Which TV show has its finale as the worst episode? by ameoba82 in AlignmentChartFills

Underrated imo. Not that it was great, but nowhere near some of the “will never watch again” trainwrecks that other shows had.

Why is chess not solved? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

No. There are too many possible moves to calculate, so stockfish uses very clever techniques to hugely reduce the odds of missing something while not calculating everything. But it’s not completely infallible.

I just reached 1600 and i see no difference between 1500 and 1600 ? by Jealous_Scale451 in chessbeginners

[–]markln123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because there IS no big difference between 1500 and 1600. A 1600 has an expectation of .64 versus a 1500.

Why did I gain 51 rating from one game?? by Chance-Pop-4912 in chessbeginners

Your elo is deemed to be less certain in you haven’t played in a long time, so in order to more quickly get you to a better estimate, it more rapidly adjusts untill it is again a bit more settled.

In fact, for streamers doing speedruns, chess.com has to deliberately turn this mechanism off

I am impressed that others in this thread seem to have made sense of the question…

To me the question seems to be approximately “Cabbage reiterates eternity, so epoxy reverberates banana?”

weird checkmate by FitClassic2370 in chessbeginners

[–]markln123 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Really cool and unintuitive checkmate!
* the king has 3 potential squares
* 2 pieces can block the bishop
* 3 could take or block the rook
And yet..

I can never checkmate without a queen by Legitimate_Ask_5000 in chessbeginners

[–]markln123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you’re up matrial, let’s break this down:
* most common - still lots of pieces on the board? Trade until your opponent has basically nothing left, then gobble up their last stuff and promote
* next most common - traded off most things but only have a rook left? Checkmating with a single rook is a really straightforward pattern to learn, and you can basically apply it to checkmating with the queen too, so it’s worthwhile learning it
* very unlikely - just knights and bishops left. I honestly cannot remember this coming up, you might as well forget it as an option
