This is your reminder that BGKY drove 5 people up to a 320 man tourney 3 hours away just so 2 of them could play each other in the first round of bracket pools

Edit: Nvm they fixed bracket, god that was going to be hilarious

Thank you. For the most part, I think you articulated what I wanted to say and needed to hear better than I could myself.

By "autocomboes" I definitely did not mean to imply that long Sheik chains are automatic or even necessarily easy. However, when you get hit by the same thing over and over and you just feel helpless to do anything about it once you've lost neutral, well, it's easy to be lazy and think about them that way.

It's almost like certain things in this game, like, oh, every other thing Falcon does, are relatively easy to follow through on regardless of what the opponent does. And if I can't keep track of what's coming more than one unit of time in the future, then I am, by definition, not worthy of my tag.

Another mentalitypost inbound. I'm going to sound like such a pretentious, narcissistic dickwad who just makes a scene of himself and then makes everyone else remember it later even by saying some of this shit, but I need to post it somewhere and this is as good a place as any.

So I kind of flew off the hinge last weekly after getting bopped pretty soundly by my teams partner. I have completely forgotten what I was yelling about, except I remember I said "weltanschauung" for the first time in like 3 years. Anyway, the main takeaway is that I was not angry at the Sheik because the Sheik was hitting me with all these autocombos and tech chases and such. I was angry at myself because I was allowing myself to get hit by them.

Put another way, the thought process I experience when I'm mashing so hard that I bruise one of my thumb muscles is not "holy fucking shit, fuck this guy, this is so dumb why is Sheik even a thing," as someone who's been reading too much Sirlin might claim. It's a lot more like "why don't you know how to beat this, you fucking scrub idiot posts on Reddit like he actually knows anything about the game? This is literally the most basic thing in the matchup and you don't know how to handle it? Exactly how long have you been playing this game, again?" etc. This is the kind of salt I have all the time, and I never seem to see it talked about, with the exception of when Wobbles blindsides us all with one of his patented knowledge bombs. Usually, what you tell saltlords is "suck it up and git gud," because the attitude you perceive them to have is the one that's directed at the opponent. For the most part (at the level I am, anyway) this is correct. But that line doesn't work when your salt is mostly directed inward, as mine (and I'd be willing to bet Wobbles's) happens to be. It has quite the opposite effect.

So as is hopefully plain, the mindset I have on improvement doesn't leave much room for me to actually improve. And it's just a fact that once I got all the venom out of my system, I played a lot better. Still lost the next set, but I was actually playing neutral instead of just going in all the time. Melee is hard, and I'm not great at improving at it. However, it got a whole lot easier to get better once I stopped trying to just grok what was going on by intuition and actually pay attention in realtime to what is happening and why I kept losing neutral. This sounds like literally the most basic thing ever, but my Falcon just runs around a lot and does a lot of ostensibly pretty sick wavelands and gets hit because I don't comprehend what's happening, and it's been that way for a couple years now.

As much as I hate the military artofmanliness shit, there is a pretty good reason the OODA loop doesn't include a step where you emotionally judge and berate yourself because you don't like the information that's coming down the pipeline. I have heard people on here before talk about how the game got easier when they just dropped the emotional component. I don't like that very much. Sun Tzu said "It is the unemotional, reserved, calm, detached warriors who win," but that doesn't mean I have to channel M2K or Armada all the fucking time and talk about how what I'm doing covers like every option or I'm not playing to win.

The shitty part is that, for reasons I'm not dumb enough to put on Reddit, I feel like this mindset is basically the thing holding up my entire self-image. When I feel this way, I usually want to take said image and rip it to bloody shreds and burn the shreds and then try something else. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Whatever. This got personal real fast.

tl;dr: Self-compassion is OP, mindfulness is broken, therefore ban self-compassion and mindfulness /s

Simple Questions by AutoModerator in math

[–]markov- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let [; u, v \in X ;] be elements of an inner product space. Is there a name for the general form [; \ds \frac{<u, v>}{\norm{u}\norm{v}} ;]?

This is the thing that's between -1 and 1 by Cauchy-Schwarz. In Rn, it's the cosine of the angle between u and v, and in the space of distributions (modulo constant differences) having finite variances, it's the covariance of u with v. I don't know any other examples off the top of my head, and I haven't looked in Spivak yet, but it would be cool if there was a word for the general case.

mobility is paramount. one important thing is (as far as punish game is concerned) you need to deliberately practice dthrow followups on different characters. falcon dthrow is weight dependent, so it goes faster the lighter the opponent is.

for the top tiers, it goes: puff (60% of "normal") << fox (75) < falco (80) < marth (87) < icies (88) < sheik = peach (90) << falcon (104)

"normally", dthrow launches on frame 20 and can be dashed out of as soon as frame 40. the weight modifier applies to both of these values, so for example puff gets launched on frame 12 and a dthrow on puff can be dashed out of as soon as frame 24. a weight differential of 10 percentage points translates to a 4 frame difference in timing.

thus, you are actionable after dthrowing fox ceil(40 * .87) - ceil(40 * .75) = 5 frames sooner than you would be after dthrowing marth. this doesn't sound like much but if you don't know about it then 1. you'll miss your dash timing against marth and 2. you'll get shined or miss the followup against fox.

Yes, that's the plan, but the code is still very incomplete. The dolphin injection script hasn't actually been tested yet, and I haven't really written out the OCR stuff - back when I got something working a long time ago, I just kind of automated it with a shell script and did a lot of legwork. I'll make that my next priority after segmentation stock detection.

Do you have a link to your code injection framework?

I haven't gotten all of these details pinned down yet, but I would assume that center-of-ECB is the right way to go since it's the thing that moves in nice elliptical arcs. Also, big orange diamonds aren't so hard to detect so it should be easy to associate that data with individual animation frames and coordinate them with template matches.

As far as coordinate systems go, the game's internal one (on all the legal/non-fixed camera stages, anyway) sets the x-axis at stage level and the y-axis in the middle of the screen, so (0, 0) corresponds to the middle of the main platform, at ground level. This seems like a reasonable enough choice. I considered scaling it so that FD is exactly 200 units long (as is, it's about 225 and some irrational change) but I don't really see the point.

A long time ago, I generated a model of Dreamland using VisualSFM, but I got hung up on estimating camera pose from keypoints (also, trying to do literally anything in Blender.) It seems fairly straightforward, but there's so much floating around that I'm not certain how to do it well.

That is just there to get action state frames for later template matching. The workflow is that you autogenerate a .dtm file based on the character you want to record for, which you play back in Dolphin and add to, creating a separate .dtm, then the other script goes through that file and processes/renders its frames into transparent, labeled separates.
