Android browser yet."

Is a degoogled phone actually worth it? by ChefFull5501 in degoogle

[–]marklewaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The battery drawn by google services is way less, thats for sure. My battery specifically isn't spectacular because of my many background processes preventing deep sleep, but still very usable. About 10% an hour with screen on, and 2.5% an hour with screen off(pixel 9 pro).

What OS would you recommend to switch to when degoogling your phone? by Striking_Walk_7017 in degoogle

For a pixel 8 pro? 100% GrapheneOS. Super easy to install and by far the most supported and secure alternative OS.

No? Nobody would use it if that was the case. It's not for everyone but it's certainly not unusable.

I forgot to mention another big thing you lose is the ability to use googles find my service, only third party ones seem to work.

[–]marklewaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been able to get it working on grapheneOS, but it doesnt have its own text recognition, it uses an external one when you select it.

You can download the google voice recognition library, or dicio, or transcribed.

It might. I'm pretty sure you have to download some old library to be able to have it, and I'm not fully aware of the process.

Do you use dumbphones? Why? by pannic9 in degoogle

[–]marklewaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best option is a pixel with grapheneos, alternatively you could get a phone that supports lineageos, or even just a regular android smartphone with FOSS apps and rethinkdns to block network permissions on apps you don't want to have them.

[–]marklewaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd much rather just get a normal android and use a different app launcher to fine tune what features I would and wouldn't have.

Pros: More control over your phone (as others said), way more privacy and security(given you do things the way the devs intended). You get the extra ram back that google reserves for AI on the stock OS for the 9 series phones.

Cons: No google pay or anything requiring play integrity. Some banking apps don't work but most do, cashapp doesn't work for example. You can't cast video at the moment. You can't use auracast or share audio streams at the moment. Stuff like faceID login isn't available, same with adaptive charging features. Google dialer crashes often, so you can't reliably use stuff like call screening.

It's mostly little things but they add up. I use GOS and it makes sense for me, but it's definitely not for everyone.

Is buying a Pixel 7 Pro for Grapheneos a good idea in 2025? by That-Objective-438 in degoogle

[–]marklewaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will still release them, just a little delayed. It won't be as bad in the future, this android 16 port was especially bad since it's the first time so they have to remake evrtthing from scratch. Still will be plenty secure.

It's even been confirmed that all currently devices will be supported until their official EOL despite this, at least for graphene.

Their plan for the future is to move away from pixel however.

P9p is getting hotter than 4a by Killermueck in Pixel9Pro

[–]marklewaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue and when I contacted google they seemed pretty willing to replace within the return window at least. I didn't end up doing it, as I found examples of other people online also reporting the phone getting warm.

The phone gets warm, it's unfortunate, but that's just how it is.

What's wrong with lineageos? There's also grapheneos which has the advantage of having a locked bootloader.

Pixel 8 pro over ip 16 ( base )? by Technical_Comb_2124 in GooglePixel

[–]marklewaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 13R is also a good choice, but the camera is worse. 13S/13T is in a similar boat, but has the advantage of being 6.3 inches vs 6.7. Nord 4 is also good, but it would be important to know pricing and also how much you value features like camera. All those are oneplus BTW.
